More than 30 separate tiers of
coverage went into effect at the air-
port Monday, when the previous
coverage expired, said Risk Assess-
ment Manager Sharon Lightholder.
The increase was at the low end o1

The county bolds two basic types
of coverage on the airport: one for
property damage, the other for per-
sonal injury claims.
The airport's most comprehen-
sive policies cover the county in the
event of damage to or loss of prop-
erty. The county will extend more
than two dozen policies amounting
to $250 million in coverage.
The cost of insuring the airport
itsell jumped 61.5% when compared
with last year. The new coverage
will cost the county $1.77 nullion.
The county also holds $200 nul-
lion in two policies protecbng 1t
against lawsuits stemming from
bodily mjuries. That coverage
spiked 66.5%. Jumping to $452,646.
The Sept. 11 terronst attacks

Beach police arrested actress Tawny
Kitaen alter she beat her husband, for-
mer Angel pitcher Chuck Flnley, dur-
ing a domestic dispute Monday night,
officials said.
Police received a 911 hang-up call
from the couple's Newport Coast home
about 8:40 p.m. Monday, Sgt. Steve
Shulman said. Plnley, a 6-foot-6 pitch-
er for the Cleveland Indians, suffered
cuts and bruises to his bands and face
after his wife beat him with her bare
hands and high-heeled shoes, he said
"The incident happened in the car
when they were on their way home,·
Shulman said. ·But the call came from
their home."
Kitaen was arrested and taken to
Orange County Jail. She was held on
$25,000 ball until released Wednesday
on her own recognizance.
Shulman said it is not known whether

resentatives late last month. It offers
terms of a half-century's secunty on the

To some, the revitalization
of Balbpa Peninsula now
underway seemed to pro-
vide a perfect opportunity
to replace desbuctive ficus
trees on Main Street with
another species. But to oth-
ers, it's an ideal opportunity
to save the trees.
A public bearing tenta-
tively scheduled for the
April 9 City Council meet-
ing will give locals a
chance to chime in on the
the 15-year-old question of
what to do with the trees.
The Parks Beaches and
Recreation Commission on
May 7 is scheduled to con-
sider giving final approval
to remove the 25 trees. But
if anyone appeals the mat-
ter, it could end up before
the City Council by the end
of May.

a lot of damage, particular-

Services Department Man-
ager Dave Niederhaus

of residents and business
owners have requested the
trees be removed.
He also explained that
10 of the 25 trees are desig-
nated as landmark trees,

eration must be taken
before removing them. But
Niederhaus said that, after

officials nonetheless came
to the conclusion that a1J

ficus. About three weeks
ago, eucalyptus trees were
planted along Balboa
Boulevard in place of ficus.
Vandersloot said,
though, that planting
younger trees will destroy
the canopy created by the

ary along Newport Boule-
vard.
The unanimous decision
allows the church to build
a 36-foot-high, 7,910-
square-foot tent at 2115
Newport Blvd., the church's
eventual location once it
moves from its Orange
Avenue site.
The council Monday
granted the church a 2 1/2-
year approval, alter which
the church will be required
to request an extension of
up to another 2 1/2 years.
The church says it needs
the tent because its perma-
nent sanctuary cannot be
built until they sell the
Orange Avenue property.
In the meantime, the
church will monitor the real
estate market. Church offi-
cials say it's more difficult
to sell the site now because
the city issued a moratori-
um on small-lot develop-
ment. The Orange site is in
a medium-density residen-
tial zone.
The Planning Commis-
sion in late February voted
3 to 2 to reject the church's
request, saying the tent
would not be compatible
with its surroundings and
would set a precedent for
other churches that have
outgrown their buildings.
When it comes down to
it, though, Newport Boule-
vard appears to be a piece-
meal set up as it is, so how
can something actually not
fit in there? Further, the
Planning Com.mission, just
like the. City Council,
should make decisions with
planning in mind and a
heart within.
After the com.mission's
decision, the church did
make some adjustments to
appease city officials, and
the City Council made it
worth its effort. The right
decision has been made.
However, we do urge
the church not to take
advantage of the council's
generosity and to sell its
Orange Avenue property
sooner rather than later.
After the 2 112 years, we
hope the church will not
need to ask for another 2
1/2-year extension. We
hope by then that the per-
manent sanctuary will be
built or that it will be close
to being finished.

Hey, whose dock is it anyway?
If the city of Newport Beach has
to dip its hands into regulating free
enterprise through trucing dock
renters, then I hope that the dock
owners are smart enough to figure
out a legal opinion on how they can
avoid paying more stupid taxes
("Dock rentals will get scrutiny,•
March 29).
I hope the new •harbor• com-
mission under the command and
final say of our mayor looks at how
much revenue the offshore moor-
ings bring the city, and what the
mooring owners get for their tax
dollar.
Does the tax go directly back to
the mooring/boat owner, such as
lighted convenience slips with fil-
tered running water and trash cans?
Has that money collectively been
used for dredging over the last 30
years? Or does it end up in the
beach and parks fund?
If a tax is assessed, then would it
be fair to have everyone pay the
same rate? Would the State Lands
Commission get the tax? Does the
city get an extra tax if you rent out
a room in your house or an apart-
ment? So is a dock zoned for use by
the sole owner of the house? What
if the house is a rental, does the
renter get to use the dock? What if
a duck moves in?
U Newport Bay is listed as an
"impaired waterway• by the state
of California, then our leaders
should be at grace for letting prop-
erty owners pay to live and recreate
in polluted and impaired water for
millions of dollars of the ir hard
earned money.
I also would request under con-
sideration a •wait in traffic rebate•
for driving through Corona del Mar.

On Sunday, I read your editorial
titled "The name is lame.· which
warned of a group proposing we
change the name of our city from
Costa Mesa to Costa Mesa-by-the-
Sea. Although I am not sure I like
the Idea of ordering new checks,
address labels, rubber stamps, etc .. I
would suggest that we consider (at
lea.st what I am told) is the more
grammatically correct in Spanish:
Costa de la Mesa, meaning "table of
the coast.· I feel this has a much
classier ring to it, like Corona del
Mar, Marina del Rey and Cota de
Caza. Don't you agree?

himself as the king of Ameri-
ca's comedy playwrights, but
not until the late 1980s did he
give vent to
THEATER pure, unadul-
terated farce. REVIEW Before that,
his closest
dpproach to this genre was

more than 30 years ago.
With "Rumors," however,
Simon's patented one-liners
link up with uproarious sight
gags in a convoluted plot that
requires repeated viewings to
lruly sort out. It's also a rarity
in the Simon canon -a true
ensemble comedy, with the
qood stuff spread quite derno-
natically among its eight
principal characters, and con-
taining nearly as much ctia-
logue in the key of F as your
lypical David Mamet opus.

and frolic is an anniversary
party hosted by a couple we
never see. The husband is
recovering from a bullet
wound to the ear, and the
wile is missing. A recipe for
madcap comedy? Absolutely.

what might have happened.
First on the scene are Ken
(Jamie Polli) and Chris (Jillary
Gordon), a pair of lawyers
striving to apply the proper

Lenny with a severe case of
whiplash.
Psychiatrist Ernie (Wes
Martens) and his TV cooking
show hostess wife, Cookie
(Sharon Simonian). are next
on the scene, both enduring
liberal doses of physical pain
(her sprained back; his
burned fingers) throughout
the evening. Finally, we get
squabbling spou~s Glenn
(Dave Schade), a nervous
aspiring politician. and Cassie
(Karen Franson), seething
with jealousy. which may or
may not be justified.
Mixed together and stirred
vigorously, this company
interacts with vigor and
verve. a capable ensemble
with numerous inctividual
highlights emerging. Chief
among these are Mulligan's
convoluted explanation to the
curious police officers (Justin
Brusca and Jenny Stumpf)
and Franson's tense tantrums,
which morph into comedic
vamping.
Gordon's aching nicotine
withdrawal and Polli's gun·
shot-inspired deafness also
gamer a plethora of laughs,
while Martens' and Simon-
ian's middle-aged billing and
cooing contrast ni£ely with
the rancorous jibes burled P.-Y
Schade and F.ranson. Mulli-
gan and Davis lift the show's
comedy level as they plot to
save their unseen friends fur.

ating an.attractive, upper·
class interior setting on which
the comic bedlam· is played
out Butler bas done a fine job
highlighting the contributions
of eaoh performer on a small

frantic comic desperation
remains fresh and exceeding-
ly funny in the hands of a
superior ensemble such as
the cast at the Thlogy Play-
house. This is Neil Simon at
his absolute funniest.

The film revolves around a
room designed to be a fortress
against home invasion in an
immense Manhattan town-
house. However, the audience
learns, along with the protag-
onists, that such a room can
be easily transformed from a
sarictuary into a trap for its
inbabilarlts.
Meg Albnan, played by
Jodie Foster, is recently
divori:ed from her millionaire
husband and moves into the
townhouse with her 11-year-
old daughter, Sarah. Unbe-
knownst to them, three men
have set their sights on a for-
tune that is hidden in the pan-
ic room.
These would-be thieves
are initially thrown off by the
fact that the home is already
irlhabited, an unforeseen diffi-
culty that their greed con-
vinces them they can over-
come.

vinaigrette. I like to order the
latter crumbled with some of
the blue cheese. Morton's also
serves a respectable Caesar
($6.95) that's not timid with
the anchovies. although I
thought the kitchen was a bit

ed, cooked expertly under the
guidance of Executive Chef
Dwight Craig, and the servers
are well-skilled at describing
exactly what the difference
will be between medium and
med.iwn rare.
There are probably as
many opinions on the best cut
of beef as there~ ex-Enron
employees, but true connois-
seurs seem to prefer the rib-
eye. Morton's rib-eye ($29.95)
is a generous 16-ounce cut
perfectly marbled and as ten-
der as any I've had.
Filet mignon is popular
these days as a leaner and
often more tender steak, and
Morton's offers a healthy 14-
ounce filet that melts in your
mouth. Because of the lower
fat content, filets are consid·
erect slightly less flavorful
than other cuts, and Morton's
dresses theirs up with a tangy
beamaise, the classic French
sauce that's similar to hol-
landaise but with vinegar.
The signature steak at
Morton's is a 24-ounce bone-
in porterhouse ($34.95). Or,
for the truly adventurous (and
well-off) take a shot at the 48-
ounce version of the same
steak ($69.95). They don't
give a medal for finishing one
of these, but it's sure some-
thing to tell your friend's
about.
In true steakhouse fashion,
Morton's dispenses with any
pretense of presentation. You
won't find edible flowers
adorning you're plate or tow-
ers of artfully arranged herbs.
Order a steak, and you get a
steak on a white plate, noth-

decadent. The small round,
flourless cake is tilled with a

Coast Tournament.
"This is by far the best spring break we've had
since I've been here, so I'm not the least bit disap·
pointed," CdM Coach John Emme, in his fifth year,
said after San Clemente defeated his Sea Kings, 8-1, to
win the tournament title at TeWinkle Park.

Her personal best m the 400 came at an opportune brne. She
came out of the blocks in lane 9, wtuch is a difficult spot to wm
from. Day also conquered a challenge over the last 50 yards to
win the race
