I have fin.ally returned from cruis- ing in the Puget Sound, San Juan Islands, and Desolation Sound of northern Washing- ton and Canada aboard a nice yacht. Unlike cruising in Newport Harbor and most places in Southern California, one must prepare very carefully for a trip in these areas, which have many hazards not found in Newport. I can guarantee that in the North- west. boaters do not want to be caught cruising without a chart in band that shows submerged rocks nor do you want to auise at night in the paaages with numerous floating logs. 11dal changes of up to 18 feet aeate swift rapids in many JWroWS and make headway difficult for slow-moving vessels. I have said this before and 1 will say it again_-we do not give our fuel docks credit for the excellent service they provide and the little amount of fuel spilled considering the thousands of gallons pumped dally. In addition, the fuel docks and the harbor depart- ment are the two first places a visiting boater will make contact u Newport's unoffi- cial ambessadon, so think about that when you visit another distant harbor. This is one of the most devastating things that can ever happen to any vessel at sea and we must be 110% prepared to deal with it. As you can imagine, the hot Louisiana sun beat down on the crew during training, but this is one of those times that each member must put everything else aside and focus on learning their jobs. This new ship is definitely going to make the residents of Newport proud and safe. We have been in New Orleans for three days. We are getting many things placed aboard dwing our short stay here. Electronics, a few weapons, new gadgets, etc. It seems that the first malfunction we had with the ship after we got her was something that no •coasty• could Jive without -our gal- ley coffee maker. It has a small electrical short and must be replaced before we leave for our journey. Any- one who has spent time in the military will agree that coffee is a mainstay in every- one's diet. The crew is having a blast in New Orleans. The French Quarter is where most of the guys spend the little bit of off time they have. Of course, there are the casinos that are frequented also. Greenlight of course sailed to victory, and now we have learned that the Evans family, proprietors of the Dunes since the early 1970s, has put the resort up for sale. They are good people who have done good things for the community and no matter how anyone feels about overdevelopment or traffic, that fact should never be lost. A few RVs down the block, Debbie Fullerton has taken things a little fwther. The Chino Hills resident quit her office job a iew years ago and started renting out motor homes to production companies. Her clients include national magazines or 1V shows such as •America's Most Want- ed• that use the vehicles as makeup rooms. Her husband, Rick, a firefighter by trade, helps to run the business. Whenever possible, Fullerton grabs a motor home for her family and heads down to the Dunes. ·we never go anywhere else,· she said. "l would love to spend the whole summer here. We actually thought of trying some- thing new and drove to other resorts, but I said, 'No, we're staying at the Dunes.'• During the summer, family and friends join the Pullertons at the resort. "It's kind of like home,• she said. "But definitely much more relaxed."
