HELP WANTED Costa Mesa seeks lower level coaches COSTA MESA -Costa Mesa High is seeking lower level girls volleyball coaches for the 2000 season. as well as a varsi- ty pitching coach for the 2001 baseball campaign. Interested applicants may phone Boys Athletic Director Kirk Bauermeister at (71 4) 424-8763. DEEP SEA Joseph Boo DAILY PILoT COSTA MESA -Four CIF Southern Section champi- onship banners hang at Costa Mesa Higb's aquatic center commemorating the titles won by the school's boys water polo program m a 1 (). year span from 1986 to '95. Five yea.rs later, those ban· ners are a memento from ancient history. After losing all but two players from last. year's 12-13 squad, the Mus- tangs almost put the varsity program on hiatus before enough athletes showed up in the summer to keep it going. So Costa Mesa boys water polo is still alive and kicking. "J let them know about the d ecade of dominance and what the program 1s at Mesa,· Coach Chris Avitia, entering his first season at the- helm, said. "But you've got to build to get into that position and hopefully we'll reach that someday.• The majority of Costa Mesa's players don't have water polo expenence and it's up to Avitia, who was the goalie on Mesa's 1992 CIF title team and '93 runner-up, to mold this group. •We have a lot to learn and not a lot of expenence, • Avt- tia said . • HopefuUy, we'll build on this year and tum the program around." Avitia does have two var- sity returners frQm last year inducting Mike Whifma.n. A senior entering his fourth year with the team, Whitman was one of the Mustangs' top players last year and he is the undisputed leader of th1s year's group. Avitia found out how invaluable Whib'nan is to his young team this sum- mer. "He's so much help.• Avi· tia said. "He's giving the other players a lot of help. He's an experienced guide. I can't get in the water and teach them everything, so he's the go-to- guy who demonstrates every- thing l try to teach them." THE llUSWIGS ~ COSTA MESA HIGH I BOYS WATER POLO Junior Chasen Marshall is the other returner. "He's a really good, qwck player, and he's got a good shot,· Avitia said. ·He 's entenng bis tl:urd year and I think he'll unprove from last year.· Behind those two, fresh- man Brian Tipton is the only familiar face for Avttia. The younger brother of former Mesa poloist Matt Tipton, Bn- an played under Aviba three years ago when he coached an t t-and-under team. Avilla will try to mold him mto Mesa's future goalie. "He's learning fast.• Aviba said. "He's young, so I can work with him for four years. We need a good defense wi\h a young team." Junior Steven Thomas played on Mesa's frosh/soph team last year, and that makes him valuable. Fresh- man Dennis Atkins and sophomores Matt Grubls1ch, John Santos. Steven Reyes, Kevin Neppl and Robert Rodnguez, are new to the high school water polo expe· rience. With so many green play- ers, Avilla acknowledges the team will take some lwnps this year But be hopes those losses will be a learrung item "They'll get beat a lot,· Avitia said, "but hopefully, they'll learn sometlung from those losses and use that to build on."
