as a parent's rite
of passage as W3ll
The afternoon sun hung
in the eucalyptus trees
as the school's auto
shop teacher delivered his
words of wisdom to the Class
of 2000.
"Remember,• he said,
•change your oil and your oil
filter every 3,000 miles.•
The school choir swelled
into full voice on that note
and the stu-
dents -
wearing
their caps
and gowns
and tennis
shoes and
platform
heels and
smiles-
strolled
across the
campus
The
road to
graduation
is a
collision of
emotions.

significance of changing your
oil every 3,000 miles.
Baccalaureate is a small
drum.roll before graduation, a
~ moment for speech and song.
It's not a requirement and.
hence, attendance is spotty.
One assumes that if not for
the strong will of many a
mom. nobody would attend
this somewhat forgotten rite
of passage.
"You are kidding?"
That was my son's first
thought when I broke the
good news that he'd be
attending baccalaureate and
that. no, board shorts were
not the attire of the day and,
yeah, that funky cap with the
blue-and-gold tassel would
be sitting neatly atop his.
bead, thank you very much.
"Nobody goes to that.•
I told him that was hard to
believe. Nobody?
He sighed and rolled his
eyes. "I'm going to be, like,
the only person there.•
The road to graduation is
a collision of emotions.
There's relief. There's pride.
There's melancholy. There's
laughter. There's tension.
There's joy.
The cap and gown -for
the moment tossed across a
chair in my son's room as
casually as a pair of jeans -
is a symbol with various
meanings. My wife and I see
it as accomplishment. To my
son, though, it is the uniform
of freedom, a goofy little out-
fit you wear as briefly as pos-
sible before you charge
headlong into summer and
begin the lazy, unspoiled
countdown to college.

est days in Andre Stewart's young
life. He should be donning a cap
and gown. lining up next to friends
and classmates and accepting his
high scboo!.diploma.
Sadly. a tragic car accident on
the Pomona Freeway in May took
18-year-old Stewart's life, but it will
not keep his family from treasuring
the moment on his behalf.
Knowing her son's deep desire
to graduate from Newport Harbor
High School, Sonja William will put
on a gown today and accept Stew-
art's diploma in his stead.
"When he was laid to rest, that
was dosure for me. That's when it

with the love of the ocean,
waves and each other.
On Tuesday, 20 surfers gath-
ered on the beach to express that
connection with their friend. John
Richard "Dickey• Jones, 52, who
died June 9 of heart failure. They
held a surfer's farewell memorial
service for Jones south of New-
port Pier.
It's a tie that can't be broken -
not even by d~ath.
"There's a bond. All surfers
have a bond with one another
worldwide,• sakl Steve Farwell, 34.
The professional longboard
surfer said that bond comes with
the passion for the sport. Surfers
1have turned their sport into a cul-
ture that follows certain traditions.

and to help distribute stick-
ers to stop babies being
abandoned in dumpsters.

for permits to expand. He
is proposing to construct
two-and tnree-story build·
ings for 1 f new guest
rooms, 2,060 square feet of
retail space and a partially
open parking garage.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
The proposal exceeds
the basic allowable floor
area, and building height
(by five feet). In addition,
the existing re.tail building
and pool area' south of .
Ocean Front would have to
be demolished. Planning
staff has said the project
can work with certain con·
ditions in place.
HEARING ON CONEXANT
PROJECT
The Planning Commis-
sion is scheduled to hold a
public hearing on a pro-
posal by Conexant Systems,
Inc. for 566,000 square feet
of additional industrial,
office and lab space in four
new buildings. The busi-
ness, located on Jamboree
Road, also wants to build
two new parking structures
and landscape the rest of
the 25-acre site.
WHAT TO -EXPECT:
Although the project
has yet to be approved,
several City Council mem-
bers have vo~ their sup-
port for the expansion. The
planning staff has indic.at·
ed that the commission
should recommend
approval of the traffic
study and environmental
report. Commissioners also
expect to continue the
hearing July 6.
KOLL CENTER REQUEST TO
BE STUDIED ,
Commissioners will
review a draft environmen-
tal report in study session
for a proposal to build a
10-story tower with
250,000 square feet of
office space within the Koll
Center Newport Planned
Community.
The project, which

these people rush·to emer-
gency scenes on a moment's
notice.
No, they're not firefight-
ers, but ordinary citizens
who receive special training
through a community pro-
gram designed to save
themselves and others dur-
ing catastrophic events.
The Community Emer-
gency Response Team pro-
gram, offered by the New-·
port Beach Fare and Marine
Departme nt, begins today.
People can still sign up for
the nine-week course.

team.went about enforcing what is
becoming status quo, but the basket-
ball team was all about breaking
new ground during the 1999-00 boys
athletic year at Costa Mesa High.
Coach Jerry Howell's squad made
the football playoffs for a record
fourth straight time after claiming a
co-championship in the Pacific Coast
League.
Junior tailback CJ. Zuniga (2,015
rushing yards and 28 TDs) was All·
CIF aJ1.d the Newport-Mesa District
Offensive PJayer of the Year, while :
junior offensive guard Luther
Mitchell was also All-CIF.
First-year coach Bob Serven and
senior Ryan Naff (second-team All·
CIF) helped lead the basketball team
to an unprecedented 17 -4 start and
its first playoff berth since 1992.
The baseball team contended for
a playoff spot until the final day of
the season and traclc and field fin.

Senior Greg Stewart defended his
PCL titles in the 100 and 200 meters
and was fourth in CIF in the latter,
while Rami Ghebrekious (3,200) and
Mike Whittman (100-yard breast-
stroke) also earned PCL crowns.
Ryan Perryman was an Ortioge
County All-Star in football and also
started in basketball and volleyball,
while several other individuals
earned accolades.
Jeff Montoya (golf), Deve Weir
(football and basketball), Nate Jones
(basketball and volleyball), Jose
Perez (soccer) and Robert Hulliger
(shot put and discus), all seniors,
went out with a flourish.

time.
Twenty years ago, McGriff
was so milted at being the
absolute last man picked in
the NFL draft that he fled
directly to Canada for a tryout
in the CFL.

underdog, forfeited his 1980
irrelevance to Arkansas quar-
terback Kevin Scanlon, the
next-to-la.st piclc in the NFL
draft that year by the Rams.
But McGriff, an award-
winning offensive lineman at
Florida. A&M, was cut in •
Canada that summer and
then showed up late to train-
ing camp with the Pittsburgh
Steelers, who selected
McGriff 333rd and dead last
in the '80 NFL draft.
McGriff not only made the
squad that year in Pittsburgh,
but lasted three years in the
NFL, then three more years
in the USFL with the
Michigan Panthers and
Memphis Showboats.
In 1981 , McGriff also had
a change of heart ebo~t
lrrelevant Week and asked
IW founder Paul Salata, who
has never said no in his life,
if he could make amends. So
Salata fixed Irrelevant Week
VI so that McGriff and the
legit '81 last choice, Delaware
tight end Phil Nelson, were
roosted, toasted and boasted
all week in Newport Beach.
"To tell you the truth, in all
my years playing pro foot-
ball, nothing tops (lrrelevant
Week),• McGri.ff said, after
Mr. Irrelevant XXV was wel-
comed ashore at the Newport
Dunes, which hosted its first
IW event.
To this day, McGriff is
known as Mr. Jrrelevant 5
1/2, after serving as Nelson's
caddie and bodyguard.
In 1996, McGr1ff was
named to the NCAA Division
l·AA Football Hall of Fame
along with Walter Payton of
Jackson State and Terry
Bradshaw of Louisiana Tech

McGriff, these days, is
married and the father of two
children. He's a teacher and
coach at Dillard High in Pt.

I t's been nearly a year-10
months to be exact -since I
began wodcing at the Dally Pilot.
And, I'll admit u. before I took this
job, I traveled down to Orange
County four times during my four
years at USC. I visited my cousin in
lJvine three times and· I drove •
through Orange County once while
heading to San Diego. The return
trip from San Diego was my fifth.

When r started my job down in
Newport-Mesa, I got here just in
time to be around three state cham-
pions (team and individual),
seven section crowns and 23
league championships by Newport
Harbor, Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa

pretty much everything. .
No sport blew my mind quite like
volleyball. Another reporter told me
it was just sick the amount of volley-
ball talent in Newport Beach.
Th.ere were lots of memorable
· · volleyball moments, ~e how Coro-
na del Mar's boys team dismantled
El Tora thoroughly in the CIF South-
ern Section Division I quarterfinals,
and bow the University of San Diego
High fans were impressed by CdM's
Dimitra Havriluk during a CrF State
Division D first-round girls match.
And then there's Newport Har-
bor'~ incomparable April Ross, who
led the Tars to section and state vol-
leyball. championships. The match
that sticks out in my mind is the
Sailors' CIF Southern Section Divi-
sion I-AA quart.erlinal against Esper-

And then there were the sports 1
knew nothin' about growing up m
Chicago, llke water polo. The first
water polo game I covered was a big
one. Newport Harbor vs. Long
Beach Wilson. l got a crash course in
the intricacies of the sport from
Dwight Belden 10 minutes before
the game and I learned the ru1es as I
watched.

Now, I'm not only familiar with
the sport, I learned to like water polo
a lot. And I can barely swim.
I was abJe to go to Belmont Plaza
twice, once to see CdM's boys water
polo teani win the Division II crown,
and the second time to watch the
Sea Kings' girls team almost take the
Division IV title.
There were sports I became a
regular in, like softball I did not see
a lot of swimming, but I was fortu-
nate enough to see Newport Harbor
sophomore Aaron Peirsol in action ·
before I see him on 1V this swnmer
at the Olympics.
Starting from the league finals, . ,
track and field was a weekly part of·
my routine.
I stumbled upon a banner year for
Newport-Mesa track athletes and I
got to follow CdM's Liz Morse, New-
port's Thevor Jones and Mesa's
Sharon Day all the way to the state
track finals. In contrast. the reporter
sitting next to me at the state prelim-
manes traveled five hours from
Stocktoo to see a pole vaulter finish
sixth in the prelims ..
There were tons of impressive
teams, like Estancia's dominantly
entertaining boys soccer team, CdM
girls 50Ccer team, Newport's guls
tennis squad, CdM's boys tenrus
unit, and all the winning basketball
teams.
And of course, football. I was
fortunate enough to witness New-
port's Uirilling Division VI champi-
onship victory over Irvine, and
watch Andre Stewart in act.ion for
one last time.
After 10 months, my head is
chock-full of memorable teams,
games, and especially athletes. I
could think of very few places bet-
ter for high school sports than New-
port-Mesa. Unless lacrosse picks up
around here, that would make
things perfect. So thanks to all the
kids, coaches and parents for malc-
ing my fust 10 months memorable.
