Cowden, a Hbntington Beach
resident, was a 26-year-old first-
grade teacher in Spearfish, S.D.,
when she received a telegram
from ,famed aviator Jacqueline
Cochi'an asking her to try out for
the newly formed WASP program.
"I think Jackie Cochran ·
checked all of the people who had
their private pilot's licenses,"
Cowden said.
But Cowden, who will speak
today at the 98th annual Califor-
nia Federation of Women's Clubs
convenµon in Costa Mesa, is an

County planners issue
El Toro airport report
•Officials say the
latest environmental
review should answer
all questions.

case scenarios for air pollution,
traffic congestion and other
adverse effects of an airport at
the closed El Toro Marine
base, Orange County airport
planners hope they have
answered all of the questions.
In a bulky, two-volume
supplement released Tuesday
-to be added to ~ library..-
shelf full of earlier volumes -
county officials said they have
filled in the gaps. In March
2000,aSuperiorCourtjudge
deemed the earlier review to
be inadequate.
The newest report, which
put a cap on Environmental
Impact Report No. 573, adds a
revamped air-quality analysis
for a proposed airport at El
Toro, which would serve 18.8
million annual passengers by
2010.
The new report also mea-
sures the effects John Wayne
Airport would have ii) serving
3.9 million passengers at that
same time. The airport now
serves 7 .9 million passengers.

to spill about her latest
~interest.
•Hypnotherapy,• she admits.
Reddy's been studying up on the
science in preparation for her pend-
ing full-time move to Norfolk Island
in the South Pacific, where she lives
about half of the time now. She's sold
her Santa Monica home to start a
quieter life away from the spotlight,
and she knows what her next role
will be.
•What does the island need? There

But before she leaves, she's got
some ends to tie up and some fans to
please. Her more than 30-year,
Granuny-winning career isn't going
to stop just because she's 58. And the
performer herself isn't one to tire.
She will sing many of her classic
hits with the Pacific Symphony
Orchestra today and Saturday for the
Pops Concerts Series at the Orange
County Performing Arts Center.
"Her voice is in perfect shape," ·
said John Forsyte, the orchestra's
president. ·And she's on.and she
involves the audience and has a good
sense of humor.•
Forsyte got a sense of this last year
when Reddy sang at a Pacific Sym-
phony Orchestra gala. She quite
nearly "brought the house down,· he
remembers, so orchestra leaders
sought after a public performance.

the last song deserves even more of a
spotlight. It's about Jove between a
parent and a child. The piece begins
with Reddy's now-grown daughter
saying, "Tell me again, mommy." It
ends with, ·1 love you, mommy."
"I thought it was destined to be a
classic," said Reddy, who is now a
grandmother. ·It had been written as
a man-woman love song, but it didn't
really translate as a man-woman love
song. I felt it would work as a parenl-
child love song, and there certainly
didn't seem to be too many of those
around."

contest promoting energy

When you sing or dance, it's fun.
It '!lak~~ you happy. When you
pamt, Its kind of funny when you
get watercolors on your nose.
When you write -well, that's
merely a way to blow off steam
when people just don't understand.
While art may be nothing more th~ a three-letter word at that
pomt, every child gets attached to
what he or she creates. We take
. pride in our creations, however
ihsignifkant or unappealing they
may seem to others.

longer there for her to admire. The
acrylic work trapped a little girl's
surreal experience on canvas. It
pictured humans battling sea
creatures underwater ill a subma-
rine.
For Claire, the work was her
first taste of success as an artist. It
was part of a show the gallery
exhibited last month and she got
rave reviews for it. An<J now it's gone -probably
forever.
I felt Claire's pain and that of
others I met at tJ?.e gallery. J had a
similar experience when l was not
much older than Claire.
is branded into my memory. For a
fourth-grade art class, I made a
crayon reproduction of an unlikely
airport with airplanes standing on
their tails seemingly ready to
launch into space like rockets.
Not only did the teacher give
me an abysmal grade for the pr6-
ject, but she held up the work and
laughed, as did the class of 50 slu·
dents.
I had n()Jle of these children's
abilities. I had no sense of <Urnen-
sion'for crying out loud.
But even I hurt when my only
piece of artwork -a large, color-
ful, beaded place m<lt -was ·
stolen during a class pro1ect.
In hindsight, I think I did 1t Jo
prove to myself that I could db
something artistic if l put my mind
to it. It was important to me on so
many levels.
I feel that loss even today. It all
came back when I met the children
at the gallery. .
I know that the loss will hover
ove r their heads like an annoying
HtUe insect when they start on their
next painting. ·
The place mat was my first and
Jast piece of artwork. Was it
because I was so deeply hurt by ~
the loss? Or was it because I
couldn't work with my hands? I
don 't know. That's why it hurts when those
o}>jects are snatched away from us.
It happened to seven children in
Newport Beach last weekend when
their pamtings were ripped off the
walls of an art gallery where they
were students.

That said, I must confess that I
did not possess a fraction of
Claire's artistic imagination or cre-
ativity. U there is an •Art for Dum-
mies,• I would have been a model
dummy.
It was the only thing I ever did
that could ever be labeled as art.
It was the only piece of handwork
where my bands actually worked.
It took me two years to complete
the mat, which my mother proudly
cl.M!p~ayed on our coffee table.
But I hope these children find it
m themselves to get past this inci-
dent and not let a petty thief get in
the way of their artistlc endeavors.

Jim Madden and his seven-
member crew set sail in the
Newport To Ensenda Interna-
tional Yacht Race last week
20 minutes behind the
biggest and fastest boats.
Somehow, he still managed to
beat several of them to the
Mexican harbor.
Stark RaVlng Mad -a 53-
foot, J-160 sailboat -took
the overall win in. the 54th
annual race.
Things didn't look that
way at 6:20 a.m. Saturday
when it was the 11th vessel to
glide across the finish line. It
came out on top after all of
the handicaps were consid·
ered and corrected times
were posted. .
"We hoped we'd win, bll).
we beat three 70-foot boats
across the finish line," said
Madden, standing proudly on
the immaculate deck of bis
boat, docked .outside the
Newport Harbor Yacht Club,
where be is a member. "So
they started 20 minutes
before us, and at 5 a .m., as
the sun started to rise, we
were about a mile out and we
could see several of the Qig·
ger guys behind us."

the UC Irvine Arbore.lum and the
Catalina Conservancy. That's in
line with the club's mission to pro-
m ote projects and programs of
horticultural stewardship, which
add to the beauty and health of the
community.

ing the Army way, the military way,

A bill was passed and 35 years
after disbanding, WASPs wer~ rec-
ognized for thetr war effort.
Cowden was at a 1977 confer-
ence in Cleveland, Ohio, watching
an air show when the importance of
what had happened hit her. 1\vo
small planes flew smoke rings
around the airport, and then the
Golden KnigbtS, the Army's para-
chute team, jumped through the
rings.
After training, Cowden was sta-
tioned at Love Field in Dallas as part
of Air Transport Command.
•My mission was to pick up
planes at the factory and take them
to training fields and points of
demarcation on the East or West
Coast," Cowden said.

Great Plains, N.Y., to Montana.

women, so ~owden headed back to
California, where she started a
ceramics business.

A study by the Motion
Pictures Assn. of America
shows that film studios spent
almost S8 million with Costa
Mesa businesses and paid
about $4.5 million to employ-
ees who live in the city.
For Newport Beach, the
corresponding figures are
$20.2 million and $4.8 mil-
lion. ·

major effect on residents.
As industry employees
living in the city lose out on
income, it could affect sales
and property tax revenues,

works as the city's revenue
manager and serves on the
board of directors of the
Media Alliance of Orange
County.
Newport Beach charges a
$200 daily fee for permits to
film on public property. Cos--
ta Mesa bills $40 an hour
and no more than $200 a
day.
But even if the cities
would lose out on a few
thousand dollars as the
result of a strike, that's noth-
ing compared with the loss
ot film-related business and
a loss in income for residents
who work in the industry.
