The number of e-mails, phone calls and visits around town have shown that we have all been wrestling with the fact that one thing that we can count on Ill Ule is change. Several of you expressed that you could relate to what you read. and felt like it wos written just for you. I'm always excited when God works through the col· wnn to help others in any way. How they dif- fer and why will be the topic of discussion at the Jewish Lawyers of Orange County's inaugural meeting on Wedn~ay. Professor Neil H. Cogan, dean of Whittier Law School in Costa Mesa and a respected expert on. both American and Jewish law. will speu on "The Duty to Res- cue Under Jewi.$h Law and American Law.• "I will be talking about the obligation, to assist someone in danger,• Cogan said. "In the United States.' typically, there is no such obligation.• ln Jewish law, there is a duty to aid someone who is in danger or who has suffered grave bodily injury. ln his presentation, Cogan will compare American law, with what he describes as "its strong foundation of individual autono· my.· and Jewish law, which he describes as h~ving ·a signifi- cant foundation ·m community.· ln Jewish law, Cogan explained. "You are actually committing a sin U you do not help someone who is in serious danger.• In terms of Amerlcan law, a person can observe another.in a dire situation - a road accident or a fire - and walk away wtthout legal repercussions. Local attorney Ade Katz described the group as Werks- man, who is also an attorr.ey in the community, envisioned it. "He wanted to aeate a legal affinity group that ·would be an associate with the Jewish Federa- tion. to bring together the Jewish attomeys and judges in Orange County for social interaction and for opportunities to study and to learn together,· he ta.Id. Every year I hear or read story alter story about how quickly New Year's reso- lubons become last week's regrets. I've also heard that the first weeks of January are the busiest weeks of the yeai at gyms because people start out wanbng to make changes. but it isn't long before many of those memberships are nothing more than memories or Identification cards tucked away lll'gym bags. Statutes in the law of Israel, said Cogan, require one to offer -assistance to a person in danger. Statutes also offer protection to the rescuer should something be d9ne in an emergency somehow causing injuries or damages. Nell H. Katz sees Cogan as the per- fect choice as speaker for this kickoff lunch~n. "He is one of One friend told me that she wanted to lose weight but that she would never diet because she knew she'd fall. "How can I succeed at something that bas a name that starts with the word "die?" She said. "I'd be embarrassed to tell you how many sell- help books sit on my shell and how little seU-belp I've ever actually accomplished.· My friend's comments started me thinking about one pos ible reason why so many New Year's resolutions fail. More often ttian not these changes in sell seem to be focused on external change • such as losing weight. gettmg in shape or becoming more organi2ecl. I realized that any time I try to make changes ln myself wtth only my own seU- dlscipllne. nothing l.asts very long. I am not strong enough on my own. 1 need God. So this year, I've decided to try somelhlllg different. This idea occurred to me when I looked up quotes for last week's column on change. 1 think God was trying to get a message to me when I repeatedly found that the word "change• was right between the words "challenge" and "character· in several of my books. I sensed God chollenging me to let him make some change\ in my character. So, instead of a self-help approach, I've decid- ed lo pray for "God-help.· for God's guid- ance and strength. This means 1 need to pray and listen to God more every day. Hopefully, some positive internal changes will lead to some positive external changes as w u. lnsteod of resolutions. based on myself. I'm praying for dodsJons, blessed by God. And you can quote me on that.
