P•ulCUnton DAILY PILOT CRYSTAL .COVE -State stew- ards of the historic cottages at the state park have launched efforts to rebuild an original footbridge to improve access to the beach, parks officials said. Acting as a quasi-gateway to a group of hard-to-reach cottages in the center of the cove's historic dis- trict, the bridge would allow pedes- trians and visitors with disabilities to reach a handful of the cottages.· California State Parks officials, managing the protection and restoration of the 46 cottages, are working in partnership with activist • and former resident Laura Dav.ick, who co-founded the Crystal Cove Conservancy, a nonprofit group rais- ing money to restore the cottages. •What we'll be al>le to do is open an area that is inaccessible to hand- icapped · visitors,• Davick said. •That's the driving force." The bridge, which was built in the 1930s, had allowed p¢estrians to cross a drainage channel that car- ries urban runoff to fhe beach. It was washed out during heavy rains in 1994 and again during the El Niilo storm of· 1998. About $50,000 has been set aside to rebuild the bridge. P•ul Clinton DAILY PILOT NEWPORT BEACH -With the federal government doling out billions of dollars for homeland security, defense and aid to the arr- line industry, city officials are harboring guarded optimism about funding for two local dredging projects. Rep. Chris Cox, who represents the city, has pushed for federal money for the projects. Cox said he has submitted requests for $6.3 million for the dredging work. Last weekend. we visit- ed The Falls Church in Vtrginia, which was established in 1732. It was given the name because of its location near the Little Falls on the Potomac River. My husband, Jon, and I towed · the church and the old cemetery, and it was intriguing to think of the history within those old brick walls and grassy grounds. Obviously, those walls didn't speak. but the written material spoke loudly of the church continuing its original founders' commitment to honor, love and being in relationship with God. There is wisdom, and freedom, in keeping God in his proper place of authority. Serving God by counting pennies Harbor Christian Church plans party to honor Warren Piper, who is retiring as the church's financial secretary . The next day, our family attended anoth- er nearby church, and we heard a powerful sermon about our country's history and her- itage. The pastor explained that though our country was founded on God's truth and principles, our society has eroded as we have forced God out of public life. If people will turn their hearts back to God individu- ally, we have a chance of turning our nation back to Its original strong foundation. We also heard a moving medley of the different service hymns of each of the armed forces. Those who had, were related to, or presently served stood when their song was played and the audience clapped. It was a powerful reminder that we need to respect. remember and honor those who have saoi- ficed for our freedom. For many, the price was paid in blood. Let us not onJ~ celebrate the birthday of our country's independence one day a year. Let us ensure it by praying every day for the hearts not only of oor-E.'<>unby'&Jeaden;, but .... also of all men and women. Living among our amber waves of grain and from sea to shining sea are people created by and loved by God, and with whom God desires a rela- tionship. This morning before waking to finish this colwnn, I had a dream in which r saw a churning sea filled with many different sizes and kinds of boat<>, some going in d.fcles, others bumping into each other, aRd' many floating aimlessly. It was as if nobody was at the helm of the ships, nobody was navigat- ing. After the tidal wave of terror in September, many people turned the helm of their boat5 and their hearts over to God. I pray that we continually ask God to be our navigator and that we find our ultimate free. dom in him. He kept track of people's financial pledges and was the sole guy responsible for counting the total offerings and deposit· ing them into the bank. Having served as the church's financial secretary for the la.st 10 to 15 years (Piper is so used to the task be doesn't remember how long it's been exactly), the longtime volunteer retired late last month because his eyesight is falling, which means work- ing with numbers gets ti.ring. "I have been fold that I have macular degeneration, which makes it difficult to focus on ordinary print and that sort of thing,"· said the 74-year-old. ·u also makes it difficult to drive a car." "When I was asked if I would consjder •· the financial secretary job, I said I would give it a try,· the Huntington Beach resi- dent said. •1 thought a job in which I was mainly responsible for my job alone was easier for me to handle.• Piper admitted that in the beginning, if he stopped to think about it, he was flat· tered the church trusted him with matters as big as money. •And it was a little scary, if I stopped to think about it,· he said. •w e don't have somebody standing guard over every step of the operation.• His volunteer duties, throughout the years, included gathering people's financial offerings, counting the sum and deposi!ing the money in the bank. He wrote financial reports every month for church leaders to read during board meetings, and he sent out letters quarterly to congregants who had made pledges to the church. The event, sponsored in part by Crate & Barrel and Macy's Home Store, attracted more than 2,000 revelers. Organizers had expected only 800 to attend. The festival and the cook- ing demorutrations raised significant funds for the two charities, which both serve needy families in Orange County. According to the groups, there are 400,000 men, women and children in Orange County at risk of going to bed hungry every night. Anton Segentrom, scion of the Segerstrom dynasty operating South Coast Plaza, has made this event an annual project that is not just a commercial exercise but a personal commitment based on a real connection to helping eradicate hunger in our midst. Segerstrom was inspired by the dedication of Merle Hatleberg, who start- ed Someone Cares Soup Kitchen in 1986. In a wheelchair, Hatleberg began her hunger project using whatever funds she could gather, orig- inally serving some 30 peo- ple a day in Costa Mesa. Experts estimate that 60% of these recipients are children and seniors. The restaurants of South Coast Plaza made a massive commitment to the cause, donating food to satisfy the participants, who paid $40 in advance or $50 at the door to make a difference.in the lives of people who real- ly need help.
