year-oJd Newport Beach resident
on charges of posses5ing cbtld
pornography and a pipe bomb,
offloals said.
Bruce Knight Cleworth was
indicted after New-PUIUC port Beach police SAFETY searched his home
Dec. 18 and found
several images of child pornogra-
phy -all printed versions stored

Richard Lee. spokesman for the
U.S. attorney's olface.
Cleworth was anaigned Jan. 3
on the charge of possessing a pipe
bomb, to which he pleaded not

tive heart failure at about 4
p.m.. helped create Bugs
Bunny, Daffy Duck, the Grinch
and a bevy of other memorable
characters.
The animator had been
using a wheelchair over the
last several weeks.
"The work that he bas done
has Werally touched hundreds
ClmckJODll
ol millions," said Craig Kausen.
the animator's grandson. "It
certainly is a tragic loss for
everybody wbo knew him. But
his work can be viewed for
yea.rs to come.•
Jones' drawing career
began when be was hJred by
former Disney animator
Ub lwerlc.s in the early 1930s.
He later worked for Leon
SchleliDger' Stut:b. whidl was
sold to WlmllJf Bros. ln 1936.

Jones flourished at the
Burbank studio iD the 1940s.

tinct style and humor.
Jones was living in Corona
del Mar with wife, Marian,
when be died. He moved to
Newport Beach in the early
19801, when he married
Marian, his second wife.
He cxmtinued to work. in Los
Angeles, but loved his Orange
County home, Kausen said.

loved to have a view."
Jones' Corona del Mar
home was known for its expan-
sive ocean view.
Jones also opened a store
in Laguna Beach, wberemem·
orabWa from his cartoons is
sold.
He is survived by three chil-
dren, six grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.
A private service for the
family will be held in the next
week. Kausen said. A public
memorial is being planned in
Newport Beach in the next sev-
eral weeks.

armed gunman stormed into a
bank Saturday afternoon and
made off with a sizable amount
of money, police said.
The man burst into the
Umoo Bank of California at
about 1 :JO p.m .. brandishing

The man was wearing a
black ski mask, dark-colored
nylon jacket and red sweat
pants. He stands about 5 feet 6
and weighs about 140 pounds,

Jack.son said. He is thought to
be in his late 20s
After entering the bank. the
man grabbed a female cus-
tomer and held the black pis-
tol to her head. He pulled out
a bag and ordered the tellers to
stuff it with ca.sh. Jackson said

May Kwan Turek, 44,
accepted a plea bargain from
the Orange County District
Attorney's office in the case.
Turek, a former flight atten-
dant, will serve eight years of
a 16-year sentence.
Turek admitted to killing
Roxanne Martin, 30, at the
Costa Mesa home of Anthony

Just the right
moves to avoid
a black eye
I t will be a shame lf what
appears to be a minor mis-
take on the part of Newport
Beach ends up damaging
its hard-earned reputation
as an environmentally conscious
o ty. But revelations this month
that the city for t 2 yea.rs sent
sewer debns -consisb.ng mainly
of sand, egg heUs and raw
sewage -to a landlW in Irvine
may do j~t that.
Fortunately, city officials have
qwckJy acknowledged that mis-
takes were made. They have
stopped the practice and are
loola.ng i.nto how It was allowed
to happen. That lnvestigation
mcludes a hard look within the
walls of City Hall, which is never
an easy undertalcing to begin
because there always is the
chance that someone will deserve
purushment.
But those steps are exactly the
ones needed to keep this mddent
from turning into a black eye that
can permanenUy damage the
city's standing with environmen-
lAllst.s, other d bes and various
governme nt agenoes.
Newport Beach, to put 1t sun-
ply, needs to have the authonty to
press for changes to laws to safe-
guard its waten and to keep
changes from occurrlng that will
endanger the Back Bay, the har-
bor or the beaches. City officiab
have worked hard to gain that
authorlty -their relatively con-
genial relationship with local
envtronmentallsts demonstrates
that It is a reUef to see that they
are working as hard to keep ll.
It appears, from preliminary
tests on the landfill, that no seri-
ous contamination occurred
there. That as the most important
development to note, and it likely
will help keep this m from get-
bng worse.
But that ln no way meam the
city should move on to another
l5$Ue. The steps already taken
need to be carried to their end,
especially answering the ques-
tion: Was the dumping an inno-
cent oversight. The dty also
should not hesitate -and there
is no reason to think it will -to
take care of the damage, whatev-
er it turns out to be.
All that needs to be done
because it ls that important that
no serious contamination occur
to Newport Beach's •green·
credentials.

that alleged breach of contract
against the Newport Beach
CountJy Club, a subsidiary of the
company that al.lo owns the Bay
Club, based on the negotiations
with Popejoy.
Combined. lbele suits had all
the ingredients of a made-for· TV
movie involving the rich and
famous wbo haunt Newport
Beach. But after the two-year run
of bickering, both sides than.JduJ-
ly altered c:oune and relieved us
of beanng any more than we
already have.
