In the nautical world, these are the elements that are often thought necessary for a "beau- tiful"~. But Chuck South's boat looks a little different. It appears more like a corroded collision of Tom Sawyer's raft, an industrial crane and a Mack truck.Thestrangecontraption sports a chugging silver smokestack, a variety of greasy winches, miscellaneous bar- rels full of heavy chain and a couple acetylene and oxygen tanks for an underwater torch. The whole thing is ochre and brown with oxidation and grime. If there were boats in •Blade Runner,# they might have looked like this. It is beautiful? Some people probably don.'t think so, but South loves it to death. If you understand the function of all the machinery on the boat, he suggested, it's hard not to find it pretty. South runs the South Mooring Co .. one of a handful · of businesses in Newport Beach dedicated to maintain- ing the moorings that some boat owners use to tie up their vessels. The company does other kinds of work a.round the harbor, such as driving pilings into the muddy bottom and helping to anchor dredging equipment. For all these types of tasks, South's ugly beaut is perfectly adapted. The towers that rise up from its platform in an A-frame can be used for a variety of tasks, from dragging up the engine bodies and propellers that a.re often used as mooring anchors to hammering pilings with VOLKN0.1J9 ,, heavy weights. Hydraulic rods called •5l>uds• on the sides of the boat can be sunk to the bay bottom, llncboring the boat. •The idea is to give us a sta- ble, stationaJ1 work platform when the boat is lifting objects that weigh several tons,• South said. Not every job requires all of the tools on the boat, but South likes having his options open. For certain IOnds of work, the platform expands like something from a box of Legos, with extra equipment doubling its size. At other "The idea is to give · us a stable, stationary work platform when the boat is lifting objects that weigh several tons. * Chuck South times, the boat can go to work in a more stripped-down form. •It's sort of like a fishing boat," South explained. •You keep adapting it for different jobs. With a hydraulic drill on the front, you can do core.sam- pling ... Negotiating all the vari- ables, from a piloting stand- point, is difficult. Where the pleasure cruiser mainly bas to contend with a steering wheel and a throttle, South has to worry about delicate shifts in weight, the variable consis- tency of the harbor bottom and the cballenge of dealing with objects sunk in several feet of murky water. Terrance Phlps THE HARBOR COLUMN ' Nautical heritage is slipµng away I enjoy writing about our harbor, the boats that sit upon it and the people that sit upon them. From time to time, I strike a chord that not everyone might agree with, and those readers have been kind enough to drop me a short note. It's rare however, to receive a let- ter that is complimentary in Oliture, but I guess it's easier to write com- plaints than kudos. Some are valid, some are not. What was extremely rare, however, is when I received 63 responses to my April 3 column, •What is happening to Mariner's Mile?• For those of you who have since utilized this paper as fish wrap, let me remind you. The column addressed the issue of Newport Beach's disappearing mar- itime influence. specifically along the area known as Mariner's Mile. When a rough idle and misfiring occurs, it may be due to a "blown" head gasket. This refers to failure at the narrow area between cylinders, which results in a loss or cylinder compression and engine misfire. It is usually caused by engine overheating, which causes the head to wup. Localir.cd overheating or the cylinder head can be caused by obstructed coolant pusages in the head gasket, the engine blocl(, or the head itself. ZONING AND THE MARKET Despite what some council members and residents might like to see on Garden Lane, the reality is that the area falls in the zoning grid that designates it a multiple-family residential district rather than a single-tam- ily residential district. Garden Lane is actually dense with subdivided units, Across the street from the lot Cefalia wants to build on, there are three mailboxes for a single .numeric address. The next lot down the way has tw<>i and.the lot after that has five. Cefalia and Monahan both Said they fail to see how anoth-. er subdivided unit would alter the "character" of that particu: Jar neighborhood. Monahan said he agrees, in principle, that the city should play a role in determining the character of Costa Mesa neigh- borhoods. "That's our job. When former sprint freestyler Steve Wyatt was the Pacific-10 Conference champion for the University of Arizona, it was a breathless work of precision and art. For a two-lap burst, Wyatt would never take his head out of the water, even on the turn. "That's the hundredth of a second that could cost you at the end,~ said Wyatt, wbo developed the technique at Arizona under Coach Bob Davis, becoming one of the few in the Wildcat program to execute the lung-challenging • afterward the UCLA coach complained that Wyatt had "psyched out" his swimmer. Wyatt, a two-time NCAA All-American in the 50 free who, at one point in 1980, was ranked seventh in the world. An Estancia High and O range Coast College product, Wyatt set a school record in the 50 free (20.12) at Arizona that stood for 13 years. A former Newport Beach lifeguard, Wyatt was also an NCAA All-American in the 100 free in 1979 and OCC's Athlete of the Year in 1977, following an outstanding aquatics career, which included a state championship in the 50 free -the best community college time in the nation that year (21.13). The mark also stood as an OCC record for a dozen years. But in 1980, Wyatt never got his shot at the Summer Olympics because of the President Carter-invoked boycott of the Moscow Games that year. "For-swimming, that's the ultimate goal,• Wyatt said of the Olympics. "That's the Super Bowl of swimming ... it was pretty tough on m e, because my college career was over and it was time to enter the real world. •1 did have a good chance (of qualifying for the '80 Games). The door was open there. It was just a matter of having a good swim on that day (at the U.S. Olympic 1i'ials).
