.Women survive blaze

NEWPORT BEACH -
Flames ravaged a two-story
townhouse early Tuesday,
trapping two women in an
upstairs bedroom until fire-
fighters arrived and whisked
them to safety.

Sarah Weeks, 20, suffered
a second-degree bum on her
foot and Kristine Arnold, 20,
received cuts on one of her
toes. Both women were treat-
ed at Hoag H ospital and then
. released, said Lt. John Blauer
of the Newport Beach Fire
and Marine Department.
Authorities are still investi-
gating ihe cause of the fire,
which began around 2:10
a.m. on the first floor of the
home in the 2500 block of
16th Street.
The fire enveloped the
upstairs bedroom. Down-
stairs, the flames stretched
the length of the floor to the
ceiling.
"ll was a major inferno
there," Blauer said.
It took 21 f11efigbters to
extingwsh the names.
Authonties estimated that the ~
fire caused $130,000 in dam-
ages.
Hours later, the smell of
smoke lingered outside the

filed earlier this month against the pop-
ular restaurant.

paid off.

was never sent into combat there. He
was. sent to Germany as a tank com-
pany commander. More th~n a
decade after bis return, lie decided
to volunteer with the American
Legion.
In anticipation of beginning his
tenure a s commander, Lah~y is
putting together a package of all the
different areas for which people can
volunteer. Both veterans and non-vet-
erans a re welcome, he said.

Eleven residents are seeking
the position of chairman of the
library's board of trustees -
one of the city's most coveted
high-profile volunteer titles.
The four-year post, current-
ly filled by Coast Magazine
publisher Jim Wood, will be up
at the e nd of June. The City
Council hopes to have the new
trustee in place by July 1.
Council members Tom
Thomson. Todd Ridgeway and
Gary Adams will narrow down
the applicants and give their
nominations at the June 13
council meeting.
As a five-member group, the
trustees work symbiotically
with the Library Foundation,
which raises money for the
institution. The trustees decide
how the money will be disbib-
uted, In terms of programs,
books and classes.
Despite the controversy he
has encountered in the past
year, Wood has thrown his hat
in the ring. A sell-described
"ideas man• Wood has helped
push forward some of the
library's biggest programs. This
year, in particular, he was able
to get TV news anchor and
author Tom Brokaw to speak at
the Distinguished Speak er
Lecture Series.
However, some foundation
members have been upset by
Wood's leadership style, and be
was ~t the center of a bitter dis-
pute between the foundation
and trustees earlier this year.

Robert Langsan, who
recently purchased the boat,
declined to comment.
It was too late to contain
the spill, said officials fTom the
state Department of Fish and
Game. The fuel is expected to
bum off in the sunlight today,
they said.
Orange County Sheriff's
Harbor Patrol and U.S. Coast
Guard pe!"5<>nnel. along with
the Fish and Game officials,
spent several hours in 1the
area, speaking to Langsan and
taking water samples.
The samples will help to
determine bow much fuel
leaked from the boat. Langsan
could be responsible for a~varl
ety of costs, including the tests.
Authorities are still trying to
figure out what caused the
leak. They said it could be that
the yacht's fuel tank had sim-
ply bee,.n overfilled.
Fish and Game warden
Michael McDermott said fuel
spills are ·rare in Newport
Harbor and just one gallon
can do a lot of damage.

harbor, but it does happen,•
McDermott said. "It's usually
only a few ounces. And a liWe

After sitting on the beach
for several hours, the dizzy
birds appeared a little more
·"'lively and drank Cresh water. A
few eventually waddled back
into the water.
·About a month ago, a diesel
spill in the Back Bay injured
another bird, local favorite Sir
Swany. The Japanese black-
necked swan was recently
released after being treated
for throat and lung problems it
suffered after ingesting the
fuel. ,
Officials are waiting to see
if the birds in Newport Hq.rbor
will require similar treatment.
"They said 'they're going
to wait on the birds,· Wassall-
Kelly said. "We're cleaning
them with fresh water.•

The Lions Club has also
added a classic car show and
a new food court, in which
local charities will run various
booths and retain the pro-
ceeds. For instance, the
YMCA will run a Pepsj booth
and the Estancia High School
PTA will be grilling hot dogs
and hamburgers.
The fun starts at 5 :30 p.m.
Friday and lasts until the last
straggler leaves at 11 p.m.

the Pirates this season.
Reuss' 27 career home runs is the
second highest two-year total in
school history, behind Joey James'
35 dingers. He is also fourth behind
James, Dave Staton and Kevin
Reimer with 93 career RBis.
His most memorable moment at
Orange Coast came on April 10,
1999 against Cypress when Reuss
clubbed two grand slams in one
game, becoming the first Pirate to
ever accomplish such a feat.
"It's really a hitters park,• Reuss
said of his new UNLV field. •1 want-
ed to play out of state, but yet it's
still close to home, which is nice.
During night games in right field,
I'll be able to look out and see the

Davis will face Michael Jessup in
the singles semifinals, while former
Newport Harbor High standout Brett

COSTA MESA-Things are going so well for the Costa
Mesa High football team this spring, Coach Jerry Howell's
Mustangs haven't waited to celebrate.
The reigning Pacific Coast League co-champions, in fact,
have and will celeb1ate each Friday with a post-practice
barbecue.
"We bad a great first week, probably as good, or better
than we've ever had in spring,• said Howell, preparing for
his sixth season at the helm. "We're executing plays and
doing things super. When we finish practice, everyone is
smiling and laughing.·
And, each Friday, eating, too.
"The parents are putting on a
barbecue for us every Friday,• said
Howell, whose squad opened
spring drills May 15.
Among the reasons for such
good humor is a corps of veteran
leadership, which has set a .serious
tone and taken great sb'ides to
integrate the younger players into
the system.

these kids have self-discipline,• Howell Mid. "We nonnally
band out a T-shirt for leadership at the end of each week,
but we couldn't narrow it down to one or two kids after the
first week. Everyone is talking to each other and helping
one another learn.• ·
The Mustangs a.re learning more complexity on offense,
as Howell and offensive coordinator Tom Baldwin, who
guided the defense the last several years, are trying to
•make people play multiple defemes against us.• .
Howell said bis brain trust will enact that plan by using
multiple formations.
"We want to be a lltUe more wide open on offense this
year. We'll spend more time this spring on offense than
defense.•
The major change defensively is the man in charge, as
Matt Kellogg takes over for Baldwin as the architect of the
aggressive fOW'-four lcheme.
Howell also is happy with the addition of assistant Kent
Paul, who bas taught at Mesa for yean, but bad coached
elsewhere, wttil Howell lured him on board. i>ersonneI questions abound, but Patrick HuWger, who
will be a senior, llppeen entrenched at quarterback.
