Boating is the No. 1 way to spend quality family time, according to a . national survey conducted m May by the Recreational Boat- ing and Fishing Foundation .. A swprising 35% of Amen- can adults responded that boating and fishing top the list and are followed by: playing team sports at 21 %; watching television at 18%; going to the movies at 16%; and playing computer games at 4 %. Of those surveyed, 90% believe that their stress level is reduced and 87% feel a very positive effect on family relationships by boating and fishing. The survey asked adults nationwide what leisure activity is the best way to spend quality family time. The survey shows that people are participating in outdoor activities and that people love to be close to nature. Boating and fishing outranked other sports such as goll and tennis, and it is estimated that more than half of the respondents had been boating in the last two years. I think that boating in general is coming out of ado- lescence, shedding the old beliefs that you must leave all the comforts of home at the docks and only the very wealthy can afford a boat with yacht club membership. The boat designers have for years ignored women and comfort, unlike the home designers who have for years designed for comfort and the one in the family with the veto pow~r. Luxury. homelike furnish- ings -without breaking the piggy bank -are very apparent in the new boat models that have something to appeal to everyone in the family with satellite 1V to the microwave to the fishing cockpit. The trend for years has been shifting from sail- boats to powerboats because of the luxury afforded by the layout of most powerboats. However, the sailing industry has made remark- able strides to reverse the trend with well-appointed vessels and the decrease in the labor of love of recre- ational sailing. High-tech.is reaching into the yachts, too, with Cat 5 computer network cabling now replacing the standard cabling, allowing an easier interlacing of electronics. Internet and e-mail access speeds are becorrung more popular as access prices come down and the uplink speeds increase. This allows you to stay in touch with the world or work as you cruise the coast- line, vtondering what lies ahead at your next anchorage. Our harbors have seen the impact of the popularity of boat ownership as the supply and demand have increased slip rental prices to an all- time high. ' ' Daily Pilot COSTA MESA CITY COUNCIL PREVIEW On The AGENDA SOllR·llVING CERTIFICATION The City Council will consider adding one more weapon In its limited arsenal against some prob· lematic sober-living homes tonight as council members review a coun- ty program designed to monitor the clean-living environments. The county certification pro· gram -four years In the making -was developed by a multi-Juris· tictional task force In hopes that It will help officials more closely monitor sober-living facilities. The Board of Supervisors approved the Orange County Adult A lcohol and Drug Sober Liv- ing Facilit ies Certification Process in December and It is scheduled to take place In October, officials said. Some of the recommended guidelines outlined In the county's program Include specific require- ments regarding staff, admission, intake, building and grounds, monitoring, review and a "good neighbor" policy. The Costa Mesa Planning Com· mission wholeheartedly endorsed the guidelines, saying the program would benefit everyone involved. The enVironmental report includes computer-generat- ed images of what the tem- ple will look like from 15 dif- ferent vantage points near- by. Any neighbors who want to know how much of their ·View will be dominated by the steeple needs only to flip through th.e report to see images projected for the immediate future and 10 years from now, when trees will further obscure the spire. . The images came from photos that were taken when a crane was was parked on the site to show neighbors bow tall the steeple would be. Surveyors took pictures of the crane from surrounding neighbor- hoods. Then, using comput- ers, they inserted an image of the temple. The consultants also looked closely at the lights on the building, the traffic it would generate, the effects of the building on air and water quality, property val- ues and some other factors. Their contlusion: • ... the pro- posed project will not result in significant impacts. w A closely watched ending In fact, as church planners have emphasized, the pro- ject also will bring some benefits. Gardens on the 8 1/2-acre site will include a waterfall and benches and will be open to the public. It's a touchy subject. Church members say the steeple has a special rellg1out signifi- cance. Whether or not it is acceptable, though, could be determined in the next month and a ball. During the public review period, resi- dents can · contest the report's findings. But this is not an opportunity for peo- ple to register their feelings on the subject. The public review period is just to make official the environmental document. The only input that will cany much weight during this part of the process is evidence that solidly refutes the consul- tants' findings or conclu- sions. Residents will continue to have the chance to' share any feelings or opinions on the process at any time, and their comments could factor heavily into the Planning Commission's upcoming decision. The dty's Environmental Quality Affairs Committee has created a subcommittee to go over the temple report and possibly form an opinion on the project. Lawrie Cunningham, a Vietnam veteran, was awarded a tennis scholarship to Arizona after his term in the U.S. Navy. ·we bad an opening there at Arizona and I convinced the coaches that my brother could play,• Rob Cunningham said .• •we played No. 2 doubles and never lost a match in the (Western Athletic Conference).• Known as Robbie throughout his early yean, Cunningham Cunningham felt fortunate to letter on Coach Wayne Horowitz's '67 tennis team, which featured Jim Ogle and defeated Santa Monlca in the~ ending the Vikings' then;miprfb!-· ~ented streak of five straJimfCIP titles. ·u was tough lettering my freshman year,• said Cunningham, who became one of the most decorated players in Newport Harbor and Orange Coast College history, before earning a tennis scholarship to the University of Arizona. As a senior, Cunningham captured the CIP doubles cham- pionship with teammate Glenn Cripe in 1970 -still Newport Harbor's only CIP doubles title. Cunningham, Cripe and Bob Ogle were the keys to the Sailors' second CIP team title in '10, after two years of playing bridesmaid to Rolling Hills. Coach Pat Wilson's Sailors remained a CIP power through 1974.
