The tour is sponrored by the nonprofit Collings Foundation of Massachusetts. The B-24 served in the Pacific Theater with the 43rd Bomb Group, 64th Squadron. The nose art, "The Dragon and his Tail,• is considered one of the best examples of art painted on an American aircraft by crew members who viewed them as good luck talismans. The a -24 is also the only one left in the world today. The B-17 "Nine-0-Nine, • which flew in the 8th Airforce Ewopea.n Theater and completed 140 missions with the 91st Bomb Group, never lost a aew member. , A few hundred people were on hand Sunday afternoon to tour the planes and to take flights. Among them was Bud Kingsbury of La Mirada, a World War ll veteran who attends aircraft events to help edu- cate the public. Kingsbury was a 8- 17 pilot who once swam for 32 straight hours when his plane crashed into the Mediterranean Sea just off the coast of Italy in 1943. "First, one engine went out ... then the second and then the whole left wing was on fire,• said Kingsbury, watching the hundreds or people line up to see the planes. ·we crashed and I swam all night ... 21 miles. The others didn't make it. I was saved by . three Itaµan ladies ... but ended up in an imprisonment camp for 21 months. I still think of my. crew every day and it used to be hard to talk about. But now I oome here and talk to people. It's important to share this.• Rig and Claire Braga of Orange also make it a point to a ttend as many of the bomber plane landings as possible beca~se Rig Braga was a B-17 co.pilot in the war. Lately. there has been a lot of media attention. especially in Hunt- ington Beach, on the water quality of the ocean and har- bor due to urban runoff pol- lution and the new cleanup measures being introduced to help. Well, a few years ago, I volunteered as the narrator and on-camera host for an educational video titled •What Starts al the Drain, Feeds the Harbor When It Rains.• It was sent to every elementary school in Orange County for their outdoor sci- ence programs. The video was produced for the New- port Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce Marine Com- mittee and paid for by the generous donations of res,i~ dents, businesses and the city of Newport Beach. I worked with Costa ,, Mesa-based Your Video Pro- ductions, which produced the video for less than half the cost, and we knew the video was on the leading edge to water-qtiality ed·uca- tion. We were delighted to learn that the video received two industry awards for. excellence. Educating the youth was our goal, as we knew it is often too late for most adults. This was too apparent looking at this year's attendance at Clean Harbor Day. I stopped by to help out at this year's 21st annual Clean Harbor Day, held at the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum on April 28. The weather was a little drizzly, but what surprised me was the lack of support from the community, as far as boat participation and local volun- teers. Still, it was nice to see students from Irvine, which is an upstream city. As always, Wes Annand from Newport Beach was there coordinating the boats, and one of the boats was Naut-a-Care's, operated by Al Baltazar and nm West. You may have seen photos in the newspapers of the shop- ping cart encased in barna- cles, which the Naut-a-Care team recovered from the depths of a bay beach. I hope that next year the com- munity rallies around this event that not only cleans up the harbor but also educates everyone on ways to help stop urban runol1j<>llution. • • • To get in the mood for boating, an one bad to do was walk through the New- port Boat Show that just fin. ished at \he Dunes. I attend Mike Whitehead THE HARBOR COLUMN many boat shows on the West Coast. and I think this is one of the best by far, with the huge onshore vendor dis- play and the amount of actu- al boats in the water. When I first entered the big tent, I saw Eric Hovland -a local licensed captain who works for Pompanette -who let me try out one of the new captain seats. I want one for my living room. I walked a little farther, where I spoke with Bob Jimenez, who represents M09'Jairs and Pettit Paint. Bob is an expert in boat fin- ish care and has been on my Boathouse TV show. I had to get on the docks to feel at bome and there l ran into Ed Arnold and Jack Means, who showed me the new Carver Yachts. I can attest that Carver is well swt- ed for entertaining and ocean travel, as I have taken Carvers around Point Con- ception in very rough condi- tions. As I was leaving the show, I spoke with Dole Cole, past commodore of the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, and it is always a pleasure speak- ing with an excellent sailor. In closing, most of you know that the Sea Base's renovation plans were con- tinued by the Newport Beach Planning Commission. Looks like the commissioners lacked vital site-plan infor- mation in their pa~ets and two of them were absent. What an excellent enhance- ment to the Sea Base it would be, and there has been great support from the community to bring the facil- ity up to the standards for maintaining such high-quali- ty programs. Also, I would like to thank the Orange County Council of the Boy Scouts for present- ing me with the "Baden Powell Award" for my volun- teer service for the Sea Base. But all my life it's been a time of cele· bra~on -birthdays for me, my sister, my grandma and my late aunt. It's my parents' wedding anniversary and, of course, Mother's Day. May ts also time for the Kentucky Derby, the Indi· anapolis 500 and there's even a three-day weekend for Memorial Day. And of course, summer is just around the comer. But ever since May of 1999, convicted killer Steven Allan Abrams has ensured that my favorite month now conjures up a somber, even · honible memory -the painful images of a play· ground tragedy. that resulted in the deatB of two innocent children, Sierra Soto and . Brandon Wiener, and the Tony Dodero FROM1ffE NEWSROOM· injuries of several others. I bring this up not so much as to baJp on the anniversary of that awful moment in local history, but as a warning that recent news events reminds me that innocence is still under attack. Take for instance the recen\ news that someone has been placing razor blades and shards of broken glass onto park playgrounds and play equipment. Then there was the news that someone shot a blue heron, an endangered water· fowl that makes its home in the Back Bay, leaving its recently hatched babies motherless. Here in the newsroom, we ask the same questions as you. •Who would do such a thing?• The aJ).IWer is it's some- one like Abrams. Someon e who wants to destroy lnno- cence. As a human, I find that incredibly sad; as a father I find it terrifying. Children and animals are defenseless, often unable to protect themselves or cry for help when it's needed. The perpetrator of such evil knows this and doesn't care. I only hope that all the parents in Newport·Mesa stay on their guard and warn others that their children and . other innocents are under attack. Hopefully the att4cker will be behind bars soon. • • • Newspaper types a.re pretty notorious for not being early birds. So getting up at the crack of ~wn to spend Thursday morning at the. annual Prayer Breakfast for the Newport· Mesa·Irvine Interfaith Council was not an easy thing to do. But I was glad I did it. The Prayer Breakfast, set to coincide with the National Day of Prayer, featured our own Peter Buffa as the emcee. Peter was his usually funny self with a litany of ecclesiastical jokes that set the place off laughing. The best part of the morn- ing, however, is the message that the Interfaith Council bringl members of all differ· ent religions and faiths together for a common cause and to learn from each other. Anyone interested in join- ing the Interfaith Council can check with their pastor or rabbi or attend one of the eight lunch meetings held each year. Costa Mesa to consider funding for El Toro • Allocation would be based on a formula worked up by Councilman Chris Steel. Paul Olnton DAILY PILOT COSTA MESA-Newport Beach isn't the only city fund· ing efforts to build an airport at the shuttered El Toro Marine base. Not long after Garden Grove and Seal Beach both anted up, Cost.a. Mesa will consid er adding to the grow· ing funding pot. The City Council tonight will consider granting two lobbying groups more than $36,000. The Orange County Regional Airport Authoi:ity has requested $21,231 and the Airport Working Group, based in Newport Beach, bas asked for $15,000. The authority, a loose coalition of North County cities fighting for an airport at El Toro, woul(i use the funds to pay for basic operating expenses. That rather unusual num· ber is based on a formula worked '!lP by Councilman Chris Steel, the city's repre· sentative on the coalition. Under Steel's formula, each of the more than a dozen authority cities will be asked to give 20 cents per city resi- dent to the pro.airport cause. "That would be your rec· ommended contribution,• Steel said. "They're not oblig- ated to make any contribu- tion. But we're hopeful they'll see it to make some contribu- tion.• Costa Mesa's population is about 106,000. The working group would use its grant to "educate the grass roots and opinion lead· ers on the expansion impacts• of John Wayne Air· port, according to a letter from group spokesman Dave Ellis · to Councilman Gary Monahan. The group hosted several public information workshops prior to the March 2000 pas· sage of Measure F, which requires a two-thirds voter approval for any new airport, jail or landfill. Ellis said the group would host additional public meet- ings. . "The public forums they've put on and the infor· mation they've put out has been invaluable to the people of Costa Mesa,· Monahan said. ·1 think they can be effective.• On March 27, Newport Beach gave $120,000 to the Airport Working Group, along with $1 50,000 to Citi- zens for Jobs and the Econo- my -another pro·El Toro group '-and $150,000 to the airport authority. On April 23, the Seal Beach City Council handed $5,482 to the airport authority. Garden Grove has been pro- viding office space to the authority; city officials in that city have proposed a $35,000· grant to the group as part of the 2001·2002 budget. Don Cantrell DAILY PILOT Rod Gould, one of the • toughest gridd~rs ever to emerge from Orange Coast College in the "First, Rod was blessed with drive and determination plus a great personality that included everyone in his enthusiasm,• Rosso continued. •So, this late 1940s, has been crowned as • a Pilot Sports Hall of Famer. showed up and it was this leadership that gave us our first two wins. Hence, eve.n with some subsequent losses, we knew we could win, and even with the losses, Rod always led by example -getting ready for the next game.• The late Newport Harbor High football player under the late Les Miller was highly valued at both Newport and Coast. After his passing in a tragic lumber truck-auto collision a sterling trophy was named after him by Coast head coach Ray Rosso. The trophy honored the athlete who played the most minutes in a season. Sadly, his passing came two years after his close football teammate, Gene Lee, a rugged Newport lineman, died when a car struck his durtng a dark night on the , "Corona del Mar highway near the Bade· bay turnoff. · The Daily Pilot's planned tribute to Gould provided Coach Rosso, 85, •with an unhappy memory of Gould's influence resulted in quality relationships with those who came in contact with him. "Throughout the season., Rod not only had great rapport with his teammates and coaches, but with the student body of 550 as well,• Rosso said. •Rod was the type of young man who " transfened his leadership qualities to -others as well. Rod was the kind of athlete that should be idealized. , He loved to compete, he liked people and made them part of his pursuits.• Rod Gould's ill-fated Rod Gould recruiting trip 52 years The OCC mentor had a long tis.uc with Gould before be left on the ill-fated trip. Gould informed Rosso that he ago.· Gould and two Downey teammates had plans to visit St. Mary's University in Northern California. All three died in the crash. "ln the fall of 1948, as we prepared for OCC's first football season, we faced a few problems/ Rosso said. •(There was) no field, hand-me-down unifonns, very limited recruiting and coaches and many players meeting for the first time. Add to that a head coach who had a winning record and a college president who expected or hoped for a winning season.• Prior to OCC, Rosso had coached two fabulous seasons at Chaffey College and led the school to a triumphant Junior Rose Bowl contest over an Oklahoma eleven. •The •ingredients' were OK.• Rosso said of the early OCC days. •But, reality set in on opening practices where I realized we were not going to have high expectations and that we would desperately need leadership from team leaders. So, someone bad to step up and be a leader. And this is where the Rod Gould story begins. was interested in a coaching career. •1 related to (Gould's interest),• Rosso said. •1 told him that a lot of us bad satisfactory results and I encouraged him to pursue his education and credentials. Believe me, he would have been an outstanding coach." Sadness arrives when Rosso remembers the night Gould died. "Now the hard part,• Rosso said •1 received a phone call one night telling me about Rod's accident. It took some further agonizing hours to learn he had lost his life. I felt I bad lost one of my sons. Our ptbletic department was in complete disbelief, the faculty and student body completed a pattern of deep SOll'OW that would be felt for monttis.• •we had the (memorial) service for Rod in the old Santa . Ana Army Air Base chapel,• Rosso added. •That aJ.16 was the finAl realization that Rod was really gone. On assignment with two colleagues who build and construct tennis stadiums, Bain has lived the past month in an apartment south of the Park Place in Irvine, about three minutes down the street from ,Newport Beach Tennis Club. Bain & Co. are here to build and construct a facility for the Champions Tour stop, which will seat over 2,000 · people in a cozy, garden environment.
