the Newport Harbor Pab'ol
Deputies of the three
researchers who were tossed
into the ocean.
WeU, I Called to mention
the name of the dispeldler,
Shiel.a Tubbs, who heard the
solo distri call over chann~
16 on the VHP marine band
radio. Upon hearing the ~
transmission, Tubbs immedi·
ately wrote down and plotted
the lat/long position on her
chart program. With only that
infonnabon, she was able to
d.lrect the deputies to the
location for the rescue, so
kudos, Sb.iela, for your atten-
tiveness and quick response.
ln response to the column,
I received many e·mails con-
cerning the rescue. but a few
stick in my mind.
One reeder said: •1 would
suggest that you add to your
list ol safety tips that boaters
should c:bec:k the marine
weather forecast before setting
out· Excellent pWit and the
Harbor Depertment bas a
weather reccxding at (949) 675-
0503, and on the web is a great
boating sate from NOAA at

blunt and to the point. Part of
that e-mail read: "If the small
craft warning flag IS flying,
do not take your boat out of
the harbor. The.re is a reason
the Hubor Depe.rtrnent flies

trained, but they do not need
to be rescuing stupid people.
People that Uunk this could
not happen to them, only lo
the other guy. The Harbor
Department personnel have
enough to do. They do not
need to baby-sit people who
do not use good judgment
and common sense.·

only the weather forecast.
but also the sea condiUons t1
you're venturing into the
ocean. You must know your
boat' limitations a small,
open-bow boats wW be the
most susceptible to sinking. I

that only get a bumpy ride
during small craft conditions.
In addition to knowmg
what your vessel can safely
handle, you have to know
what you and your guests can

But two players can't carry a team
and the Anteaters learned that the
hard way. falling to the Bengals,
84-76, m overtime.
Whtie Cindy Oparah (28 points)
and Jana Clperova (1 4 points) picked
up the pace for the Anteaters,
accounting for the team's nine pomts
11\ overtune, others were not hitting
the mark.
