the hospital with possible spinal
injuries Sunday afternoon, lifeguards ·
said.

tain with the Newport Beach Fire
Department.
The identities of the injured swim-
mers, who were taken to Hoag Hospi-
tal, were not released Sunday. The
exact nature of their injuries had not
been determined.
This weekend was supposed to see
large surf pushing into local beaches,
a forecast that turned out to be overly
optimistic. As it turned out, the surf
was not more than·4 or 5 feet high.

very inviting yet it's strong enough
that inexperienced swimmers or
bodysurfers can become injured.·
Spinal injuries can be caused when
a wave slams a bodysurfer into the
sand on the ocean floor, Turner said.
They can also occur when swimmers
dive into the sand from the beach or
from a jetty or pier.
The injuries occurred between
noon and 4:30 p.m. at the Wedge. 15th
Street and in two cases, the Balboa
But Turner said the smaller waves
posed a threat to inexperienced
beachgoers.
"When the surf gets really big, a lot

FAIRGROUNDS -The Orange County Fair
closed on a high note Sunday, with officials say-
ing attendance levels for the 17-day event were
likely to break previous records.
The former record of ?85,944 was set m 1997.
said Becky Bailey-
Findley, general man-
ager of the fair and
exposition center.
As or 3 p.m. Sun-
day, officials had
counted 776,000
attendees, she said.
The numbers were
encouraging to Bailey-Findley, who said fair
officials had been working to put together pop-
ular programs.
"We've really tried to position the fair as a
fun, interesting family event and one that the
community can get involved in,• she said.
This year's fair, in addition to attracting large
crowds, also managed to be very orderly.

The other day, however, our harbor
apparently dkln't feel very well and
bad a very high temperature. In the
Balboa Besin area. the water hit 75
degrees. a level that makes the algae
family celebrate and throw a big party.
A day at the wacky races
The annual Flight of the Lasers caters to the
serious sailor and those looking for a little fun

The 65th annual Flight of the
Lasers took place Sunday after-
noon. The event is a roughly
seven-mile race through New-
port Harbor in laser-class sail-
boats.
•1t was moderate wind and
very nice and sunny,• said Sey-
mour Beek, the event's chair-
ma.n. "I think everybody had a
good time."
Although the event att.racts
excellent small-boat sailors, it
also tends to appeal to people
who enjoy the wacky element
in the race, Beek said. The
awards given out reflect. the
split between serious competi-
tion and lighthearted diver-
sion.
Taking home the ·Adversity
in the -Pace of Danger" award
was Hannah Dean, who contin·
ued sailing when her brother
Nathan fell out of the boat near
the finish line.
·She sailed across the finish

The algae must have invited the
dorado family as 11 showed up just
the other day. However, it seems to be
the bass family that has anived en
mass with a scattering of yellowtails,
barra.ciidas, calico bass, a few alba-
cores, a couple of marlin and even a
swordfish. • ·
A SWOJ'dfi.sh and three marlin were
caught last week between Newport,
Oceanside and Catalina. These
spedes traditionally run through Octo-
ber.
However, when the water warms
up, the albacores head out They like
temperatwes in the 62-to 65-degree
range.
One species of marine life that
becomes VeJ.X prevalent when the
water gets warm is algae. A one-or
two-inch growth ot algae on the bot·
tom of your boat can C'05t you 2 to .C
knots of speed and will throw your
fuel curve off the page.
In reality, a 30-foot powerboat with
significant algae growth can cost you
an extra $50 in fuel for a round-trip
ride to Catalina, whereas a monthly
bottom-maintenance service will only
cost you around $40. .
R1~ your boat weekly also will
help algae growth. Whether
the bottom is clean or not, you still
have to pump your tanks full of
dinosaur wine. • At Marine Chevron, the price of
diesel has dropped significantly in the
past few weeks .
For 200 to 400 gallons, diesel will
run you around a St.23 per gallon. For
the same amount of regular gas, it will
run around Sl.88, good reasons to hire
that bottom-cleaning service .
Whatever the issue concerning a
boa.t. a monthly maintenance program
will save you money in the long run.
Dealing with k>c4l. licensed and
aa::redited service maintenance com-
panies is always advised. ·
Boating season ls in full swing, so
remember to check your gau~-; tte-quently, always i1,lspect your e
before you start your enginel, check
oil levels and always have a del:lgnat-
ed driver if the need presents ttself.

Arizona side, not far from Blythe.
Ritchie, however, got off to !fl
late start that year, because of a
serious virus in. the lining of bis
heart, which hospitalized him
most of the summer in '65.
"I recovered, thankfully,•
said Ritchie, who added that his
favorite gridiron moments were
the fun times enjoyed with bis
teammates Wlder the Friday
Night Llghts.

Ritchie sold his business, R&S
CornP.uters in Costa Mesa, two
years ago after 10 years on the
JOb, while some other
investments have paid
off for him.
"I've been pretty
blessed," said Ritchie,
who enjoys the
Colorado River lifestyle
with his family, and is
currently building a
house in Cibola, Ariz.
•We had a really good team
(in '86) and went 5-5, but the
games we lost were by small
margins. What I remember most
about playing was the
camaraderie and having some
· good buddies and
friendships on the
team. Some of those
friends I still have to
this day.·

Mesa graduate. "I

Beach, 49-18. in Week
7 of his senior year,

Coast League favorites.

out and play at the river on the
weekends between work and
stuff," he said.
Ritchie was a 6-foot,
175-pound senior for the
Mustangs in the fall of 1986,
when he caught 43 passes for
822 yards and seven touchdowns
from quarterback Mike Crowe.
Ritchie, who also played
safety on defense, was an
All-CIF Southern Section
Desert-Mountain Conference
selection for Coach Tom
Baldwin's 5-5 squad.
Having never played
organized football prior to his
Junior year, Ritchie played
basketball and competed in
track his first two years al Costa
Mesa, then, at Baldwin's request.

"I never considered playing
football,• said Ritchie, who
caught four passes, including the
Mustangs' only touchdown, in
heated PCL game, and
a Laguna Beach player
reportedly apologized for his part
in the fight a few days later at
the Mustangs' practice facility.
In track and field, the latest
honoree in the Daily Pilot Sp0rts
Hall of Fame still holds the
school record in the high jump
at 6 feet 8 inches. Ritchie also
competed in the triple jump and
long jump, and ran hurdles and
relays (in which Baldwin, ~ an
assistant track coach, discovered
Ritchie and recruited him for
football).
In Ritchie's junior year in the
spring of '86, he finished second
at the ClF 3-A Finals at Cenitos
College to Estanda's Eric Dom,
who cleared 6-9 to Win the
section title.
Ritchie went to Orange Coast
College for a year, but realized
football wasn't in bis future. He
competed in track for the Pirates,
however, and once did the
decathlon.
These days, Ritchie is building
a house in Obola, Ariz., with his
wife, Christine, and two boys:

Class of 1981 beat the Class of
'86, 52-48, to win the 12th annual Jack Errion Memori-
al Basketball Tournament, the players slowly sauntered
over to the bench in the wake of their annual hoops
marathon.
•1t feels good today, but it'll feel bad tomorrow,"
Class of '81 member Dan Hess said.
There will be a lot of groaning heard on Sunday
morning in the Corona. del Mar and Newport Be<tch
area, especially from alumni of the Class ol '81 and '86.
They played six games in eight hours on Saturday at
Corona del Mar to try to prove alter all these years that
they're the best basketball team in school history. At
least for a year. .
"There's a lot of pride,• Oass of '86 star Jeff F~r
said,, "CdM has seen a lot of success over the years, and
they won a lot of CIF championships. They want to
come out and prove that they're the best year.•
For the past 12 years, class pride and the opportuni-
ty to mingle again with old classmates have brought for-
mer Sea Kings back regularly. Most of the players in the
16-team field have participated every year, revisiting
past"~thletic glories, as well as CdM boys basketball
Coach Pa\11 Orris, who has been with the Sea Kings
since 1970.
•it feels good to see that CdM basketball meant
enough to these players to come back every year and
participate," be said.
One of the teams which did not compete every year,
strangely enough, is lh..e Jack Errion champion, the
Class of '61. They only h8"d three players a year ago, not
enough to field a team. . -
But with ClF Player of the Year (basketball) Jeff
Pries, who led CdM's boys basketball and baseball
teams, to CIF championships in 1981, they built up a 19-
poinl lead at one point and held on. Pries led '61 with 22
points, and Steve Moore scored 11. Hess contributed
seven points.
But JL was their opponent, the Class o1 '86, which
drew the attention of spectators, and teenage girls in
particular. That's because Sugar Ray frootman and rock •
n' roll coverboy Mark McGrath was on the team.
McGrath, arguably Cd.M's most famous alumnus, last
competed lo the Jack Errton Townament three years
ago, when bis band was an unknown punk band. But
when McGrath came back on Saturday, he was a inter-
nationally famous singer filling the role of baclcup
guard.
"Everybody knows who I am, but they don't make a
big deal about it and that's cool,• he said. •They still
treat me like the hotshot runt I was in high school."
McGrath and Joseph Mitchell, known as Mc:G, the
director of the upcoming Cameron Diaz-Drew Barry-·
more film version of •Charlie's Angels,• were public fig-
ures on the Class of '86, but it was Fryer who was the
go-to-guy on the team. He was a starter on Paul West-
head's blgh-fiying 1990 Loyola Marymowit team that
·reached the Elite Eight with Bo Kimble and the late
Hank Gathers. ·
Fryer scored 20 points in the final game before head-
ing off to Germany ~d bis pro team lo Bergheim.
