NEWPORT BEACH -A San
Bernardino man who was pUlled out
to sea by a powerful riptide was still
missing after the three-hour se~rch
for him ended. Sunday night.
1\vo boats and nine snorkelers
scanned the ocean at 56th Street
where the 39-year-old man was last
seen swimming with three others
around 5:17 p.m.
•. Authorities saw the man just as a
-wave crashed on his head. He has-
n't been seen since, said Randy
Scheerer, battalion chief for the
Newport Beach Fire and Matjne
Department. Authorities did hot
release the man's name. .
Authorities learned of the miss-

ing man aftet they rescued three
others who swam with him. They
were all caught in the riptide.
Lifeguards brought two people to
shore. 1}1at's when the survivors,
betwee n breaths, told authorities
about the missing man. Another
swimmer saved the third person.
The surVivors were Wesley Dodd,
14, Martha DOdd, 17, and Mary
Windship, 27, all from San Bernardi-
no.
Wesley Dodd and Windship were
transported to Hoag Hospital, treat-
ed and released. Martha Dodd dJd
not require any treatment.

But a red flag waved all day to
alert swunrners of extremely dan-
gerous condlt10ns. Llleguards made
57 rescues Saturday and an estunat-
ed 50 more on Sunday. All rescues
were related to the high tide and

F amities poured into the car-
nival grounds Sunday to
soak up the end of the 55th
annual Llons Cub Fish Fry.
The three-day fund-raiser trans-
formed OCC's campus into a chil-
dren's wonderland packed with car-
nival rides, games, booths, contests
and food.
Coordinators bad not counted the
money raised but said the turnout
exceeded last year's, also held at occ.
Proceeds go toward youth groups,
such as the Boys & Girls Club, said
Brett Smith, Lions Club vice presi-
dent.

However, it's the same reason that made
Olympia Beer famous: "It's the water.• This
old saying made ·01y• a household word in
the 1950s through the 1970s, and it is still
beard today. It is the
water!

dous growth. Newport Harbor was a safe
port for the del.Jvery of lwnber, building
materials, tools, equipment and other
much-needed goods. ll was a port for the
delivery of cargo and the exporting or cit-
rus. Ln later years, after roads and rails were
installed, the need to export and import
decreased, and the emphasis shifted to the
fishing and cannery industry.
About this same time, Newport Harbor
became known for its recreational properties
and was a destination location because of its
beaches, boating, picnicking and camping
sites. The popular resort eventually gravitat-
ed from swruner beach cottages into year-
round homes and developments. Even
today, a'i evidenced by. the long lines or cars
backed up, bumper to bumper, on the Costa
Mesa Freeway on any weekend afternoon,
we have something that the rest of the
world seems to want. It's not oil, strawber-
ries or oranges; it's just plain, old water.
Weekend or summer retreat recreational
activtbes eventually became a lifestyle and
turned Newport from a resort into a small
town. High schools. golf courses, homes,
shopping developments and the boat-build-
ing industr.y made Newport what it is today.
The quaint cottages have succumbed to the
waterfront estates. and we now boast the
world's Largest Mercedes-Benz dealership.
Times have changed. Maybe now we
should use the term "It's the money."
SPLJSH SPLASH: It's the water, Newport
Harbor High School pool water.
From 5 to 8 p.m. June 11, there will be a
fund-rruser for the family and support team of
Newport Harbor High School sophomore
swimming sensation Aaron Peirsol. PeirsOl, 16,
is rated No. 1 m the world in the 200-meter
backstroke and is favored to compete on the
U.S. Olympic team in Sydney, Australia.
Although Peirsol's expenses have been
met, a group of friends has organized an
event called •Back the Stroke,• hoping to
raise enough money to assist Peirsol's family
with the expense of national and interna-
tional travel. The event, which will be held
at the Newport Beach Yacht Club, includes
silent and live auctions, Olympic coaches
and Olympians, live music and dlning on
the deck. Michael Villani, from the movies
·up Close and Personal" and ·Man On The
Moon,• will be the master of ceremonies.

Day Parade.
The par~de, which was
originally organized as a one-
time celebration commemo-
rating the island's new fire
station, has become a tra4i-
tion for the city.
And many residents, such
as Gina Van Dyke, wouldn't
want it any other way.
Chief Bob McDonell
appeared in a revved-up yel-
low car with Dames painted
on the doors. His car followed
a Chain of city officials in the
parade.
Thousands lined the street
to wave at the entourage.
Seating was scarce. Some
prepared residents brought
lawn ch airs. Others plopped
, right on the curb. Some
leaned ·in front of stores ..
But some kids sat in one
place with the best view of all
-on dads' shoulders.
Van Dyke grew up on the
island and has seen the
parade evolve. She recalled
decorating her bike as a child
and riding around on the
Fourth of July. Now she's in
the parade with . her family
and relatives:

But Van Dyke was still
running the show. She stood
in front of a group of 10 chil-
dren from four generations,
all wearing grass skirts,
flower leis and sandals. They
called themselves the "Coral
Avenue cuties."
"Every year I've seen it
grow. It's great to see our little
island come together like
this,• Van Dyke said.
Music from bands ener-
gized the crowds. Whether it
was a children's marching
band or local groups such as
"The Surfans• and "The Fab-
ulous Nomads,· people
everywhere tapped their feet
and clapped along with the
rhythms.
The crowd applauded
when Newport Beach Police
a cocker spaniel named
Duffy, along for the outing. It
was Scott's first time at the ·
parade.
•Disneyland is wonderful,
but these types are better.
There's more of a hometown
feel here," Scott said.

Big Band jazz saxophonist
and vocalist who died in
Costa Mesa last week. Not
only had Snowden met
Beneke and heard him play
on several occasions, but his
father, Lew Snowden, led
Beneke's band in a 1940s
movie.

used to live in Corona del
Inside Mar was
utterly con-
fused last SCOOP week when
she received a glossy
endorsement for Measure A
in the mail. Jill tvfoney" co-
chair of Citizens to Rebuild
our Schools, assured us that
sending a flier outside of the
Newport-Mesa area was an
oversight and not the prac-
tice of the group. But the
Fullerton resident is still
wondering if she is invited to
join Newport-Mesa voters at
the polls Tuesday.

Peirsol broke the meet
record in the 200-meter back-
stroke with a time of 1 :59.40,
but it wasn't good enough to
win his race, as world record

overcame a slow start to top
the field in 1 :58.40.

Costa Mesa freshman Sharon
Day concluded a remarkable season
with a fifth-place finish in tbe girls
high jump. Day cleared 5-8 on her
second attempt. Five other girls
were also stuck at 5-8. Day got the
fifth-place tie with Niki Avery of
Lemoore, with both missing three
jumps.
"I thought I could do better since
I cleared 5-8 before,• Day said.
Nevertheless, Day, the Division
ID champion whose 5-9 at the Mas-
ters is tied for the fourth-best mark
in the nation, picked up a medal (the
top six were medalists) just six days
shy of her 14th birthday. Schquay
Brignac of Taf.t (Los Angeles) won
the state crown with a leap of 5-9.

The Newport-Harbor High
senior capped off bis illustrious
prep career with a miQ'oscopic
number, 36.60. That was his win-
ning time for the boys 300-n;eter
intennediate hwdles in Saturday's
CJF state track and field champi-
onships at Cerritos College. But it
looms even larger outside of the
state meet.
Jones, the CIF Southern Sec-
tion Division n champion in the
300 hurdles, as well a# the 110
high hurdles, broke a 15-year-old
Orange County record with his
wiii.ning time. The old mark was
held by Keith Pontiflet of Esperan-
za, who ran a 36.74 back in 1985.
Jones' clocking is also the fifth-
fastest time in the nation.
The surprising thing about
Jones' 36.60 is that it made for an
extremely tight race with Steven
Smith from Serra of Gardena, who
led corning out of the turn. Both of
them exchanged the lead twice
down the final straightaway
before Jones barely pulled ahead
for the victory.
uThat was awesome to have
him anead, of me on the straight-
away,~ Jones said. "It was so good
to be pushed this hard. I've never
been pushed like that before.•
After the race, Smith was so
crushed by the resuJt that be
refused to stand at the medal
podium. even tbough his 36.16
was only tbe third sub-3'J..Wne in
the ~tate. And it was fast enough
to give Jones. who had the previ-
ous state ~t of '36.89, a (eal
scare.

Jones saia . "But I was running
· third or fourth. That was a real
good eye-opener because that
forced me to break that record.•
: Jones, who will run for UCLA
ne'kt 'year, was just .04 seconds
away from another state title in
the 110 high hurdles. He and
Chris Morgan of Los Angeles-
based Taft ran neck-and-neck
after the fifth hurdle. Morgan
barely won witb a 13.95. Joi;ies ran
a 13.99, the ninth-fastest time in
the nation and the seventh-fastest
mark in county history.
•I'm v~ry happy with my ti.me,"
he said. "My real goal was to run
under 14 seconds and I did that. I
didn't care it I finished fifth o,sixth.
I just wanted to run under 14."
Jones usually runs to-improve
agai.nst his own standards instead .
of the competition. On that scale,
he improved on last year's sev-
enth-place finish in the intermedi-
ates and he definitely improved
since his Sea View League battles·
with Irvine's Al Williams, who won
the state intermediates in 1998.

third-place finish in the 1,600.
Steen's time of 4:51.44 was her
second-best lifetime mark and it
was roughly two seconds behind
state champ Jenny Aldridge of
Santa Rosa-based Maria Carrillo.
Aldndge came from way back to
win in 4:49.63.
"I wanted to go out and win,•
Steen said. "But I'm very happy
with third place. And I beat who I
wanted to beat (Mira Costa fresh-
man Lynn Dixon, who was fourth
with a 4:53.29). H
Steen's strong effort in the
1,600 and a sore ankle took its toll
on the 3,200, where she placed
\5th with a time of 10:59.18.
Both Steen and Jones will com-
pete in this weekend's Golden
West track and field champi·
onships at Sacramento.
