However the black paint on the hull was replaced with white during the summer of 1955 when Sea Drift participated in the 'D'ans Pacific Yacht Race, placing eighth in her class. During the yea.rs Farwell owned Sea Ori.ft (1954-1961), she raced ln three Trans Pacific Yacht races to Honolulu, two San Diego-to Acapulco races and 10 Ensenada races, plus many local failboat races. There were three premises that the crew of the Sea Drift followed: Always sail Sea Drift ln an efficient seaman-like manner, always have fun and Win the race. In addition to racing. the Farwell family enjoyed CJ'Wsing ln Sea Drift. Their favorite local destination was White's Cove at Santa c.ataiina Island. Sea Drift would anchor off Hen Rocle near the Newport Harbor Yacht Oub's station at Moonstone. Whether under way in a race or at anchor, the crew always had a happy hour on deck each evening. with singing and good fellowship. The crew dressed up a bit for the evening festivities. The happy hour was followed by a five-course sit-down dinner in the ma1n-Siloon. Sea Drift was a truly happy ship in all respects. After the 1957 Honolulu Race, Farwell and his salty crew sailed west to explore some of the islands made famous during World War n. When they approached French Frigate Shoals, they contacted the U.S. Naval Commandant on the island by radio. who said "You can't rand here, this is a secret naval base." When he was told that Barry Goldwater was aboard, he replied, "please come in." First. the harbor is open to everyone and technically no one can block any portion of navigable waters unless granted a special event permit by the United States Coast Guard. With that said, I have noticed that sailing programs are making an effort to leave room between their buoys and the shore for "sea room" passage. However. in a few instances I have been blocked, QOt by the racers, but by the committee or spectator boats drifting outside the course into the passage lanes. Boaters cruising through the harbor need to plan ahead and try to avoid the sailing course by planning a course outside of the markers. Please watch for the beginner sailor who may loose control and drift in front of your vessel Sometimes it is impossible to avoid the Oeet or if a vessel is in the middle of sailboats, then everyone needs to be courteous, as p~bed by maritime law and right of way dictates for all vessels. The sallors do not need to be waving and yelling for the boat to move and harsh words do not need to be exchanged. Everybody should stay calm and try to get the vessel through the Oeet without tempers Oaring. Seamanship and good sportsmanshlp are what we need to be instilling as boaters. and there will always be another day, t hope. RED LIGHT CAMERAS The City Council will con.kier tonight a proposed contract with Neltor Trafftc Systems, whktl would allow the company to Install red light camerea at specific lnter~ona and keep a portion of the collected flnea. The council unanimously decided In · September to go ahead with plans to Install camera designed to catdl drivers who run red lights. City staff members have recommended a "turnkey" program, In which the company would Install cameras at designated Intersections at no cost, in retum for a portion of the fino resulting from a violation. Nestor would receive $97.56 for every $271 fine captured by the system, a ata1f report shows. Similar surveillance systems are controversial In part because of the agreements that cities sign with private companies that install and operate the systems. The Eastside of Costa Mesa is generally described as the area of the city east of Newport Boulevard made up mostly of _ homes, with the exception of 17th Street - a major thoroughfare that is home to' a number of businesses. Because of their simple gijststructure, the smaller streets in the East!f!~e, like Orange and Santa Ana avenues, have become popular with drivers looking to avoid Newport Boulevard. According to a staff report, the traffic volumes have not increased dramatically in the area but volumes are higher than expected on the seven street segments. I tried out five game at the fair on a warm sunny morning. and to my surprise, I walked out with four prizes-three stuffed animals of varying. albeit small, sizes, and a squishy ball in a net Of course, I was $21 lighter in the wallet The first game I played was the Bowl-a-Rama in the Carnival section. A clutter of fishbowls Ooat on the surface of a small pond. A few of the bowls are colored -red, whJte and yellow. The object of the game is to throw a ping-pong ball into the bowl, thus ensuring youc prize. ~BY CRYSTAL LAUOEROAl..E/DM.Y PILOT Jerry Antisdel of Garden Grove gets ready to toss a fast one at a row of beer bottles at the fair's ~Bust booth. The prizes at this particular booth were stuffed shaggy d~ of all sius. They were cute. There's a similar game in the ldddJe camtval, though, that has Scooby Ooo dolls. a personal favorite. You get a small prize for getting the ball in the red bowl a medium prize for the yellow bowl and a large prit.e for the blue bowl. There are few blue bowls. For $2 you get eight balls. For $5, you get 25 ping-pong balls and are guaranteed a prize. I threw 25 ping-pong balls, only Lo waLch 25 ping-pong balls bounce cheerfully away. Not a single one did I land. lf I had it to do over again, I'd gently arc the balls more and aim for the red cup in the middle. It doesn't move. I tried the Beer Bust next, throwing softballs at a panel of beer bottles. You get two balls for S2 or six for $5. It seemed easy after my first throw. when l broke a bottle. Then I tried . again and again and again - you have to break two to win a prize -and realized that no major, minor or other league team will ever come scouting for me. Though it was a bust for me, the Beer Bust did have some of the coolest prizes, including a Shrek doll that I kinda wanted, then realized it would take up too much space on my desk at work. I fared much better at darts in the Balloon Bust It's $2 for one dart or SS for three. I went for the three, figuring I would need the chances. I burst a balloon on the first try. though my other two tries were duds, and walked away with a cute white teddy bear that plays an annoying rendition of "Happy Birthday" if you press its hand. Someone will be getting that as a white elephant gift this Ouistmas. Having cried my luck with the adult carnival, I decided to see if the ldddie carnivar games were any easier. The answer is, not really, although many or the games give kids a prize just for playing. At Tip-Em-Over, I threw three bean ~ at a stacked trio of cups and only managed to .knock one over. I did get a small red dog for my $5 worth of effort Next time I will aim for the center. Who am I kidding, next time I will avoid the games in which I have to throw thing& The last midway game I played was the one I wanted to win the most, because it had frog prince dolls. Having kissed enough frogs, I thought it'd be nice to get one with a crown. But even though I spent $2 and sank the basketball into the net at Jr. } lotshots, that was only enough to win me a small squishy balJ in a net Apparently, you have to get three baskets to win one of the dolls. I d ecided I didn't want to watch myself miss again and called it a day. Of all the midWa.ys I've ever been to, I won helter prizes with less effort at the Orange C.ounty Fair. Now, if only I could find a basketball player .... •JENNIFER K MAHAL is features editor of the Daily Pilot. She may be reached at jennlfer.mahal@lotimes.com.
