Businesses get
by with little help
from their friends
F or nearly 20 yedrs, the
busmess owners in
BctJboa Villaye on the
peninsula knew the ared
was detenoraling and that 1l
couJd use a reVltali.Zdtion.
Finally, in early 2000, the
Newport Beach City Coun-
ctl undrumously approved
the roughly $8-million pro-
iect thdt will add new Ught-
mg dnd ~ewers and rebuilt
restrooms at the base of the
Balboa Pier. aJong with oth-
er functional and desthetic
tmprovements.
Roudwork is als9 under-
way and isn't expected to
be completed unW May. so
merchants ttlong the penin-
sula have been losing busi-
ness.
But instead of simply
allowing that to continue
happening wlule the pro-
1ect is underway. the city
has stepped in to do what it
can to help.
In December. the city
allowed motonsts to park m
metered spots for free, put
up banners announcing
that the businesses are
indeed still open dnd made
a few other positive
changes. The city now
allows two hours of free
parking between 8 a.m.
dnd 6 p.m. daily. The city
also lifted its prohibition of
left turns from Balboa
Boulevard onto Main
Street.
Yvonne Mithrush, owner
of Mithrush Fashions on the
boulevard, said "They act-
ed really fast, and it helped
a lot."
That type o( tjty
response should make all of
its merchants and residents
proud. It was a great deci-
sion that wUJ do those busi-
ness owners well during
this slowing economy and
thts winter season.
The city even issued
fliers asking the residents
to continue and even
increase their ·patronage of
Balboa merchants whenev -
er possible" lo "help them
through this period of diffi-
cuJty. •
In launching the project,
city officials did what has
been needed for far too
long and. in aiding the
owners duljng this difficult
lime of construction, have
gone the extra mile.
We can only hope the
village's merchants appreci-
ate all the city has done for
them in these last few years
and that they enJOY nothing
but prosperous times
ahead.
Costa Mesa should learn
from Newport's p ast

I'm calling in regard to the boat
parade. l think it's ll shame to cut out
the length of the par!lde because
there are ~o many homes that would
be deniec!Abe beauty of the parade
where it has become a tradition.
There are so few traditions left. I
thmk this is one that brings all of
Newport Beach, and whoever wants
to be there, together.
I do believe, however. that it's
unfair to expect the same boats to be
m the parade every single mght.
They shouJd perhaps scatter the
enbies of the boats throughout the
parade. That way. the boat owners
won't have to be there all night of
lhe parade. I would rather see the
number of days of the parade short-
ened, but still maintain the length of
lhe parade. I think th!lt wquld be
better. having the parade toward the
weekend instead of at the beginning
of the week. Cutting off those few
days might be the answer. I hope it
continues: it's a beautifuJ thing.

was a lack of ovility regarding the
iSsue of housing RVs on the streets of

Havtng hved in the state streets of
Mesa Verde for the past two yean. I
have not.iced many of these very
large vehides scattered throughout
the nclghborhoods and left, m many
cases, to deteriorate and become
unslghUy. I wa.s very plea ed to hear
that the council had issued ci new
rule that the RVs would not be
allowed on tlle tr ts for more lltnc
than it l4kes to clean them.
