A Caltrans official said a
clogged sprinkler at a Costa
Mesa construction site on the
Costa Mesa Freeway, which
passes over Main Street, satu-
rated the area with recycled
water overnight, creating the
muddy mess.
"It was a fiasco," said Mike
Smith, who was part of the Cal-
trans crew that deaned up the
mess. "There were cars sliding
everywhere."

wait until January to move

The school, which sits on
the comer of Newport Coast
Drive and Ridg~ {.>ark ~oad
in Newport Beach, was
scheduled to open Sept. 5
with 350 students in kinder-
garten through sixth grade.
Those children will now
spend the first four months or
school at Lincoln Elementary
School in Corona del Mar.

ents said they understand
and are bemg patient about

years, she has been a key player in
Sisterhood's tutoring program at Pomona
Elementary School in Costa Mesa, which
teadles first-graders how to read, write and

Marriott Hotels will pay
$200,000 to settle a lawsuit
brought by county prosecu-
tors who alleged the com-
pany improperly operated
underground fuel tanks,
the Orange County District
Attorney's Office
announced Tuesday.
Several Marriott loca-
tions were charged with
maintaining underground
diesel storage tanks in a
way that posed a risk of
leaks and prohibited proper
environmental monitorl.Qg.
The. problematic tanks
were at the Costa Mesa
Marriott Suites Hotel at 500
Anton Blvd.; the Newport
bouncer and bartender, was
diagnosed with cancer in 1988
and bas undergone multiple
surgeries.
The medical treatments
have been expensive and
friends have been rallying to
raise money for Gorman by
holding e ve nts at local bars
and restaurants.
Beach Marriott Hotel and
Tennis Club at 900 New-
port Center Drive; the
Newport Beach Marriott
Suites Hotel at 500 Bayview
Circle; and at locations in
Anaheim and Los Alamitos.
Maniott did not admit
any wrongdoing, according
to a statement released by
the district attorney. There
is no evidence that any
environmental contamina-
tion was caused by the
operation of the tanks', the
statement said.
A spokesperson for Mar-
riott could not be reached
late Tuesday.

A gunman who allegedly
attempted to rob a nail salon
in Corona del Mar was appar-
ently so startling to patrons
that they jumped from their
chai1' and immediately Oed
the shop, police said.
The armed num. confused
by the quick and unexpected

so much as a penny for his
troubles.
He didn't get too far.
Authorities arrested

picion of armed robbery.

FAA announced Monday that
25 medium-sized airports
would receive new ground
radar systems in order to
reduce runway collisions. •
The new radar would help
controllers at John Wayne
scan runways and taxiways as
opposed to using binoculars
and relaying observations to
pilots.
The move could prove
inlitrumental for John Wayne,
which had the second-highest
rate of near-accidents last
year, with nine close calls on
its runways.

said airport activist and former
mayor Tom Edwards.
Many of the near-misses
involved private planes rather
than commercial airliners.
However, some locals who
support the conversion of the

Wayne is overcrowded and

activity, the probability of
occurrences increases,• said
