fact has a spedal Newport Beech
twist. Hotels surely fill with two-
week vacationers here to enjoy the
city's natural assets. But it's the long-
term. d.le-hard summer lovers who
transfonn the town.
Historically, the city's population
swells by about a third es apartments
on the water and throughout the
peninsula and other areas fill up with
fun lovers. In 2000, the most recent
year for whlch figures were avail-
able, the aty's 75,627 populabon
grew by more than 26,000.

part of the Padfic, and we'll
see this year lf a young gray
whale decides to alter course
to enter Newport Harbor. I
have bad some of my best
whal watdung expenences
inside the harbor. Remember
whal are warmblooded, air-
breathmg mammals that swim
m a pod, not a school. so do
not call them. ouch. fish.
The gray whales are the
most abundant pedes you
will off our coast. but you
might be lucky enough lO spot
orcas, too. Everyone hould
take a boat bip out to see the
whales oo their migrating
· route, but remember there are
regulations to protect the
whales from over-excited or
disrespectful boaters.
The federal agency respon-
sible for proCedlng gray
whales Is the National Marine
Fisheries Service. which falls
under the 1972 Marine Mam·
mal Protection Act. The regu-
lations are necessary to pro-
tect the whales from harass-
ment, and for safo, non-dis-
ruptive whale watdung. I
hope every boater follows the
genenil rules. You can report
someone you sea blatantly
disregardmg the regulations. When~ whales
witbin 100 yards, boaters
should not operate at &peeds
faster than a whale or group
of whales, and boaters should
rrwntain a constant 5peed
whl.le paralleling or following
whales within too yards. Also,
boaters should do nothing to
cause a whale to change
direction. In addition. for those
airaa.ft pilots, you cannot Oy
lower than t,000 fi t when

Car accident kills
Newport woman
A Newport Beach woman was
killed Saturday when the car he was
a passenger in collided with another
vehicle in the intersection of
MacArthur Boulevard and Jamboree
Road in IMne. lrvme police sa.ki.
Mae Peterson, 79. was pro·
nounced dead at the scene from
uijwies sustained dunng the colli·
sion, said Cullen Ellingburgh,
supervwng deputy coroner.
She was was the passenger m a
1987 Chevrolet Celebnty driven by
92-year-old Newport Beach resident
