It was hard to believe some of these children were in the first grade because they were reading FRDAY so dearly and read such advanced writing as Sil- verstein. Maddy could even read upside down, as she must have seen her teacher doing. She showed her mother the pictures in "Cordwoy's Christmas• as she read. Other moms held their children on laps or lay side by side on their tummies. One group lay wrapped in beach blankets lo ward off the chill. When they had to go back, other moms took over. When Austin Bergquist's mom headed back to work. be, kept reading with his buddy, Tobin Frome, and his mom. They look a lot like other shoes in my closet, made out of leather. But, they have sped.al mean- ing. They came to me as a Mother's Day gift when my kids were little tykes. The deal was that sons or daughters had to say, in word or song, what was so good about their mom. First prize was a free pair of shoes for your mom. So, here were my daugh- ters, then about 6 and 3, with their pseudo-rap music yideo, entertaining all in the shoe department, with Goy Geiser- Sondovol EDUCATIONAUY SPEAKING sell-produced sounds, words and moves about their mother. My special Mother's Day gift is a chance to see my older daughter, who is at Stanford, perform in her. spring show with her a cappella group, Mixed Com- pany. They use their voices to produce all of the musical instrument sounds, just like she did to win the free shoes. You just never know what special skills you will need in college. Only shorten Christmas boat parade days, not travel route We have for many years e njoyed many , functions around the beautiful Newport Harbor Christmas Boat Parade. I under- stand that there's a possibility that it will • not take place down the Udo Channel. What I want to· offer is just some options to be considered versus omitting the bOat parade down the channel. The number of days that the boat parade is offered could be shortened. That would certainly ease the amount of pressure and responsibility on boat owners, and yet still provide a tradition that has taken place for many, many years that many residents on Udo, as well as family and friends, have enjoyed. I will be sending a letter to the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Com- merce on behalf ol the Women's Club to just voice my concern about what exactly they're reviewing at this time.
