next month, voters are expected to
have one big topic on theu nuncls -
the fate ol the El Toro Manne Corps
A.Jr Statioo.
Three weeks Crom now, county
voters will decide whether they pre-
fer a central park or an airport at the
closed bese by approving or deny-
ing Measure W.
The South County-mounted Im·
tiative would change the zorung at
the 4,700-acre base from aviation to
open space to allow Orange County
to create what promoters say could
potentially be the greatest park in
the United States and put a huge
crimp 10 any plans to bwld an air·
port there.
The election. to be held Marcb 5.
will be the fourth referendum in the
coooty's nearly nme-year effort to
build an airport df the base. Th.ree

The Muriel was built by Hay dlld
Wright at Alameda m 1895. She was
162 feet long with a beam. or width.
of 36 feet, 8 i.nches. She had a depth
of 1 1 feet. 8 mches
Muriel was owned by Hind and
Rolph and Co. of San FranQS("(), where
Muriel was reglSt.ered and home port-
ed. Most ol her career was m the Paafic
tumber trade coestwlse -MuneJ could
well have delivered lumber from Qre..
gon to OUT Newport Pier The lumber
was oftloeded onto railroad ca.rs. which
were pushed out on the pJer Steam
locomotlves then took the &ooded rail-
road cars to Santa Ana for distnbubon.

replaced by steam schooners about

sailed her to Newport Harbor

Muriel was being towed out to her
summer ancborag . Suddenly. th<'

well as a fire. My father and I followed
m our trusty oJd Dodge towing cer.
Muriel WM being pulled by a
motorized freight barge rather than a
proper tugboat, and they were tow·
ing with a short towline. As they got
to the head of the narrow entrance
channel. a huge ground swell
humped up and the tow line parted.
The motorized tow coWd not get
another line on Muriel. She drifted
over to the Corona de1 Mar sand bar.
fetdung up at an angle to the main
channel. Attempts to pull her otf failed.
The g round swells broke against
her port bow.
Due to the changing currents at
the harbor entrance, Muriel caused
the Corona del Mar bar to increase
in m e o;o that at low tide, people
couJd walk out to the sb.lpwreck and
chmb on board. nus proved to be a big summer
attracuon. My father and I donned
bathmg suits -bathing trunks were
illegal at that urne -and at low tide
waded out lo Muriel We boarded
with the help of a rope that was
hanging down from the boat landing
platform. which had been built and
attached to the starboard Ide.
Vandals bad broken the g ky·
Light in the after cabin. Being bare
footed, we bad to be careful. Mr.
father was not a good swunmer, 'JVwas•
7 years old. The bde was conung tn -
so we did not stay on board very ~.
Dunng a heavy southeast storm in
the winter of 1926. Mwiel wu bloWn
off the Corona del Mar sand bar. Sail·
mg with •bar poles• (four muts) with
no one on boeJd, she moved Kn*
the channel heading back lnto the
harbor. She fetched up on the Ba1boe
Penlnsula sand bar about SO ~.aft
the wooden bu.lkbead in froot of
what ls now 2290 Channel Roed.
At about this time. a Capt. Eli8al
8'1.ab&hed saNage rights and mot~
ceslon ol Muriel. He and bis -.odete
took up resadence ln tbe after cabin.
The plan was to pump her OUl end
refloet the ship. A gllllOline ~
cenbilugal pump was placed on deck.
Oki.tasbkloed bard hat dMng equip-

plug up the boles. The four masts were
cut off at the deck and removed
Due to the sbUting currents at the
harbor entrance. the presence of the
Muriel again caused a sand bar to
build up between the bulk.head arid
the Muriel so you could walk out to
the ship on dry sand.
My father and I visited the Mwiel
one S\mday afternoon.. We easily
d1mbed aboard and watched EJimloo
-dressed in bard hat diving gear -
go down a steel ladder tnsida tbe bull
to patch up lea.ks. He came beck up
and modaned to his astistant. wbo was
~ting the hand-driven air com·
pressor, to cut a piece ot CUMll 10 111.e.

One feOow told me that ooe day be was
on board at low tide wbeD tbe pump
was pumping waler into the bold ot

Finally tn 1930, tbe sand bu
around Munel was dredged away.
But Muriel would not move because
she was full of water. So a contract
was awarded to E.M. Burris, who
conducted a general trucking busi·
ness. and Sam Talbert. a house
mover. lo remove tbe unsightly bulk.
,11 They saturated the wood with
~ ttove oil and burned her to the
waterline. Dynamite was used to
break the hull apart. An okl tub·
ioned hou.se·moving capllD (• witi·
cal drum) was placed on lbMe and
attaChed to suitable •dead men•
(logs buried in the sand).
