piece of history and nostalgia
with young and old alike ·
The classic World War Il planes, part
of the nationwide Wings of Preedom Tour
sponsored by the Collings Foundation,
will be on display at the airport until
Thursday.
As the B-24 landed, Maybay pointed to
it with excitement, asking his buddles to
move closer to the piece of history that he
said brought back many, many memories.
On the last one, his plane was shot down
over Hungary. Brown then spent a yectr
as a prisoner of war in Germany.
"It's the bad food situation that I
remember the most about those day-.,"

D uane Maybay looked up to the
skies, clutc;tting a point-and-
shoot camera in liis right hand.
The sun shined brightly on Mon-
day's warm afternoon, when temperatures
soared to more than 80 degrees at John
Wayne Airport. Maybay Wld several other
World War II veterans awaited the arrival of
two bombers -a B-17 Flying Fortress and
a B-24 Uberator -aircraft that were mean
flying machines in their day.
"It's just nostalgia for those of us who
flew them,· he said. • 1 was in the 45 lst
Bomb Group and flew 35 missions
between 1944 and 1945."
About five years ago, the Hunganan
government sent Brown a piece of the 13-
24 he crash1ed in .
"If not for shows like this, nobody-is
going to know what happe ned and what
we went through,• he said. "Eve rything
so many brave people did would've
been in vain.•
Maybay saw the B-24 two years ago in
Florida and said his daughte r gave him
the gilt o( a ride in the aircraft he had
flown decades ago.
"It was great." he said. "It was emo-
tional. I had tears in my eyes.•
Mike Brown was a B-24 bombardier
and served 34 missions during the war.
Al Olivari was an enlisted bombardier
aboard a B-17 and flew 26 m.is6ions in l Q44.

Cars dragged, people
dragged, all because a bout of
intense heat dragged the day
down with it.
A high-pressure movement
traveling west to east through
Southern California had passed
Newport-Mesa by Monday, but
heated coastal waters left rolls
of hot air that took longer to
move out.
Temperatures at John Wayne
·Airport hit 82 'degrees about 1
p.m ., whkh was too cool to
believe considering how even
the trees in Costa Mesa seemed
ready to pant.
Normal temperatures at th1s
time of year run a much more
bearable 70.
Newport Beach's early after-
noon temperatures were report-
ed to be a mere '66 degrees by
the National Weather Service -
a figure that also didn't feel sui-
ficienUy hot.
Stan Wasowski, a forecaster
for National Weather Service in
San Diego, seemed surprised at
how the temperature on Mon-
day in Costa Mesa saw a one-
degree rise from the sa1t1e time
on what had been an unbear-
ably hot Sunday.
•For some reason, they
jumped up," he said. "[Sunday)
was hotter. High pressure was
right over us then. It's already
done for Costa Mesa, and now
we're waiting for the rest of the
sea breeze to kick ln."
A high-pressure movement
usually takes along hot weather
as it moves, but Monday's situa-
tion was probably a result· of
Sunday's pre-summer tantrum.
"Must be that there was
some warm air out over the
waler, just west of Newport,•
Wasowski said.
Tempe ratures are expected to
cool today.

NEWPORT BEACH -For the first
time since the Sept. 11 terronst attacks,
passenger traffic at John Wayne Airport
has shown an mcredse over last yea.r -
a s1gru hcant turrung point for the local
economy.
Apnl saw a 5.6% increase m passen-
ger traffic over April 2001: 657,598 pas-
sengers came through John Wayne last
month, compared with 622,694 in Apnl
2001.
Though March 2002 also showed a
steady nse over recent months, there
was still a 1.2% decline in passengers
compared with the March before.
"Our passengers are increaBing
monthly,• said Ann McCarley, a spokes-
woman for John Wayne Airport. •Every
month is getting better.·
McCarley said John Wayne Airport's
high proportion of business travelers
continues to lead the recovery.

whether to accept grant funds
for the HOPE School Readiness
Pilot program and the School

agreement in December.
The grant will enhance the
state preschool program at
Whittier Elementary School by
funding the position of director
or early childhood education,
proVlde parenting classes and
health services to preschool
children, and establishing the
HOPE Readiness Resource
Center for teachers and parents
to access curriculum, ma terial
and other information.
The grant will also provide
preschool servtces for an addi-
tional 48 children at Wilson
Eleme'ntary School.
The board will also consider
some English, math and for-
eign language textbooks for
approval.

it's encouraged if it means that you
are standing up for your beliefs.
The class tackles provocative
issues, such as prejudice against
African Americans and homosexu-
als, in a discussion-oriented setting.
LaMer challenges students to
try to see the world as others do to
reduce the likelihood of prejudice.
·1 think the class is more impor-
tant now than 10 years ago,• LaMer
said. ·1 think prejudice and intoler-
ance have gone underground
because of political correctness.•

weeks of class exploring their
world views, so they become
aware of how they see the world
differently than others do.
As the class shifts to discussing

On a recent Friday morning,
students engaged in a heated
debate about Christianity and
homosexuality. The students have
become so comfortable with each
other that one student admitted bis
homosexuality and apologized to
another student for lying about it
earlier in the semester.
When another student, Isaac
Bailey, made a commen t that
homosexuals lead sinful lives,
LaMer was instantly in his face.
"Are you God?" she shouted,
stressing the importance of qualify-
ing opinions as beliefs, not fact.
"If you say it's truth when some·
one else doesn't believe, then
you're making a judgment,•
LaMer said.

LaMer's class has a positive effect
on other people.
"She makes us think and see
things differ~ntly, so when she
sends us into the world, we tell our

LaMer said her ultimate hope is
that students become "social war-
riors• -not just being against
prejudice, but working to erase it.

with Coastal Resources

environmentally sensitive
areas that serve as habitat

council approves the con-
tract. Coastal Resources
Management will conduct
a thorough study of these
sensitive areas -Identify-
ing where they exist.
assessing potential threats
and proposing ways to pro-
tect them In concert with
the proposed Local Coastal
Program. The work must
be done in t ime for the city
to submit an application to
the californla Coastal Com-
mission by June 30, 2003.
The Information w ill also
be used to help guide the
general plan update that is
underway.
Cln Oil FIELDS
Two Items on tonight's
agenda pertain to the city's
16 oil and gas wells In
West Newport. The f irst
will consider whether to
extend the contract with
Sampson 011 Co., the com-
pany that has operatt'd the
city oll and gas production
facllltles since 1984.
Council members wlll
also consider whether to
Increase the fees It pays to
the company that disposes
of waste water from the
production facilities. West
Newport 011 Co. has been
dlspostng of waste water
from the operations since
1994 by discharging Into
the company's well injec·
tlon system. The city has
been paying 1 O cents a
barrel for this service,
totaling about $40,000 or
$45,000 a year.
This year, however, the
d ty stopped sending waste
water into the company's
system and Instead now
sends It to the city's recent·
ly installed injection system.
In the future, the only time
the water will be handled
by the company is when
the city's systems are shut
down for maintenance or
repair. For thls reason, the
company has requested
that the city double its per-
barrel fee to 20 cents.
What to expect: If the
council approves that con-
tract with Sampson, that
company '¥ill continue
operating 'the fields for
another five years, with a
5% Increase in the monthly
service fee It pays tl\e city,
raising that amount to
SS,040. Council members
may likely take into consid-
eration the fact that since
the company has been
operating the production
f acilltles, there have been
no mechanical failures or
spills that required emer-
gency response.
The city's Oil and Gas
Field Operations Commit-
tee supports the request of
West Newport Oil to raise
its per-barrel fee, and
council members.might
well agree.

vened for what they call liv-
ing-room dialogue, dis-
cussing their responses to
the terrorist attacks and how
they can increase under-
standing in the community
among various cultures.

Oialogues in Orange
County are not a novel idea.
The Los Angeles riots in
1992 provided the catalyst
for the first group. The cur-
rent discussion groups were
planned to ease tensions ·
after the terrorist attacks,
when 69 hate crimes were
reported against Muslims
and Arabs in Orange Coun-
ty durlng the month of Sep-

Wayne Airport experienced a huge drop in pas-
senger counts immediately after the East Coast
terrorist attacks. In September 2001, the num-
ber of passengers plummeted 33%, to 403,467,
from the September 2000 count of 604,019.
Since that time, the drop off in passengers
has been slowly improving, but last month
was the first time growth was evident.
The latest news doesn't mean that air travel at
the airport is as it was. On the contrary, airline
officials are still recommending that passengers
arrive at least two hows before their Oights.
McCarley said·this will allow time for parking,
check in and security checks.
"We've had some issues recently where
people didn't allow enough time, and they
missed their flights,• McCarley said. "Two
hours is still the recommended lead time,
especially In the mornings and especially on
Monttay morning, which is our busiest time.·

I am writing to express my concerns
and opposition regarding the pro-
posed joint-use Mariners Library
("Mariners Branch Library concerns go
online," May 10).
lam a parent of two cluldren who cur-
rently attend Mariners Elementary
School. We think our school is excellent
and we are strong supporters. The follow-
ing comments outline several of the many
reasons that I do not Uunk a 1oint-use ele-
mentary schooVpublic library should be
built in our community.
I believe that a librarian dedicated to
the specific needs of the cluldren, cunicu-
lum and teachers at Manners is superior
to'SeVeral librarians that must serve the
n~ of the general publlc. The collec-
tion of books in the publlc llbrary would
not exclusively be for the use of Mariners
students. Materials for reports and pro-
jects would be subject to Jen.ding for any-
one who requests them.
In my opinion, the school would be
served better by spending a much smaller
amount of money to update the collection
of the existing Mariners school. lf only a
small portion of the million dollars currently
being solicited were used to update aJJ the
libraries in the school disbict. the money
would be put to much more effective use.
I support continued separation of the
Mariners Public Library and the Mariners
Elementary School llbrary. The current
school library is housed m a very nice
portable classroom l do not think a larger
area is necessary for the school. The exist-
ing public Manners llbrary could do with
some updating. but I use 1t frequently and
am very satisfied Wlth it.
l do not think that the proposed JOint-
use library will provide safety and security
equivalent to the existing school library. J
absolutely do not llke or feel comfortable
with the idea that the stlloolchildren visit-
ing the library for school purposes during
the day could mix with the the general
public. As the proposed library would be
a facility open to the public, I do not see
how this mixing could be prevented. It is
hard enough to maintain a secure and
sale campus at the school without adding
another entry point for strangers.
I do not want my children using or
having access to computers that do not
have sbict Internet filters for material such
as pornography and hate sites. 11lese sites
are not suitable for my children. If my
child does use a nonfiltered computer, I
need to be physically present so that I can
exercise parental judgment on Web sites.
Currently, the public library does not filter
Internet access and I do not expect they
will any time soon. It is too much of a bur-
den on teachers to attend to this responsi-
bility with a large class.
There is no spec.he successful example
ol a joint-use library involving an elemen-
tary school. Leaders in the field of library
and information services have not sup-
ported joint-use facilities with elementary
schools. In fact, most of them don't sup-
port joint-use libraries.
I do not want my children to be
guinea pigs in this ill-fated experiment.
Just because a project has the ability to
be funded with Proposition 14 dollars, it
does not necessarily follow that the pro-
ject is a good one.
J urge the community to reconsider any
support for the Mariners joint-use library
project.

The Force is strong with oncoming summer •
T he days are getting
longer and the weather
is getting warmer, which
should be enough to convince
anyone that summer is well on
·its way. However, there are
other signs of this seasonal
phenomenon that can be found
almost everywhere. In schools,
the Advanced Placement
exams are well on their way
and final projects are being
quickly anticipated.
All around Newport Beach,
tourists from anywhere inland
to across the country have
begun to spring up, causing
increasing traffic and crowds.
And, most importantly. the
extremely eager fans awfilting
the premiere of •Star Wars
Episode II: Attack of the
Clones" have begun their
camp-out in front of Big New-
port.
While some of these exam-
ples may seem less important
than others, they are all very
similar in the way that they
contribute to make the summer
both official and diiferent.

There is little doubt that the
summer is most well-known for
being the standard three-month
vacation for students of all lev-
els. With less than one quarter's
worth of academic study left ih
the 2001-02 school year. stu-
dents of all ages begin the rest-
less, yet enthusiastic countdown
until late June. For many high
school scholars, the last few
weeks have been a frenzied
mess of last-minute Advanced
Placement study sessions, as
the exams are to be completed
at the end of this week.
The end of those exams
result in a brief amount of free
time, which ends all too quickly,
transforming into a period ol
anxiety concemlng finals and,
for seniors, the dreaded senior
project.
While aJJ ot these require-
ments and demands remain
stressful, students are aware
that their mere existence indi-
cates the introduction of the
school year's e nd. The mental
picture of summer vacation •
proves to be a strong motivat-
ing force m students' final
attempts to remain academical·
ly focused.
Southern California is
known for its massive popula-
tion and gruesome traffic con-
ditions. The Newport Beach
area is no differe nt and due to
the desirable locabon. tourism
has remained a mdJOr source of
income as well as somewhat of
a summer tradition. Whtle it
seems that crowds, long waits,
and rush hour traffic are year-
long problems, the summer-
time seems to make each of
them greater and more
unbearable ..

the CIP Southern Section Division
IV boys volleyball playoff1, the
third-place team from the Pacific Coast
League barged through the back door
Prlday to assume the postsµson path of
the No. 3 seed.
CdM, which by virtue of appearances in
its' division's section title match each of the
previous five seasons has reclaimed its status
as a perennial power in the sport, was pitted
against No. 3-seeded Ocean View in the first
round of the playoffs.
But Ocean View, which shared the Golden
West League title for the second straight year
and advanced to the Division IV quarterfinals
last spring, held the seed in name only.
In the practice some refer to as back-door
seeding, and a reality not lost on Ocean View
Coach.Jimmy Harris, the CIP playoff pairings
committee recognized CdM's prowess, as well
as the strength of the PCL, by allowing Coach
Steve Conti's squad to claim the No. 3 seed if
it could defeat the Seahawks on the road.
· And while that victory was anything but
routine-a 15-6, 13-15, 1-15, 16-1', 15-8
struggle that lasted more than two houn -
the Sea Kings should now benefit from the
back-door seeding, beginning with a home
match tonight against ·
