Overall, the holiday lights on the house, where the 16-year-old New- port Harbor High School sopho- more lives with his family, resemble thousands of others around the city. Three years ago, Brooks said he began to wonder why no one had ever tried to add lights to palm fronds. ·When you come around the comer, you see some lights at the house and then just this big pole," Brooks said Friday, referring to the lit palm tree trunks. ·vou can't real- ly tell what it is." Brooks raided the closets for wire coat hangers and started to shape them in a way that would allow him to wrap around lights and attach the construction to the leaves. add cross wires for stabilization and wrap the lights around the frame, which looks like a snow shoe. Brooks said some neighbors have expressed an interest in his invention. While he hasn't explored the possibility of marketing his palm frond lighting fixture, he said he'd probably charge $15 a frond. Although he plans to become a pilot or a model maker for the movies when he's done with school, Brooks has already gathered some business experience in the past. ln fifth grade, he sold parachute men made of trash bags and water bottles to his classmates, a shrewd move that soon ended with the principal's disapproval. Many families spent time at the beach to surf, to swim or just to relax. "We live here in Southern Callfor· nia, 1 O minutes from the beach,• said Bruce Franklin, a Costa Mesa resident. "We've got the Pad.fie Oceu right here. We're beginning a new millenni- um, and this is 4ll excellent place to be. Across the country, people a.re in snowstorms with their snow blowers and whatnot, and we're here at the beach. It's a nice place to start the year and to end the last one." Joey Fuschetti, a physical education teacher at Ensign lntennediate School, took his 2-year-old daughter, Katie, to the beach for an hour of play before a family get-together. "She just loves water and the beach, and going to the beach is som ething we do every week as daughter and dad," Fuschetti said. "We're hanging out here because we can. It's the hardest thing for me to go back home when the bea ch is the best place to be. Today I give in to that urge and give advice. The subject? How to smuggle. Some years ago, a group of us toured Europe. On the way back, the plane landed at Ireland's so-calle~Shan non airport, whiah should be called the Shannon Department Store. In this so-called airport, everything Irish can be purchased - Irish linen, Irish lace, Irish cotton, Irish alligator purses. Everything is Irish. ' ' I Co MM Doily Pilot Goy Geiser-Sandoval EDUCATIONALLY SPWING Christmas through the £0Je5 of a child M y friend Kelly is in kinder- garten and can't figure out why someone other than morns and dads of those in kinder- garten would want to go to the holi- day program. But, she said it would be all right if l went to see her and her schoolmates perform. U you have ever been to a kindergarten performance, you know why I was wangling for an invitation. Just watching them get on stage was worth the trip. Many of this group had never been the stars of the show before, and there is some amount of audience gazing to start. In fact, the principal had to instruct the audience not to wave or take pictures until the end, so the students could focus on their teach- ers and the performance. Many moms had spent the month asking for paper, not plastic, but I could not guess that groceries had once been carried in the bright cos- tumes. The upside-down bags trans- formed their wearers into presents, decorated trees, candy canes, toy soldiers and dreldels. The perform- ers didn't just sing. They did all sorts of movements to visually illustrate · the songs they sang. So, as they lift- ed their arms overhead to make a · peaked rooftop, half of their faces were lost to the bag costume. It added to the ambience. The great thing about the kinder- garten group is the various level of singing and motions provided by members of the group. Some have every syllable and hand signal nailed, wblle others spend quite a bit of time staring at their neighbor or checking out the ceiling. The next singing group had dif- ferent costumes and songs to sing. They sported big paper collars and reindeer hats. The hats were con- struction paper headbands with antlers made by tracing the chil- dren's hands. One little girl's hat got lower and lower until just the bot- toms of her eyes were visible. How- ever, she never missed a beat with her motions. Another little boy's hat fell off with one very vigorous motion, so bis retrieval took most of the next song. On~ boy's forte was obviously •we Wish You a Merry Christmas.• He hadn't been singing much before that song. But. I could bear him above the other 45 kids when it came to that song. 1n fact, he sang a half-verse by himseU at the end, before he reallzed the others had stopped. It was not for lack of teacher signals. They sat on c.baiB at the foot of the stage and mimic- ked all of the hand motions that I am sure they spent a lot of time devising. Although it has been 10 yea.rs since I bad a child in kindergarten, lt brought back all of the memories of their performances. And, as if to further empha- size his cumulative worth, the 6- foot-1, 205-pounder even changed offensive positions this fall, but still led the Sailors to the CIF Southern Section Divi- sion VI championship game. Having starred at quartet- back for last year's 13-0-1 CIF Division VI champions, Man- derino shifted to tailback at halftime of t;he second game this year. He then proceeded to assault the school rushing record book. His virtual refusal to be tackled by anything less than a posse of defenders jump-started an oUeose that eventually outscored the Divt- sioo's most prolific scoring machine, top-seeded and previ- ously unbeaten La Mirada, 35-16, in a Dec. 2 semifinal. And while hls workload on offense was enough to force most mortals into the training room to recuperate, Maoderino was also a gargantuan presence on defense as an outside line- backer. Not blessed with overt ath- leticism, toughness and desire became his calling cards. DREAM TEAM . CONTINUED FROM 7 TDs on 93 carries. On defense, Manderino amassed 75 tackles, second on the team. He collected three sacks, two intercep- tions, recovered a fumble and blocked a kick. One interception, as well as his fumble recovery, came in a 49-10 quarterfinal romp over Kennedy, against which be also rushed fo r 200 yards and scored five TDs. Manderino, named the MVP of last year's Daily Pilot AU-Sea View League team, was the league's Offensive MVP this fall. Saenz, being recrulted by Divi- sion I-AA runner-up Montana and a virtual lock to earn repeat All-CIP recognition, led the Tars in tackles for the second straight year. The 6-1. 260-pounder has clean and jerked 325 pounds, which is not only tops in Harbor history, but would surpass the American school-age record, had it been done in competition. Though projected as a defensive lineman in college, Saenz overcame a lack of impressive speed with bursts of quickness that allowed him to explode through ballcarriers. Among his 79 tackles, 64 were first bits and seven were behind the line of scrimmage. He caused three fumbles, recovered three, made three interceptions and had two sac.ks. He shared Sea View Defen- sive Player of the Year laurels this season. Romo, whose season was ham- pered by a nagging knee injury, still managed to propel the Eagles to a school single-season record 312 points. With the 6-2, 185-pounder oper- ating primarily from a wing position, the Eagles averaged 370 yards per contest en route to a 7-4 campaign that ended in the school's first play- off appearance since 1995. The win total has been topped by only four other Estancia teams in 36 varsity sea.sons. Romo rushed 145 Ii.mes for 1,035 yards and 12 TDs, while also finish- ing with a learn-high 27 receptions for 315 yards and two more TDs. He also returned a kickoff for a touch- d~ and intercepted a pass in spot defensive duty. The all-district offense includes quarterbacks Kenny Valbuena (Estancia) and Morgan Craig (New- port Harbor), as well as CdM tail- back Blake Hacker and Newport fullback Travis Trimble. Valbuena, a 6-4, 220-pound senior, capped a three-year varsity career by throwing for 1.371 yards and nine TDs. Benefiting from first- year quarterbacks coach Bill Lux, who starred at Costa Mesa in the late 1970s, Valbuena completed 81 of 148 (nearly 55%) with only three interceptions. He also rushed for 179 yards and two TDs and his scram- bling ability was a catalyst in sec- ond-half comeback wins over PCL rivals Costa Mesa and CdM. Valbuena's career numbers include 2,718 passing yards and 17 m ~asses. Craig, a junior, took over for Manderino under center and made sure Brinkley never regretted the change. He completed 111 of 184 (60%) for 1,308 yards and nine ms, with only five interceptions. His 163 rushing yards, most of which came in the playoffs, included three ms, but his decision making was even more impressive than his stats. Hacker, whose late-season ankle sprain cost him a shot at J .R. Walz's single-season school rushing record (1,578 yards in 1993), finished with 1,401 yards and 10 ms on 240 car- ries. Though only 5-6, 170 pounds, Hacker's strength (he is a league champion wrestler) and detennina- tion helped him produce nearly half the Sea Kings' 2,971 offensive yards. He also caught eight passes for 37 yards. Hacker was most healthy during a five-game midseason ·winning streak, which helped the Sea Kings tum an 0-3 start into a CIF Division IX playoff berth. Trimble's stats (113 yards and two TDs on 21 carries and five receptions for 40 yards and another TD) are hardly eye-popping. But the 6-1, 225-pound fullback was all about popping defenders, as a dev- astating lead blocker for Manderi- no. Newport junior Brian Gaeta the only other two-way Sailor starter besides Manderino, is recognized at receiver, where his 62 catches tied him for fifth on the county list. He· produced 792 yards and scored sev- en TDs, one of which he produced returning one of his team-leading six interceptions at comerback. His 62 receptions rank third on Harbor's single-season list. Estanda senior tight end David Stoddard also proved a noteworthy receiving target He caught 24 pass- es for an impressive 623 yards (near- ly 26 yards per reception, best in the county). Among his six TDs (includ- ing one interception return). were catch-and-run wind.falls of 67, 55, 36, 22 and 20 yards. Newport Harbor blockers com- prise the majority of the all-district offensive line. Top Sailor trench warriors include senior tackle Scott Lopez, junior tackle Robert Chai and junior guard Bryan Breland. Lopez (6·2, 285), transferred from Santa Margarita to help fill vacancies left by the graduation of the entire 1999 front wall. Chai and Breland form a strong nucleus for next year's CIF title run. Rounding out the offensive line, are Costa Mesa senior Antony Gru- bisich, CdM senior Dave Richardson and Estancia senior Cesar Romero. Grublslch, recognized for his work at guard, was an all-dlstnct performer last season at defensive tackle. His experience and power helped the Mustangs roll up 349 yards and nearly 31 points per game. Joining Saenz on the all-district defense, are repeat honorees Nick Prosser, Garrett Troncale and David Rodriguez. Troncale, a senior end from Newport Harbor, battled a nagging ankle injury, but still managed to repeat as the district sack champion with 10. Both quick and strong, the undersized standout (6-1. 185) also stuffed seven running backs for losses. In 25 varsity starts, he amassed 22 sacks. Rodriguez (seven sacks) was also a productive pass rusher at end for the Eagles, while Prosser led the Sea Kings in tackles at outside line- backer. Prosser finished with three sacks and two interceptions. Estancia • senJor Unebacker Fahad Jahid is an easy choice after being named Pacific Coast League Defensive MVP by the circuit's coaches. The 6-2, 235-pound three- year starter, amassed a team-lead- ing 110 tackles( while also rushing for 957 yards and eight TDs on 149 carries at fullback. Senior linebackers Louis Day (Mesa), Andy Rankin (Newport Harbor) and Ivan Garcia (Estancia), are additional selections. .
