Newport Harbor's biggest yacht By John Bl•lch N ewport Harbor has seen its share of large yachts through the yea.rs. There was the Motor Ship Stranger at 230 feet; the Goodwill at 161 feet, the Pioneer at 172 feet; and the Steam Yacht Stranger at 175 feet. However, the largest yacht to ever enter Newport Harbor is the Motor Yacht Vida, at 234 feet. This large clipper-bowed diesel yacht considered Newport Harbor her home port from 1939 to 1942. Vida had a beam of 34 feet and a draft of 12 feet. She was powered with two Winton dR!sel engines, having 422 brake horsepower each. With this power. she could auise at 16 knots. Cambrloas, her original name, was designed by Cox and Stevens of New York and built by Pusey and Jones of Wilmington, Del. in 1930. When Earle F. Halliburton, a member of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, acquired the yacht, her name was changed to Vt.da, the name of bis daughter. For the most part, I thought it was a good exchange and lots of good infor- mation.,. But tHe pGrt that disturbed me, and I'm sure I'm not alone, was the lack of decorum on the part of some in the audience -on both sides of the debate, mind you. There were hisses and sarcastic laughter and shouts of •liar• and other insults. While it's probably not surpris- ing that this heated battle has dete rio- rated into a school yard shoving match, it is disappointing nonetheless. How can we expect our young peo- ple to act in a respectful and courteous manner when they have examples of adults acting so foolishly? Whatever happened to the idea that we can have honest disagreements in opinion? U the actions and comments of that crowd for the radio broadcast are any indication of what the future beholds for the debate of th.ls land, then we all have a long road ahead. • TONY DODERO is the editor.
