She doesn't have to farm out her answers to anyone \
I n a .big blue floral hat, with a sunny
breeze swooping past her and haystacks
behind her, volunteer Lois Davis looked
like a poster girl for agriculture Tuesday as sl\e manned a Centennial Fann desk at the
Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa.
An 11-year docent for the farm through-
out the year, Davis gives tours every
Monday morning to schoolchildren-some
of whom have never held a live chick in
their bands and some of whom have no
idea where c:arrots really come from.
·1Wo of the things that are rather sur-
plising are how the adults who come with
their children know so little, and the kids
who have never touched an animal other
than their dog or cat.· the 77-year-old said.
The former president of the Orange
For a
GOOD CAUSE
County Herb Society is also a third-gener-
ation Californian with a gardening ,and .
farming background. ' Davis bas a gardetj at her Hunttngtoq
Beach home, a cat. a tortoise that belongs
to her granddaughter and various other
pets that her grandson always seems to
bring home.
At the fann, the volunteer bas grown
comfortable teaching about cows, pigs,
sheep, goats, chicken and other farm ani-
mals. She helps cbl1dren plant seeds in lit-
tle pots of soil so they can take the poten-
tiaI plant home to care for.
And she loves the simple fact that she
provides inquisitive kids with information.
During the fair, she answers visitors'
questions about the farm and about farm-
ing.
Some want to know why their zucchini
didn't get ripe, and others ask about grow-
ing crops in general.
Davis usually bas the answers, partly
because of her agricultural history, but
emphasizes that you don't have to be an
expert to do the job well
•To be a volunteer, you doo't really need
to know a lot about animals and vegetables,
but you can't be scared of kids,• she said.

the 24 Hour Fitness on Anton
Boulevard when the Costa
Mesa police SWAT team
ordered ever-yone to the floor,
Duong dropped to the floor,
along with everyone else, and
w as-arrested without incident.
Costa Mesa Police Lt. Dale
Birney said.
•He's got a propensity for
violence and a propensity to use
violent weapons, so when we
became aware of the fact that he
was in the Orange County area,
that caused us a great deal of

Costa Mesa residents
Edward Lwanga Mukasa, 33,
and Ouistine Kahnen Chen, 19,
were arrested on suspicion of
harbori~g a fugitive and of
being accessories to murder
after the fact, Birney said.
Duong, who appeared on
•America's Most Wanted " in
April 2000, is accused of shoot-
ing four people to death at The
International Oub in El Monte
on May 6, HlY9.
In San Jose, Duong is want-

attempted murder and robbery.
San J~ police were called
to a Vietnamese grocery store at
11:22 a.m. May 3, 1997, in
response to a shooting, said San
J<>&e Police Sgt Steve Dixon.
The owner of the store went
to the bank to get money and
then returned to his marke t,
Dixon said.
•As he drove up the drive-
way, two males came up to him
and demanded money,. he said.
"Before he could even react,
they took him out of bis car, shot
him in the leg and took the
money bag. We believe it was
Duong who fired several shots at
him, one in the chest. and he
died. He is extremely violent,
no question about it."
Duong was charged with
murder, attempted murder and
robbery for that incident.
Dixon said Duon9 was also
acx:used d a 1996 robbery homi-
cide involving a computer store
in Fremont. and Andrew Black,
media representative for the San
Francisco division of the FBI,
said the bureau charged him
with unlawful flight to avoid
prosecution for that murder.
Birney said Costa Mesa police
worked with the FBI, as well as
other local agencies, for four to.
six weeks to arrest Duong.
The three different jurisdic-
tions with warrants for Duong's
arrest are now trying to decide
where Duong is ~oing to face
the charges. he said.

SANTA ANA -Newport

As expected, the Orange
County Board of Supervisors

lines Tuesday that would shift
the dty out of the 5th District.
represented by Tum Wilson, and
into the 2nd District.
Jim Silva will represent the
city if the plan is approved Aug.
14.
The tentative approval was
unanimous.
On Tuesday. the board took
public testimony on the qew
map, known as "plan JC." It
had emerged Friday as the lead-
ing proposal of 24 possibilities.
"This is a good map for the
people of today," Supervisor
Chuck Smith said. "And it will
also be a good map for the futum
of Orange County over the next
tOyears."
The board is required by Jaw
to redraw district boundaries
every decade after the U.S. cen-
sus is completed.
Officials in Newport Beach
·lauded the plan, because it
would replace Wilson, who
opposes an airport at the El Thro
Marine Corps Air Station. with
pro-airport advocate Silva.
•The dty of Newport Beach
would look favorably on that."

"We didn't get everything
we wanted,• said the group's
policy director, Art Montez. "We

Under the new plan, Santa
Ana is united in the 1st District.
A handful c:i other cities will be
shuffled into other disbids in the
plan. Only two cities will be split
into two districts, oompared to 13
under the present alignment
With El Toro the issue of the
day, Airport Working Group
spokesman Dave Ellis said Silva
makes more sense as Newport
Beach's supervisor than Wilson.
"We'll have a supervisor who
reflects Newport Beach," Ellis
said •Silva's always been reflec-
tive of the city's position."

But bealUl8 it ii now the
law Of the land, it aeems to
me the dty and Greenlight's
soldiers would do better U
they stopped drcling each
other like a pair of jacked up
roosters in a cock fight. The
·dty and the development
community owe Greenlight
some respect by not bringing
'projects to Ule table that are
outside the box. At the same
time, Greenlight's people
should stop lurking tn the tall
grass waiting to shoot down
projects as they clear the tree
tops. They should instead
haul their bodies down to
City Hall and speak up.
Absent either, we'll contin·
ue to see these two sides fail
to yield to one another in the
planning and development
future of the dty. And the col-
lisions won't be pretty.

O h. oh, Tonr. 1 th1nking again. But you'll really like um one, folks. Let'1 run it up tbe ftagpoJe and see U

Throughout my three auinmers of covering these bravados,
I always get asked the same questions by ~ta from both

Well. I've come up with the answer to
all thole q'l\41Uom. Drum mil paeue. ...
The Dally Pilot All-Star Challenge! It
baa a nice ring to it, don't you tblnkf
A.a ot now, there are four Majors
Otvilion teams, Costa Mesa Natiooal and
American Uttle League as well u two
teams usodated with the Newport Beach
Uttle League.
Alter the smoke clears from District
All-Star Tournament action, the winner
from the annual Costa Mesa Mayor's Cup
(CMNll vs. CMAll) would play the
winner of a two-out-d-three tournament
between the two NBLL clubs (we'll come
up with a catchy name on that towney later) fn a battle for
local bragging rights.
The DPASC would be a two-of-three tournament with
home field advantage alternating every year between
Newport and Costa Mesa. Basically, the same thing Major
League Baseball does each year for the World Serles.
Could a tournament like this ever take placef Why
wouldn't It? Prom what I understand. the Mayor's Cup Is
July 25, 26 and 28 (if necessary). Newport could have its
two-of-three around that same time and we could set the
DPASC up for the following weekend.
Game 1 held at Costa Mesa, Game 2 held at Corona del
Mar and Game 3, if necessary, held at a neutral site
somewhere. Then, each year, the winning team would get to
host the tiebreaking game.
So I officially lay down the challenge to the presidents of
both little leagues to get this going. Keep me posted and let
me know bow I can help.
But there are other ohstacles to consider. I'm swe the
Newport Harbor Baseball Association would want to play, too.
I'm not sure how that would work considering there are some
major differences in the rules, such as leading off, stealing,
etc.
Perhaps an agreement could be arranged to find some
neutral ground on rules, but that might be a can of worms too
tough to deal with.
It starts with phone calls, so to the youth baseball
presidents of Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, start chatting
and see what we can come up with.
By the way, a poll in the office here says Costa Mesa
National wins It, in three, over the Newport Beach survivor.

Dlstrtct 62 Tournament action, could be on the mound for
the upcopllng Costa Mesa Mayor's Cup. The two-out-of-
three matcbup between the CMALL and the Costa Mesa
Nattonal Uttle League All-Stan ii slated for July 2S, 26 and
28 (lf necessary).
