Beach had water temperatures
at about 67 degrees,• he said.
"We expect it to climb to the 70s

Raul Camacho Dorado, 26, and Anto-
ruo Alejandro Deltoro, 28, both of Santa
Ana, and Angel Uriostegui, 29, of Irvine
were arrested on suspicion of attempted
robbery at ntfany and Co. the night of
May 8, 2001. said Costa Mesa Police Lt.
Dale Birney.
The arrests Wednesday were a result of
a yearlong investigation that led detec·
llves to Uriostegui, who was employed as
a security guard at the jewelry store at the
time of the mcdent, he said. He, however,

McDonald erupts emobonally and

For chapter book readers, Lee Kochender-
fer takes a snapshot of World War 11 Ameri-
cana in "'Jbe Victory Garden." As her broth-
er's flying a fighter plane overseas, 11-year-
old Teresa rallies classmates to tend a nelgh·
bor's garden, sells produce to support the
war effort and befriends the class bully.
While the approach is sentimental, fourth-
through sixth-graders will applaud a preteen
who unites people in a time of crisis.
Her youth and versatility, not to men-
tion her beauty, added Center spokes-
woman Angela Dickson, make her accom-
plishments even more stunning.

about the side of my voice that I didn't
know existed, the operatic side.·

to know motherhood. With a 16-month old
who's already changed her life in "phe-

experiencing a level of happiness she nev-
er knew before.
With three Tonys and an Emmy norru-
nation -for her performance in the role of
Susie Monihan in HBO's "Wit• -McDon-
ald said her goals are the same as they
have always been.
McDonald started her musical career as
a child -she was 6 or 7 -when doctors
diagnosed her as very hyperactive and
emotional. "To cultivate and improve the gifts I've
been given,· she said. "To continue to
move forward.•

speech by novelist Anna Quinlan.
"Don't take it for granled. •
Fry, who wrapped up her first
year as the school's principal, spoke
toward the end of a fairly brisk
graduation ceremony that ran with
docklike efficiency.
Almost before all the parents·
and guests were seated, Elgar's
processional march rose in volume
from the speakers. The 276 gradu-
ates, from the class of 2002, filed
across the stage of the school's
quad area.

Chris Carpenter and Ben Inouye
and two underclass students har-
monized an a cappella rendition of
the national anthem.
A string of speakers, including
graduates and school officials,
emphasized the event's transitional
nature for the teenagers, some of
whom will head to colleges and
universities. while others will enter
the working world.
Mark Pomerantz, a graduate,
advised his peers to "develop the
internal initiative" to succeed.
Graduate Laura Lyon. who also
spoke, said the past year was a
time when the teens matured most.
"College aspirations weren't the
only motivation for our activities,"
Lyon said. "It was at this time that
our personalities stood out in our
peer group.·
She picked three adjectives,
which she said described the class
-·unique, considerate and ... lib-

Costa Mesa High seniors strut their stuff and enjoy
themselves as they bid farewell on graduation day

T he shoe of choice was
black flip-flops.
Not with 5-inch rubber
heels, not with little
daisies everywhere, but the kind
you might wear while washing
the car on a weekend afternoon.
They peeked out from below
flowing green robes and far out-
numbered the wooden clogs,
baby blue platfonns, florescent
red sneakers and conservative
black loafers worn on this once-
in -a-Wetime night.
The wearers of these shoes
were milling about in what was
Ordnge Coast College's back-
stage Mea for Costa Mesa High
School's graduation Thursday
evening in the college's LeBard
Stadium. Like their shoes, the
seniors oozed personality in oth-
er places where the robes
allowed for small touches of fun.
Some wore medals dotted
with World Senes pms, Olympics
brooches and other nonacademic
symbols m hopes that parents sit-
ting far away would thmk they
were gradudtmg with some great
honor. Others did spontaneous
htUe dances. blumng the straight
Imes everyone was supposed to
stand in. '
Michael Gardiner, a valedicto-
ry scholar, stepped out of line to
pracuce the Bezerker Walk from
lhe movie "Clerks" with fnends
who are also fans of the flick.
When asked if he was planning
to walk mto the stadium like
that, Gardiner suddenly became
modest.

year-old said.
In the stands, parents and
Criends holding flowers waited.
So did honored guests from the
Newport-Mesa Unified School
District Board of Education,
including Dana Black, David
Brooks, Jim Ferryman, Martha
Fluor and Judy Franco, as well
, as Assistant Supt. of Secondary
Education Jaime Castellanos.
The Costa Mesa High School
1>and watched for its cue to start
playing "Pomp and Circum-
stance,• which some graduating
seniors would later use to cart-
wheel their way onto the field or
walk arm in arm.
The school's Madrigai Choir
also waited on the freshly mowed
greens. Their big number would
be the national anthem, which
would later send a collective chill
through the crowd.
Up in the fenced-off waiting
area. emotions were having a
ripple effect.
"I am just so sad,• said Kevin
Alexander. meaning to be dra-
matic. "I love high school so
much because it's so easy.•
The 17-year-old continued
lamenting about entering the
real world, about becoming an
adult. I
Just seconds before the first
line of 729 to-be-graduates would
wa.Hvt6 the field, Kevin's fnend
Gardiner mused that he was also
sad, but in a nostalgic way.
•I feel like that's what this cer-
emony will be like," he said. "A
celebration of the time we've
spent here."

Bay high schools celebrated their
independent spirit and persever-
ance at graduation on Thursday
morning.
The Costa Mesa schools serve a pop-
ulation that struggles at traditional high
schools or craves the opportunity to
work at its own pace.
Ninety-eight students wearing
vibrant red caps and gowns ~ssed their

applause and cheers.

The graduation also included a n
emotional farewell to the founding prin-
cipal of the school, Carole Castaldo,
who is retiring after 26 years at the
helm.
Castdldo was teary-eyed after the
ceremony and expressed the bittersweet
feelings of the occasion.
"It's a mixed feeling." Castaldo said.
·I know I have to leave it to others, but
it's my baby.·
After the ceremony, students
embraced family and friends, posed for
snap<ihots and chowed down cake .
Shannon Smith, 18, said going to
Monte Vista turned out to be a blessing
after !>he WdS i:1j ured in a car accident
and had to ta ke a chunk of time off from
her previous h1gh school.
"I got to complete everything and
recover,• said Snuth, who scored a com-
bined $3,500 from three scholarships.
Her mom, Shawn, looked on proudly
as Smith revPled 1n the post-graduation
festivillei:..
"She did weU !>ince she came out
with a 4.0 (grade-point average),"
Shawn said. "She's independent dnd
resourceful. Between the two, she Cdme
out with flying colors.•
Although Cldudia Guerra, 17, went to
Monte Vista for one i:.emester, but she
said 1t was more productive than her ,_

dent," she said. ·school wasn't much
help, and I thought it was a waste of a
day.•
For Alberto Vasquez, 19, Monte Vista
provided a clear focus that was lacking
at his old school.
"It was more one-on-one with teach-
ers, easier to get answers to all my
questions, and I worked at my own
pace," he said.
While Vasquez said high school was
a long journey. he looks forward to col-
lege and continuing to play bass with
the band Driven.
"Now he can go on tour with us with·
out having his parents hate us,• 1oked
