Sports Complex weeks before its
first scheduled soccer game.
lWo AYSO regions -one serv-
ing players almost entirely from
Costa Mesa, the other made up of
mostly Newport Beach children -
are fighting for playing ti.me on one
of the lighted fields that opened last
month.
In mid-July, the city's recreation
staff, following published guide-
lines, divided use of the field
between the two regions based on
the number of registered Costa
Mesa players.
"The City Council dedicated
ti.me and resources to acquire the
Parm for the benefit of all Costa
Mesa youth,• said Steve Hayman,
the city's director of administrative
services.
AYSO Region 97, which Com-
missioner Steve Rasch says bas
1,700 players, including 650 from
Costa Mesa, was allocated one of
the three lighted fields for four
hours Monday nights, two hours
Wednesday nights and two hours
Thursday nights.
But Jon Zich, commissioner of
AYSO Region 120, where all but
about 30 of the 1,400 players are
from Costa Mesa, said the Newport
Beach-dominant Region 97 is tread-
ing on its turf.
"The relationship between the
two regions bas been very amicable
for a long time,• he said. ·Part of
the reason is there as been an
understanding and respect for
boundaries. The rub is that New-
port Beach sees fields in our part of
town tha t they want. But it's our
part of town.•

leisurely late-afternoon dip in the
ocean last week quickly turned
into serious business when the
largest swells of the summer
forced a junior lifeguard to put
his skills to the test.
On Aug. 1, 11-year-old Russell
Mycom, a member of the New-
port Beach Junior Ufeguards,
wu dodging waves with three of
his friends at Corona del Mar
State Beech.
One of the boys ventured out
too far and ltarled having trouble
once the seta began to peak.
"'I learned to always stay with
your victim; never leave them 'behind and hold their
hand when you go under the waves. 1 told him,
'Don't worry. When we get in, we'te going to get you
a towel and w'!rm you up.' "'

The rescued boy was the only
one in the group who was not a

off duty shortly after 5 p.m . Soon
after, the fourth boy was over-
whelmed by the massive surf.
"He didn't know what precau-

were pretty big.•

what will be Manners Elementary
School's fifth pnncipal in the last
nine years.
Mary Ann Ehret's resignabon this
Sl\IDDler was the fourth accepted at
the school since Bruce Crockard left
in 1991.
While each administrator had dil-
ferent reasons for leavmg the New-
port Beach school, principal
turnovei: has become an alarming
trend on the campus -and within
the Newport-Mesa Unified School
District. '
This year alone, six principals
have left the district, including
recent departures of Costa Mesa
High School's Andy Hernandez and
Ensign Intermediate School's Allan
Mucerino.
In the last four years, the school
boa.rd has consistently had to hire at
least five new prinapals each year,
said nine-year school board member
Martha Fluor.

• Being a Big Brother
brings big rewards.
0 nee he got a taste of what it
was like to help children in
need, 28-year-old Michael
Price kept craving that feeling.
When Price was in school at Ari-
zona State University, the adminis-
tration stressed the importance of
students performing community ser-
vice. So he went out and volunteered
his time at a child crisis center.
•J'd volunteer my time to play
with the kids, talk to them and in
some cases comfort them if they bad
just been dropped off the night
before by their dad who beat them,
or because their family had no food
and couldn't take care of them for a
while,• he said.
It was that experience that led
him to volunteer for the Big Brother
Big Sisters program when be settled
in Newport Beach a little more than
a year ago.
Now the consulting manager of
DigiTerra, an e-buslness systems
integration company in Costa Mesa,
Price gladly takes time out of his
busy schedule to volunteer.
Since they met in April of 1999,
Price and his little brother, 9-year-old
Tyler from Huntington Beach. have

man of Connecticut as his Democ-
ratic vice presidential running
mate.

most Americans as the senator

ly candidates, despite
acknowledgments that they
could split the vote if they
both run against incumbent
Tom Thomson.
Wynn, a former city man-
ager, and Heffernan, 8i local
attorney, have talked about
the possibility that they could
)ose because they could
divide votes.
Despite this, the two say
they are determined to run.
Thomson's district includes
Harbor View, Spyglass Hill
and Jasmine Creek.
•If two challengers run, it
will be more difficult to beat
an incumbent,• Wynn said.
"Then again, a vote split got
Phil Sansone elected.·
Wynn and Heffernan have
decided to go for it because
they have differing opinions
on the city's hottest topic -
the dueling traffic measures
that will appear on the
November ballot.
While Wynn is a strong
supporter of the Traffic Phas-
ing initiative. Heffernan has
said he has problems with 1t
and the competing Green-
light measure.
The Greenlight initiative
proposes to give residents the
final say on potential devel-
ol'ments that would create
more than 100 peak-hour car
trips, more than 100 homes or
more than 40,000 square feet
of floor area over what the
city's general plan allows.
The Traffic Phasing initia-
tive proposes to cement tqe
city's traffic law into the city
charter. The traffic ordinance
is a city regulation designed
to ensure that developers
whose projects generate
added traffic contribute to the
cost of improving intersec-
tions. Also, if voters approve
both initiatives, it would nulli-
fy the Greenlight measure il it
receives more vo~es.

Crystal Cove project
A group of Newport
Beach environmentalists is
planning to attend Thurs-
day's California Coastal
Commission hearing to
express concerns over pro-
posed development above
Crystal Cove State Park.
The group, which includes
members of The Alliance to
Rescue Crystal. . Cove,
Orange County CoastKeeper
and the League for C9astal
Protection, will attend 'J'.hurs-
day's hearing at the Water-
front Hilton Beach Resort in
Huntington Beach.
The point of the effort,
said Laura Davick, director of
the Alliance, is to raise con-
cerns about Irvine Co. water
treatment plans that are
being proposed in connec-
tion with future residential
development in the Crystal
Cove area.
"This is basically the last
opportunity for issues to be
heard for the Irvine Co. pro-
ject,· Davick said.
Irvine Co. representatives
could not be reached for
comment. Earlier this year,
the developer made revisions
to its plans in an effort to
work with local environmen-
talists.
The project involves mod-
ifications to the way residen-
tial runoff would be dealt
with in a 980-acre, 635-home
development above Crystal
Cove. At one point. the Irvine
Co. had hoped to use a
detention :basin in Muddy
Creek to collect runoff.
Under the new proposal, the
basin would be eJiminated.
Davick said the group
hopes to highlight the way
the plans would affect water
quality in the ocean off Crys-
tal Cove and the, potential
impacts of development on
public access to the state
park.

Surfline, added that the public
safety benefits outweigh some
local surfers' concerns that
they may have to share their
waves with the world.

overcrowded,• he said. •As

idents, but also downplayed
the potential effects the cam-
eras might have on beach
crowds.
"It's a proximity issue,•
Ridgeway said. "People in

junior lifeguards this summer.

kept bis word.
It was Russell's six years of
swim lessons, participation in
the junior lifeguards program
and a tender heart that pro-
vided him with the skills to
perform the save, said proud
mother Suzanne Mycom.

neighbor, gazing with awe
as the legendary coach
directed the likes of star
running back Mickey
Flynn.
Later, as an All-CCF
Southern Section offensive
guard, Preeman basked in
the golden age of Orange
County high school football,
when 10,000 spectators ·
regularly attended games
involving "The Colony." A
whopping 33,374 watched
Anaheim defeat Mater Dei
in the 1966 CCF major
division semifinals his
senior year, sWl the
second-largest crowd in
section gridiron history and
a night Freeman considers
the highlight of his
distinguished playing
career.

to appreciate Van
Hoorebeke's attention to
detail, innovative film study,
weight training and
exhaustive scouting reports,
Freeman took a dissenting

prime and a daughter with
golf clubs in her bands, the
five-time Newport Beach
women's club cluDnpion,
originally from New Zealand,
is spending mote tiip.e
commuting to the club from
the family's Corona del Mar
home, which is scheduled to
be rebuilt soon.
Albright and her husband,
Jock, enjoyed a spacious
view of the Pacific Ocean
from their old home in CdM,
but the neighborhood wasn't
kid friendly, so they pulled
up anchor and bought in
another part of town.
With two children (Katie,
13, and Charlie, 12) and the
family preparing lQ live in a
nearby rental for 10 months
while their new home gets
built, Albright expects to
spend less time on the
practice greens come
September.
So, for now, with kids
attending various summer
camps and the big move
another four weeks away,
Albright can unwind with
leisurely thoughts of playing
in the fourth annual Tea Cup
Classic -Friday at Big
Canyon Country Club with a
2 p.m. tee time.

before Tea Cup Classic IV. ·ru have to be careful how

title in April with four sub-80
rounds (76-79-74-77 -306),
followed by Sandi Coffer,
Brenda Parrott and Janice
Sauter (first net) in the
championship flight. Albright
was introduced to golf by her
husband, whom she met in
Cabo San Lucas in 1981 and
married two years later,
never to return to her native
land to live.
As a 19 handicapper in
1989, Albright started taking
golf lessons from Paul Hahn,
now the Newport Beach
head professional, and her
scores began to drop. By
1996, Albright was the club
champion.
"She hits balls every day,
unless she's out of town, and
that's why she's a 0.0 index.•
Hahn once said.
Albright entered the final
round of the Newport Beach
club championship with a
nine·stroke lead, then won
by 11 shots. She sank a
15-foot, upbill bird!& putt on
17, after hitting the middle of
the green, to solidify her win.
