Some came on scooters with patriotic tinsel fluttering through the air. Some arrived in regal fashion in wagons decked out with flags. No matter what their mode of transporta- tion, the Mariners community showed its patri- otic spirit in force on Thursday morning for the 29th annual Mariners Fourt.l} of July Parade and Carnival. Officials expected a bigger crowd than the 3,000 people who attended last year. "With everything that happened (on Sept. 11 ), a Jot of people decided not to travel this year and stay in their hometown,· said Eliza- beth B~es, event co-chair. •People have been very generous. There's a spm t of commu- nity.• Newport Beach and the Mariners Elemen- tary School Foundation sponsor the event This is the first year organiz~rs asked the ·parents at Mariners Elementary School to underwrite the event, which was prepaid for. The parade began in the morning when community members met at the comer of Com- modore Road and Mariners Drive and walked to Mariners Park. Upon their arrival, the park was instantly floodeg with red, white and blue. Electroshock treatments are the trans· fonning element for Andy Behnnan, who opens a window into a manic's world in bis high-octane autobiography, "Elec- troboy." For anyone interested in the mind's complexities, this ~nal account about the potent1al.ly deadly spi· ral of mental Wness offers insight into diagnosis and treabnent. Their stay lasted 20 years, and Ruess grew to feel at home among the ancient archeological sites in the Middle East, which later influenced her art. Her exhibit includes images of a little church, a yellow house, little boats, big . boats, harbors, beaches, Roman pillars and a Roman bridge, all of which nostalgically pay tribute to the place of her childhood. When it comes to painting people, RuesJ prefers women. •contemplation• shows a woman in Lebanon whose head is covered in cloth and who 1s holding her baby. Ruess randomly saw this woman in the street and Dai40J>ilot VOLM,N0.1M asked if sbe could photograph her years ago. The woman agreed. Ruess took the portrait and turned it into a painting. "It's taking those moments in life, it's about human condition: she said . ·rd rather do that than paint landscapes actual- ly. It involves more. And as a woman, I just love to paint women from other cultures. It makes me really rich inside when I paint about women in general." Another painting, titled "Reflection: shows a woman holding a child. Thinking back, Ruess says she should have titled the work something more severe, as the woman in the painting looks startled and scared. Her head ls also draped in a veil. , "Some wear veils and some don't,• the painter Mid. •This woman was in Turkey.• It 11 this sort of unexpected bit of knowl- edge ~t Ruess wants to share with the world through her art. Adams beat out Wmship in the last election with 85% of the vote. In 1994, Winship, a longtime Newport North resi· dent, was declared the winner of the council scat until final vote counts put Tom Edwards ahead by a mere handful of votes. Winship first ran fot the City Council in 1986, when he unsuccessfully challenged Clarence Turner for a seat. Winship, who considers wile Anna a partner in his cornmuniry activism and polit· ical life. describes himself as about ascx, in support of Greenlight. I must admit, I have a problem with that. A professional jury is definitely not the answer. With the repetition of crime after crime, lawsuit after lawsuit, those individuals would become nurnti to fac- tors within a case lhat would, under normal cir- cumstan'ces, lead them to make a very differe nt deci- sion. Certain professions - peace officers, attorneys, coroners, etc. -must learn bow to push aside their compassion in order to car- ry out their duties. This by no means sugge sts that they have no compassion, it simply means that they have '-" to develop an ability ""'at contradicts their innate human reaction. WEST NEWPORT -·The Fourth of July festivities began early Thursday on Lugonia Avenue as fire- works allegedly sparked a 27-year-old man to draw a handgun and assault a neighbor, police officials said. And I, for one, don't have a problem serving my country in that manner. To think of jury duty as "serving my country" may not seem an accurate per- ception; after all, I'm not fighting in the armed ser- vices. However, on a much smaller scale, it is a service. While my recent jury duty experience didn't lead to placement on an actual trial, I'd like to think my presence, along with the nearly 70 other potential jurors, helped force a crimi- nal case to settle. And that's precisely the propaganda (as some would see it) that they told us just "' before we were sworn in. I buy it. Call it an idealistic view if you'd like, but I came back from that experience feeling like l had done something useful to support democracy. Even though the day was drawn out and rather boring, I'd much rather focus on the bright side. I not only fulfilled my civic duty, but I got to read a large portion of a book I've been trying to finish for weeks pow. for me, it was a day well spent. Shortly after the fight was reported at 1:46 a.m. Thursday, police arrived in the 200 block of Lugonia only to learn that Wood- ward had already fled the scene, Shulman said. Offi- cers found him a few blocks away in the 6700 block of Coast ·Highway not long after and arrested him with- out incident, he said. The loaded .40-caliber, semiau- tomatic, Glock handgun was found separate from Woodward, who was held at Newport Beach city jail on. $50,000 bail, Shulman said., Apparently the c?n- frontation began after fire- works were launch~d into Woddward's patio from somewhere across the str~et near Saylor's residence, he sald. Woodward then ran over to Saylor's ho'use and the confrontation began, he said.
