What are your goals ID YOW' one-yev term u mayorf My goals are rather simple: to encourage producbve inter- drtlon among the council members and to foster positive commurucabons between the rounoJ and the community. ls working wttb the coun- cil diltlcu.Jt these daysl I think that we each have ow own opuuons, and we're certctutly not shy about sbar- mg them And I Uunk Wlth two new counoJ people who hddn't served m pubhc otbce ~fore. everytiung Just takes tune nus lS a vety canng counoJ. Dec:embw 16, 2001 One play one shot, one chance Big shots are the di.ff erence in UC Irvine's near-miss on the Bruins' floor. M aybe: just maybe ... UC Irvine's Jerry Green could have done things different when he bad the ball and the Anteaters were trailing by a point with less than 30 seconds left during a nonconlerence men's basketball game against UCLA at Pauley Pavilion Saturday. Maybe, just maybe ... He could have passed the ball to a ready and waiting St.anislav Zuzak. Maybe, just maybe ... Green was being just a tad selfish. Or WdS he? · ·Jerry Is not a selfish player.• UCI Cooch Pat Douglass said. "But he tnes to carry the team on bis bade. I hke a k.id that doesn't disappear when tt's on the line. He wants the Amara Aguilar COWGES last shot and if anything he tried too hard, but he made some key buckets for the whole game.· Green dribbled the ball as the precious seconds on the clock tidced away with UCl trailing, 75-74. The moment had finally come. The clutch moment that allows star players to shine. It was what Green bad been wa.iting for. Seconds seemed like an etemJty as UCJ's priJe and joy took the final shot of the game over two UCLA players reaching for the sky. The Dall went wide of the basket and just like that it was over for UCI. One play. one shot, one chance. One player's spUt-second choice. Was it the right one? 'J • tt would have been ruce if that last shot had gone down,· Douglass !>aJd. ·u we are going to have the ball with three seconds to go and Jerry has a chance to4wtn it on a roll. I'll take that any day.· "T'he issue here lsn't that Green .1 didn't make the shot, it's that he wanted the ball. Why shouldn't he? He had already scored a game-high 27 pomts. However, Zuzak was also on a hot scortng streak against UCLA and a case could be made that maybe Green should have passed the ball. Could've? Would've? Should've? Zuzak. a 6-foot-10 sophomore forward, did score a career-high 22 points tn the game. Maybe, Just maybe he would have made the flnal shot to win the game for the Anteaters. He was certainly capable. not to mention open. Green. a seruor as well as last year's Big West Player of the Year, trusted his i.n.stinct.s and be can't be blamed for that. He had confidence in his game. Zuza.k had no regrets on how the last play unraveled. "(Green) took a shot.• Zuzak said. "It was all right. I think it was a shot he can m11ke.
