As a quiet boy named David Kollun, the New Jersey native dab- bled in ventriloquism. Today, Cop- pe rfield, 44, is known for walking through the Great Wall of China, lev- 1t.atmg a Ferrari, vanishing a seven - ton jet (not to mention the Statue of Liberty), entenng and escaptng the Bermuda Tnangle, levitating across the Grdnd Canyon and. frequently, flymg without the benefit of a plane. Despite years of perfomting on stage~ around the world with his touring magic show, on Broadway and on popular television specials, the intemdtionally renowned illusion- ' 1st sttll hds more to do -more perfor- mances and more new illusions. In fdct, he's so busy, lbat we caught up with lum Vla e-mail for this mterv1ew. Th1s week, the illusionist has been wov.flng locaJ a udiences at the O rdnge County Performing Arts Center with his show, •Global Encounter." Q: I idve you performed at.the Ortlngc County Performing Arts, Center before? A: Yes, many times. It is one of the finest m the nation. People in Orange County should be very proud of 1t! Q: What is your favorite illusion, dnd why? A: I would definitely have to say flying. It has become my signature pl('ce ,wd took me over seven years to create. Q: ls there an illusion you have yet to master? A: l have always wanted to put a woman·~ fate on Mt. Rushmote, &traigbteD.lbe Leaning 1bwer of Pisa and vanish the moon, so I bad better get to workl tam 4l5o d8veloping a very dangerous illusion, which will tr.ave me wall into a fire.filled, blaz- ing blmado and come out alive. Q: How many times have you been asked to reveal your secrets? Have you ever told anyone how you do your illusions? A: More times then I can count! Everyone that works for and those at the venues around the world, they all sign a Msecrecy agreement· and none of these individuals turned out to be the masked magician! Q: With specials showing magic · behind the scenes, such as Fox net- work's masked magician, is it get- ting harder to make audiences believe in illusions? A:. I am fortunate to have the resources to have many methods to do each of my illusions. If someone makes a guess that is in the correct ballpark as to how I perform my magic, I keep the illusion but change the method. So, to. me, the simplistic guesses in these 1V shows and books ttiat aim to expose are like blanks fired from a gun. But there are thousands-Of magi- cians with families who are less for- tunate. They are hard-working entertainers who cannot afford to have multiple methods for their illu- sions. The produOOr's at Pox are putting these people out of work and affecting their famiJJ.es. Q: Who are your magical influ- ences? . A.:. Actually, the influences in my show have come from the arts.out- si~e of magic. Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly -~ose dance greats have had a big lntluence. Also ditectors lite Orson Welles and Francis Ford Coppola have been.an influence. Q: How do you compare what you dO with the illusions once done by · Drive, Costa Mesa. (714) 70S.SSSS. David Copperfield will perform bls magic this weekend at the Center. Harry Houdini? A:. Houdini was much more a great escape artist than a great magi- cian. However, what Houdini was really great at was self-promotion. Q: Are there any acts you will just never do again? A: l stay away from lions and tigers and bears -way too messy! Q: Have you ever had a perfor- mance mishap? A:. A couple of times. Once, in Lake Tahoe. I bad this illusion with a red Ferrari. I }VU levitating it to above mybe4d.. lben. ho.ltway up. it just stopped and came crashing to ~e stage floor. Fortunately, I hadn't gotten under it yet. Unfortunately, it l{U the final Wusion of the evening, to I }\ad nothing to move on to. The ~cl~ and that was it for the nlgbt. Q: Do you still perform dose-up FYI WHAT: David Copperfield's "Global Encounter" WHEN: Noon. 3, 6 and 9 p.m. Saturday WHERE: The Orange County Per- forming Arts Center, 600 Town Center Drive. Costa Mesa COST: $30-SSO CAU: (71 4) 755-0236 magic? A:. Very much so I would sdy my &bow 15 usually an e ven mu between thf! d ose-up magic and the grand illusions. I Uunk the audiences really appreciate a balanced nux. Q: What advice would you give someone who ls interested in magic as a career? A.:. Never give up on your dreams. Never consider anything unposs1ble Doily Pilot BRIEFLY Ill DATE BOOK I Auditions to be held for 'Arsenic' 1nlogy Playhouse will hold auditions for its Adult Theatre Ensemble production of Joseph Kesselring's •Arsenic and Old Lace• from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Dec. 12. In the wake of the board's decision, a group that is the- oretically Newport's close ally has been outspoken in its aitid.sm of the dty. The Airport Working Group, an ad.am.ant support- er of extending Oight caps, hammered the cowidl for its approach to the board. "It's really important that we bring the right parties to the table,• said Barbara Uchman, executive direc- tor of the working group, in a heated address at Tues- day's council meeting. Wtth the next meeting of the Board of Supervisors coming 1n four days, city officials say they are confi- dent their allies can be satis- fied and that the board will approve the cap extensions. Cynthia Coad, the fourth 4istrict supervisor who abstained from the recent boa.rd vote on the cap extension, .said the question of having everyone at the table is audal. •There were more sig- natories [to the original Oight cap agreement) than were included 1n the item on the agenda," Coad said. •1 needed to check out if they had been included:• The original 1985 agree- ment was signed not only by Newport Beach and Orange County officials, but also by representatives of the Airport Working Group and the environ- .. mental group Stop Pollut- ing Our Newport. Coad said she's talked with representatives of the Airport Working Group, and that it put her mind at ease. For its part. Stop Polluting Our Newport representa- tives have saJd they are mn- fkient in the city's approach. l.idmvm also bas raised the coocern that another par- ty is conspicuously a~ from the talks about John Wayne: airline companies, whose business opportunities could be dramatically affect- ed if the caps are extended. ·1 have no doubt that (a cap renewal) will be dlal- lenged • if the airlines are left out of the process, be said The legal questions sur- rowiding the caps are con- voluted. A 1990 federal law makes it virtually impossi- ble for new restrictions to be placed on flights into air- ports. But whether it will also prevent the renewal of John Wayne's existing caps is a matter of debate. Irene Howie, a Washing- ton, D.C., aviation attorney who is also a consultant for the El Toro Reuse Planning Authority, said she believes caps probably can be pushed beyond 2005. But she said the legal waters ·are sufficiently murky that the goodwill of the airlines could make a major difference in the effort's success or failure. •n·s a · lot easier to get that kind of interpretation [allowing the caps to be continued) if there is not a Jot of political controversy arowid it,• she said. For now, Mayor John Noyes said, Newport does not plan to draw in the air- lines. The city plans to a.mend slightly the resolution it will ask the Board of Supervi- sors to approve next week. The new language will include ·all signators to the current John Wayne Air- port settlement agreement, and any other parties to be later designated.• CLtJB CONTINUED FROM 1 with the passage of the llow- growth Greenlight Initiative, similar groundbreakings might become rare. •This may be the last great project of any significance in Newport Beach,• said Stephen Jones, the president of Irvine-based developer Snyder Langston, which will construct the buildings. Roger Cartson DAILV PILOT COSTA MESA -Youth baseball legend Luke Davis, who celebrated his 94th birthday in October, died on Wednesday at his Costa Mesa home, where he had resided the past 70 years. Cause of death is pending because he was alone at the time. One of his three surviving nieces, Westminster's Ernestine Manson, said services and burial would be at Westminster Memorial Park, but no date or time has been established. Originally from Lubbock, Texas, he eventually caipe to HWltington Beach and was the last surviving player from the 1926 SWlset League championship football team at Hunt- ington Beach High, coached by Cap Sheue. Having retired at the early age of 3-' when investments in Union Oil turned to gold, he spent a great deel of his life in and around youth baseball. specifically with Rod Ma.cMillian and Harbor Area Base- ball Association, as a baseball coach. By 1976, while still active with the youth baseball program, the base- ball field at Lions Park was named Luke Davis Field. Countless players and parents were involved with Mr. Davis for some 35 years in the now defunct Harbor Area Baseball Association. Efforts had been made over the years from a loyal following to get him recognition at the Little League Baseball Hall of Fame, but it went for naught because he was never actually involved with Llttle League, which only began in the Newport- Mesa area about 15 years ago. He started by volunteerlng as a helper to MacMillian in 1950 by helping with the then-yearly presea- son football training program for boys in grades 6-9 operated by the Boys Club, in conjunction with New- port Harbor High Coach Al Irwin. ·He assisted by officiating Boys Club fiag football games that fall and then .helped in the spring with the Boys Oub track teams," said MacMillian, who had visited him last week. ·Luke's sister died last Christmas and it took him a long time to come to the door with his walker," said MacMillian. ·1 could see the end was near.· Although his expertise as a youth was football and track, MacMil.lian talked him into baseball as a coach in 1953 and, as MacMillian said, •He picked it up quickly and became a top-notch coach for the next 30-plus years." While his personna was as a base- ball coach, be was very active in many other Boys Club programs. RecaJUng those days, MacMilllan said, •1 never gave Luke a break in team selection. Barry Falulkner DAllY Pit.or CORONA DEL MAR -An early season Back Bay bo~ basketball battle created by scheduling irregu· larlties, twned out to be an anomaly for the ages Thursday at Corona del Mar High. Visiting Newport Harbor, with a cohesive sum- mer, fall and opening game under its belt, came away with a 76-33 victory, by far the largest margin in the 60-game series. Cd.M, with only a handful of practices with its entire 13-player roster (including summer and fall), showed its collective inexperience. Despite the lop- sided loss, Coach Paul Orris believes his Sea Kings can learn plenty from stumbling out of the gate, directly intt> a buzz saw. The biggest previous scoring differential between the neighboring schools was Harbor's 1-'· 40 trtumpb to christen the series in 1964. CdM leads the series, 36-24, but Harbor bas won seven of the last eight, including four straight at CdM. The former Sea View League rivals (CdM moved 11 into the Pacific Coast ThJ.s game League last season) hoped showed us to play in January, as they did last season. But they what we need to couldn't find a matching hole in their schedules, leav- ing the opening week the only alternative. Orris and Newport Har- bor Coach Larry Hirst agreed they will not play this early again. Newport, coming off i1 73-52 thwnping of HWlting- ton Beach Tuesday, had a do to compete with very good teanu. The Tars (2-0) put together strong spurts in each quarter and never tailed. An 8-0 first-quarter run set the tone and a 7-2 second-quarter burst helped open a 32-18 halftime lead. The second half was all Harbor, as the visitors hit 16 of 32 field-goal attempts, while Cd.M connected on only 4 of 21. Newport senior guard Aaron Yarnal drlJJed four three-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points, while 6-foot-6 junior center Tony Melum had nine of his 13 points in the first quarter_,. Jamie Diefenbach, a 6-7 freshman making his second varsity start, had eight of his 10 points in the third quarter. The Sea Kings also committed 16 turnovers, to the Sailors' nine. •This was a step U'p on our behalf,• Hirst said. ·aut, to (the Sea Kings') credit, you could tell they were a step off and a little out of sync.· Said Orris, •This game showed us what we need· to do to compete with very good teams. She scored in the 15th minute on a breakaway to increase Mesa's lead· to 2-0. She then left the game as Coach Dan Johnston substituted other players and kept Day out for more than 15 minutes. When she returned, she struck again less than three minutes after re- entering on another breakaway as she beat everyone to a ball kicked by Katie Roche in the 35th minute. Day again used her turbo speed in the second half as she finished senior Fernanda Velasco's cross (4 lst minute) and the Mustangs went up 4-0. Day then sat out the rest of the game. "It's getting better,· Velasco said of Mesa's play. ·we're talking a lot more on the field.
