Go Mustangs I On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court came up with one of those decisions that make most of us think, "Don't these people have anything better to do7• ~ased on a Texas case over whether or not a prayer could be said before high school football games, the Really High, Court said "No way. no how, knock it off.• The actual ruling con- tained a little more legalese than that, but you get the point. Likewise, Costa Mesa's athletic directo and baseball coach, Kirk Bauer- meister, was no less to the · point. "lf anyone has a problem with praying, they have a problem with life,• said Coach Kirk. A little philosophical for a baseball coach, but well said, say 1. The tradition of saying a brief, voluntary team prayer before Mus~ tang games will go on - with or without the Supreme Court's, well, blessing, said the coach. How do these things get started? Let's review. It's customary at high school football games in the Lone Star State to have-er student take the micro- phone and offer a short, pre-kickoff prayer to • ... keep the kids safe, have a . COMMENJS & CURIOSITIES good game, etc., etc." Believe it or nof, some parents at a public high school had a schmoo over the pregame prayers, and filed a complaint. What's interesting, though, is who filed 'the complaint. Was it an agnostic? An atheist? Did Madalyn Mur- ray O'Hair finally tum up? Heavens, no. The original complaint was filed by two families -one Catholic and one Mormon. It is a funny old world, is it not? In 1995, the American Civil Liberties Union, God bless them, sued the local school board on behalf of the two families, claiming the pregame prayer was a form of public worship, and thus unconstitutional. They trotted into class with booj begs in hand and their math prob- lems ready to correct. But the little cubbyho es were empty. The walls were bare except for a forgotten black chart above the chalkboard with yellow letters that carefully listed the alphabet in cursive. And even as the students cor- rected their math problems, there was an antsy excitement in the air. "Everyone wants to do it because it's the last math problem we'll do,• said 9-year-old Rusb, who raised his hand skyward, eager to answer the questions. It was also one of the last bits of work they would do all day. From then on, it was games, games and more games. When his teacher, Scott Singer, announced it was time for silent speedball, Rush clamored onto the top of his desk. He explained in one quick rush of breath that to play, you'had to be on top of your desk and throw the ball. And iI you talk, you're out. "It's a lot of fun though. unless you're out. Then it's not a lot of fun," he said. It was a rousing game of tag in, on and around the playground. Young Rush had an ingenious tagging technique. He would lie in wait at one of the curves on the slide so that when the person who was "ir came by, he had multiple escape routes.
