open for business in September.

"We are continuing to put up warning signs in
parks and playground areas in English and Span-
ish." Shulman said.
Razor blades have been found in two Newport
Beach parks so far -Wednesday at Bol5a Park, at
the the comer of Bolsa and Broad streets, and
Mench 23 at Manna Park. located at 18th Street
and West Balboa Boulevard:

It was one of four art stations

kindergdf1en class at Adams Ele-
mentary School in Costa Mesa
that exercised students' motor
skills and incorporated writing
skills.
Before students headed to the
various projects, Montandon
explained a.nd demonstrated how
to do each project and explained
why they were doing it.
First, she demonstrated bow to
make d cow out of construction
paper. Besides the cutting and
pasung. children learned about
cows.
The next station helped chil-
dren make clever Little Mother's
Day cards, which meant writing.
Kindergarten h~s really
changed because, hrst of all, these
kids all knew how to spell the
words they needed -"my,·
"love." "for " and "you." They also
knew how to write them .
The third stption was a surprise
for mothers. and the fourth was
the paint.mg.
For the painting. Montandon
explained that no one painting
would look the same because
mothers all looked dHrerent. She
asked students to thmk of what
their moms lgQ.ked W<e, including
eye color an'd hair color.
#My mother has a lot of brown
and a little gray,· one student
offered.
Then it was off to create mas-
terpieces.
Of the four kindergarten stu-
dents assigned to the pamting
center. Grace was, by far, the most
meticulous. She worked long after
the others had finished to make
her painting perfect.

T he Newport Beach life-
guards, past and pre-
sent, a.re having a gat-
together. It's too bad that ·
Fred Barnette can't be there.
U he were, he would
undoubtedly tell about the
two pains in the neck of his
lifeguarding career in the
early 1920s.
... I never saw Fred in the
water. No one else ever saw
Fred in the water, either.
There were some who said
Fred couldn't even swim, At
the very least, his swimming
ability was a mystery.
Whatever his swimming
capabilities, Fred was smart.
When the big surf arrived,

THE VERDICT
Fred took no chances. He
simply closed the beach. This
he accomplished by sticking
a row of poles in the sand
along the water line. To each
pole wu attach¢ a red Oag,
which meant •.don't go in the
water.• By this device, Fred
could avoid any drownings.
More important, I suspect, be
could also keep dry, which
was nice on a cold day. Even
nicer if he cpuldn't swim.
Fred had two problems
with his beach closure pro-
gram. They were named
Tagg Atwood and·Bob Gard-
ner. Natural-born outlaws,
those two, ages 9 or 10,
insisted on going in the
water, red flags or no red
nags.
This presented a problem
to Fred. Other beachgoers
would say, ·u those two can
go in, why can't we?• So
Fred would yell at the boys
to epme in, which, of
course, they ignored. Well,
goocf otd Fred h4d a solu-. ,
tion to the problem-and it
didn't involve coming in
after us. He would send for
either Tagg's mother or
Bob's older sister, with
whom he lived, with a sim-
ple message: •Ei:ther get
your son (or brother) out of
the water, or' I will have
him' arrestett a.nd taken to
jail."
And so, either Tagg's
mother or Bob's sister '(IOuld
come down to the beach,
walk out on the pier and
screech for her son or broth-
er to get out of the water.
Both boys, recognizing
where their next meal was
coming from, would meekly
surrender to the voice of
authoritY and leave the
water to receive the
inevitable scolding, which
Fred observed with a big
smile on his face.

smart lifeguard.'

comes together to help
motivate students.

rommunity players have joined
forces lo fonn an unbeatable
team. Their gdme? Helping
struggling teens.
With five months left in the
school year, Costa Mesa High
School has seventh-and
eighth-grade students who
are in. danger of not moving on
to the next gn:sde with their
classmates.
So the Newport-Mesa Uni-
hed School Distnct and school
administrators are passing
them next door to the Presby-
tenan Church of the
Covenant, which is W1de open
and looking for a way to help
the commuruty.
Volunteers in the church
get .the students.alter school.
They help them with their
homework. They teach them
to improve their study habits.
They act as mentors.
But they are not alone. The
Centrql Coast YMCA in New-
port Beach backs them up
with funding from the United
Way and staffing.
Also in for an assist is the
Orange County Community
Congregation Organizati.on,
which is always looking for
ways to help students score
good grades.
Although they began to
form this team more than a
year ago. their season began
in February, when the tutoring
got underway.
Since then, they have been
scoring points with more than
30 regular participants in the
Youth Achievers after-school
enrichment program.
One of their star pupils ~
Tony Saulinier, 15, a special-
day student in the eighth
grade who said the program
has helped him focus and
reach his goal each day of suc·
cessfulJy completing his
assignments. ·

city's Planning Commlssion and
Police Department ppproved the
application, City Council members
overturned the decision and denied
the request..

rusty signs ihside make it appear
like the real tlUng. But the historic
significance of ~y's Qumery lies
more in personal memories of
romantic marriage proposals, festive
anniversaries or simply enjoyable

the city's disappearing past as a fish-

the business duo for at least 20

me so much of our schools that I won-

more seasoned teacher told her the 9-
year-old students were alJ ill-behaved
anim(lls.
The students played a trick on the
young teacher•the first day, but the
sage prtndpaJ tells her not to get dis-
couraged. The teacher's brother tells
her that teaching is the wrong career
move because of poor pay and low
prestige.
. A group of 9-year-old bullies pick on
the kid who stutters and makes her life
miserable. One of the bullies lS kin to a

rectify the situation, until the young
tearJ>er tries to make a change.

young teacher fired when her son gets
a bad grade. That's why I was so
astounded to learn the film was made

Pacific Coast League girls
track and field preliminaries
at Irvine High.
The Geiders, both juniors,
typically take sibling rivalry
to new heights as they regu·
larly square off in the 100
meters and 200 repr,senting
Estancia High.
But, placed in separate
heats in the 100 and 200
Monday, they enjoyed the
experience of winning tfleir
respective heats, while also
rooting for one another.
"It was cool!," said Hanni
Geider, after they complet-
ed the first half of their
sprint duo. the 100. ·we
both can feel good about
winning."
Both did just that in both
sprint events, though Hanni,
the defending league cham-
pion in the 100, had the top
qualifying time in each
event, heading into Thurs-
day's finals.
Hanni, second in the 200
at last year's league finals,
went 13.33 in the 100 and
27 .20 in the 200. Jasmine,
second and third in the 100
and 200, respectively, at last
ye ar's PCL Finals, qualified
second in the 100. (13.37)
and the 200 (27.42).
"I think we're undefe~ted
(in league) as a team," said

League 3,200 champion who

ley last spring, looks forward
to adding both the 1,600 and'
3,200 to her 800 cballenge
Thursday at her first PCL
Finals.
But, with no qualifying
beats to run at the longer
distances Monday, she blew
off some excess energy with
a long warm-down (about
six laps around the infield).
Then, the former club soccer
player revived that former
passion, deftly dribbling a
soccer ball with a friend in
the infield for several min-
utes.
•Today was a fun day,"
sa.id Allen. who considers
the 3,200 her best event, fol·
lowed in order of preference
by the 1,600 and 800.

. Mahler qualified first in the

times of 16.82 and 47.54,
respectively. She burled the
