And in the process they took away
the voters we had once won and
stuck them in our ear. Mostly with a
mythic Park in the Sky that North
C.Ounty people wouldn't visit even if
lt ever existed. We allowed that bit of
gmu.e to destroy an airport that
would have served many thousands
of North County people.

intolerance on the Internet.

COSTA MESA -A newly released report de-
signed to outline the use of the Internet as a
tool to further hate has idenlified two local or-
ganizations as hosting extremist activities.
"Digital Hate 2002," compiled and released
by the Los Angeles-based Simon Welsenthal
Center, highlighted the Web sites of the Aryan
Baby Drive and the lnslirute for H1Storical Re-
view -which are both based in Co~ta Mesa -
as promoting intolerance via the World Wide
Web.
The Simon Weisenthal Center, an interna-
tional Jewish human rights organization.
charges that the Institute for Historical Review
uses the Internet to distribute anti-Semitic
propaganda, which it says manipulates history
and influences similar intolerant viewpoints.
"The IHR Web site houses some of the most

battling to keep the dream alive for the El Toro
Marine Corps Air Station is criticizing the ef-
forts by lrvine and the Navy to tum the prop-
erty into a "Great Part."

based in Newport Beach, said a plan unveiled
by the South County city and Navy during a
Tuesday press conference "is no plcnJc" be-
cause it substin.ltes retail shops and housing
for true open space.
"The Great Parle bait-and-switch that began
with Measure W continues with this version of

It has been a busy, and momentous,
week for Chris Cox-one capped
Wednesday by his Jead role in a
. compromise plan expected to bring about
sweeping corporate reform.
On that day, Newport Beach's
leading-light congressman and other
high-ranking leglslators put the tlna1
touches on a bill that wouJd rewrite the
rules fo r corporate accounting and
gavemance.
Paired with Rep. Michael Oxley (R-OhJo),
Cox worked closely to bridge the gap
between Senate and House versions of the
Public Company Accounting Reform and
Investor Protection Act. The bill, proposed
by Sen. Paul Sarbanes (0-Maryiand),
passed the Senate 97 to 0 last week.
The fl.naJ version of the bill ls expected to
be approved by the House and Senate
1oday. Bush has saJd he would sign It soon
thereafter.
With the bill's passage, tougher penaJties
could be slapped on executives who shred
documents and stricter supervision of
company auditors. The bill would also
crea1e an independent panel overseen by
the Securtties and Exchange Com.ml.s&on
to monitor accounting practices.
"Fraud and unfair dealing are the
enemies of the free enterprise system, and
as we can see from the turmoil in our
markets. our country .ls paying a very high
price because those in power have broken
faith with their employees and their
investors," Cox said in a Wednesday
statemenL ~1 have no doubt that today. we
are enacting good, tough. strong new
rules."
Today, lteasury Secretary Paul O'Neill is
scheduled to speak before the House Policy
Committee, which Cox chairs.
O'Neill has taken Oak from Democrats
for hls fairly low profile in re<ient weeks,
during a string of corporate scandals that
have caused havoc o.n Wall Street. At. the 9
a.m. hearing, O'Neill will address current
economic eondldons.

a committee hearing proved hazardous
for Rep. Dana Rohrabacher last week. as a
Southern Democrat suggested he was a
racist for cutting off her long-winded
speech.
Rohrabacher stopped Rep. Shella
Jackson Lee CD-Houston) 10 minutes after
she had exceeded her five-minute time
limit during a House Science Committee
hearing.
After Surf City's congressman asked Lee
to "be more disciplined in being able to
asJc a specific question," she took offense.
"I'm the only member that you
comment on," Jack.son Lee said. "It may
be tha1 I'm the only African American
woman sitting here."

Chances are Rep. Dana Rohrabacher would have rather been surfing last
week instead of getting into a nasty verbal exchange during a House
committee hearing. He survived to surf anottier day.
Jackson Lee's remark came after an
angry exchange in which Rohrabacher,
the chainnan of the committee, slammed
his gavel down and told the
congresswoman she was not recognized
and needed to stop talking.
Stunned by the accusation,
Rohrabacher responded: "Ms. Jackson
Lee, that type of charge ls beneath you.
It's beneath your d.lgnfty."

Groups in Costa
Mesa are standing
together to stop new
rules from becoming
too intrusive.

who began unrelated battles
with City Hall because of new
laws they felt threatened their
personal lives are becoming
philosophical allies In their fight
to keep local government from
becoming too Intrusive.
Most notably, members of the
Costa Mesa RV Owners Assn. -
the group that crusaded against
more stringent parking regula-
tions for motor homes -have
voiced support for the P,sta
Mesa Cruisers, who will face the
council next month to ask that
inoperable cars be allowed in
their own backyards.
Dave Goss, president or Costa
Mesa RV Owners A.'lsn., said he is
planning to support lhe Cruisers
at the Aug. 5 City Council meet-
ing. not only because he cham·
plons the hobby of fixing up
classic cars but because he ls
concerned about general civil

have really kind of accelerated
futer than we would expect,"
Monahan said. "I think we need
to take a break and see where
we are. The personality of Costa
Mesa is in danger of falling apart
if too many restrictions are put
in place."
Barrie agreed with the council-
man, saying most Costa Mesa
residents are here because of the,
diversity, lhe variety and the
city's ulive and let Jive" attitude.

the city has its own spirit that
makes it a great place to live,
Barrie said.
"Costa Mesa is traditionally a
hands-off type of place," Barrie
said. "It is a wonderful little Cali-

traditionally allows people to live
their life the way they want, and
with that you run the risk that
your neighbor might paint his
house purple."

Irvine Mayor Larry Agran,

Measure W, unveiled the plan,
saying it "meets all the goals of
the city of Irvine."
"There will be no airport at El
Toro," Agran said, in a state·
ment "And, yes, just as we
promised, we will create one of
America's greatest metropolitan
parks right here in the center of
Orange C.ounty."
In a statement responding to
the new plan, Airport 'M>rting
Group members said they applied
"the pknic· test" to each proposed
section of the park plan.

nic at the site?" the release
asked rhetorically.
Not ·at the 194 acres set aside
as "drainage/wilclllfe corridor,"
of taking the lead in finding a
way to make that altema~
happen. Rohrabacher was out
surfing somewhere and C.OX was
nuzzling with the Navy while the

airport. I don't recall him saying
then that the voters had spoken.
Only after we finally blew it did
he hear the voters speak.
So why this tirade?
Because this whole miserable,
expensive eight-year episode
needs to be seen with a little bit
of honesty before it can be given
a proper burial. Right now, it's
been given little more than a
coametlc makeover by public
officials, but if we have to bury
the El Toro airport, let's at least
remove the lipstick and rouge
first-and then maybe hold the
killers accountable. That won't
make the noise on my patio any
more palatable, but it might
provide a little bit of satisfaction.
According to the Los Angeles
Tunes, some $80 million lo
public funds -about evenly
divided between the two sides

A clean victory
is claimed in
sewage fight
D espite some
significant opposition
from inland cities in
Orange County, last week's
decision by the Orange
County Sanitation District to
provide stronger treatment of
waste that is pumped into
waters off the Santa Ana
River mouth is a victory for
everyone living and playing
in the county.
Now, instead of 240 million
gallons of partially treated
sewage waste being sent
miles off the shore, millions
more gallons will get full
treatme nt.
And over the months and
years. those millions wilJ
multiply until, by nearly all
accounts, there will be much
less chance of beach closures
near where the district's
outfall pipe empties four
miles out to sea. It m eans
less chance that a summer
could be ruined, as 1999 was
in neighboring Huntington
Beach. It means less chance
that the so-caJJed plume of
sewage from the outfall pipe
could creep back to close
range of Newport Beach.
A year ago, the outcome of
this vote was just about
unimaginable.
It is unlikely that it ever
would have occurred without
the hard work of
environmental activists who
refused to be ignored. They
hammered away at city and
county leaders to make it
cleat that ending the waiver
and partial treatment was a
necessity.
They also won the
important media war and
managed to get their voices
to the public via newspapers
and television stations.
The result was a swing of
public opinion against the
waiver. Those activists on the
front lines of this fight
deserve thanks.
Applause also is due to
officials in the county's
coastal cities, notably
Newport Beach and Costa
Mesa, for getting involved in
the battle against the waiver,
the status quo and the
sanitation district.
In fact, it was a key vote by
the Costa Mesa Sanitary
District that helped push this
vote over to the side of those
who want cleaner ocean
waters.
Yes, the treatment will cost
more, and that money will
come from county taxpayers'
pockets.
But the estimated $16 a
year price tag per person is a
bargain to ensure the
beaches and waters are open,
safe and clean.

out there. Let's understand that the

"What I'm all about is giving people confidence
in their own style and not preaching what they
should be doing now because the trend is
whatever they are doing." Jennings said.
Jennings is the creator, executive producer and
host of "Lynette Jennings Design" on the
Discovery Otannel. She is also the North
American design and d~r spokeswoman for
Home Depot.
During her talk today, Jennings will encourage
people to find and eventually flaunt their own
style.
Color will be a main theme of the discussion.
"A lot of people don't know what color to
choose," Jennings said. "I tell them to go look in
their closets because your natural affinity for
color is in your wardrobe."
She will also provide advice on how to decorate
a room, ll.lc.e "Town and Country" on a shoestring
budget .
"lfyou're on a limited budget, paint is your
best friend," Jennings said.
Jennings will offer tips on how to be a
trend-tracker and spot trends of the future.
She will aJso demonstrate a Doral arrangement
with an unusual container that can be displayed poolside as the theme of the fair is water. Lynette Jennings will present a design presentation on tfle Heritage Stage at the fair on Thursday.

8-year-old Josh Guillen of Santa Ana,
who responded with an emphatic "no"
when asked if he would ever dress up as
a girl, even if it was onstage.

'Eight Legged Freaks'
Kids and adults fall for 'Stuart' ;

P rosperlty is the random rural
jerkwater h.ick town bles.1ed with
problems ln "Eight Legged
Freaks." It's prosperous all right -with
conspiracy freaks, fat shedlfs. loaded
teenagers and a citizenry whose JQs
are maJginally greater than their
declining nwnber or teeth.
Tooling along the narrow mountain
road toward this intellectual sinkhole is
the obligatory truck. Rickety and rusty,
its driver tries to avoid a resident
rodent that should have been road kill
The driver swerves and inadvertently
tests the escape velocity of the
ubiquitous oil drum or two, wh.ich are
no doubt filled with our usual suspects:
toxic chemicals and plot contrivances.
WeU, they're off the truck. down the
road, into the ditch and fouling the
water, just upstream from the local
spider farm. Uvirig near the water are
crickets. The crickets start to act
strangely after drinking in the
steroid-like chemicals. The crickets are
fed to spiders by the resident mad
scientist and, voila, the dubious
premise to a classically stupid movie.
Fattened up on the toxic crickets, our
friendly neighborhood spiders stan to
grow like a government program. They
can jwnp like Cart Lewis, run like
Seattle Slew and eat like teenagers.
These little prizes escape from their
cages, chow down on their benefactor
and are discovered by a Harry Potter
look-aliJce. Where are the Orlcin or
Terminex guys wh en you need them?
In fact, where's a good film editor
when you need one?
That's what makes "Eight Legged
Freaks" such a fun flick. This is as
dumb as they come and as s tupid as
it gets. From watching the rubber
spiders !t'trolJ amo ng the plastic
saguaros filmed among some of the
hokiest miniatures ever committed to
celluloid, this flick is a classic
no-brainer. Not quite "Tremors," but
much berter than say. "Citizen Kane."
This leads to su ch classic dialogue
as: "Come on," "I'll find another way
out," "ll's the only way out." "It's
locked," "We're trapped," and, of
course, "Oh, my God."
Starring a bunch of nobodies
whose acting aJdll.a are so missing that
they're probabtf listed on the bacb of
milk cartons everywhere, backed by a
soundtrack probably stolen from a
pomo 8lm or a whoopee cusb.lon,
"Eight Legged Frew· rips off about
every cheesy monster movie ever
made. Most obviously It takes from
the "Night of the Uving Dead• series.
As it tu.ms out, the mayor of
Prosperity, adorned with a ponytail
and more wrinkles than the San
Andreas fault, ls in cahoots with
various other local nefarious
Neanderthals to make some bucks by
storing toxic waste in a nearby
abandoned gold mine.
Well who should ride into town, not
on a white horse, but on a Greyhound
-to this burg that those with even
rudimentary intelligence would take a
Greyhound out of -but our hero and
protagonist, David Arquette.
Overacting to the point of being toxic
himself, he schleps, stumbles and·
strolls through both town and mine,
Moses-like and Gary Cooper-lsh, to
save what really doesn't deserve to be
saved : the town and the people. He
sure ain't gonna save the movie.
Leading h.is people out or their
houses, to the shopping mall and into
the mines, our hero fiddles while
Rome bums as the townsfolk are
eaten like Lay's potato ch.ips. Them
spiders are hungry. Lousy table
manners combined with a tendency
to slurp their food, the townsfolk.
make them quite undesirable socially.
Arquette finally bums them, like cats
on a hot tin roof, like feet on asphalt
on a summer's day. like s'mores lo a
campfire, like bad metaphors from a
lousy columnist, with the methane
that's conveniently floating around in
the mine. Are all the little buggers
gone, or will there be a part two?
There's a no-brainer.

plays soccer, drives a miniature red
convertible and does some other
things. But it is with great
reluctance on the part of the
. parents. They fear for Stuart. mainly
because of his size. His mother
(Geena Davis) is the most fearful for
• him, and hardly ever lets him go
anywhere without supervision.
Stuart recognizes this, and becomes
determined to prove her wrong.
Stuart's life changes when a little
bird, named Margalow,
"accidentally" falls into his
convertible. They becom e great
friends, or rather seemingly great
friends. What Stuart doesn't know
is that the bird is a con artist,
plotting to rob people of their
valuables.
After Margalow (voiced by
Melanie Griffith) mysteriously
leaves with no sign or her
whereabouts, Stuart decides to go
on a full-fledged search in an effort
to find his new friend. What be
encounters is more than he
bargalned for. The rest of the story
is the adventure of his life.
In a way, I think that the cat,
Snowbell (voiced by Nathan Lane),
stole the show. He was the oniy
part of the movie that had any
funny remarks, which were mos tly
adult humor. In the theater I was
in, many of the lcids bad comments

like "I don't get it" or "I'm
confused.• The adults were getting
all the laughs, and the lcids just sat
there, puzzled.
It's not to say that lcids won't
enjoy the movie. They just won't
think or It as a funny show.
I don't think it was really that
bad. What I mean is that It was
entertaining, but onty to the point
of the comedy~ The kids will enjoy
it because they can easily relate to
the title character, and the adults
will enjoy the lines from the cat.
Comedy. along with moral values.

The film stars David Arquerte as
Oui.s McCormaclc. a miner who has
returned to a small town after l 0
years to run the mine that he
inherited from his father. Arquette,
who is best known for looky
characters like Deputy Dewey in
"Scream" and the 1-800-COu.ECT
guy, seems strangely subdued in this.

mother. Wuhrer, who must have a
thing for giant animal movies as
her last big part was In
"Anaconda,• also disappointed me
with a decent performance. These
may seem like odd criticlsms, but
bear with me.
Th1s film was marketed as a
modem remake of the cheesy
B-movies of the 1950s, with terrible
speclal effects and even worse
acting. And oddly enough. that is
what made them great. But "Eight
Legged Freaks" takes away those
elements and all that Is left is a
mediocre sci-6 ruck. The only
overacting is done by Doug E. Doug,
who plays a disc jockey who runs a
radio station out of his trailer home.
Unfortunately, Doug is trying so
hard, h e often becomes tiresome.
And the worst part about the
niovie is how wonderful the special
effects are. The spiders actually look
very real and never fail to give the
audience a startle, showing that the
filmmakers completely missed the
point about why the audience likes
these movies. Th~ movies are not
about realism, they are meant to be
corny. We are supposed to laugh at
giant rubber spiders and see the
· strings that are making them move,
not be mesmerired by how
authentic they look.
Of course, this m ovie was made
by the same people who lcilled
Godzilla, a lask that co~d not be
accomplished by American and
Japanese filmmakers for n:iore than
40 years.
If you are in the m ood for a
mediocre movie about a town that
struggles to stop a bunch of spiders
that have grown to the slze of
Volkswagens because of a toxic
waste spill, go check out "Hight
Legged Freaks." But if you have a
hankering for some real American
cheese, your best bet is to go down
to the local video store and scan
the shelves for something vintage.
"Eight Legged Freaks" is rated
PG-13 for sci-Ji vwlence, brief
sexuality and language.

I think we all know that
birthdays. especially later
birthdays, get you to
wondering, thinking about all
the really important things in
life, and asking yowself: Are
they really lmponant? Well,
I've been thinking and
perhaps it's time I addressed
some of those top priorities
right away.
Mexican food. There's one. We
go to the same two restaurants
all the time, one ls average and
the other ls the kind of
heavy-duty stuff that you
shouldn't be eating more than
twice a year. So we've been
looking for an alternative. My
brother suggested we venture
over to Mr. Juan's Gringo Grill,
on the comer of Fairview Road
and. Wtlson Street, after he went
to a wedding rehearsal dinner
where Mr. Juan's was the caterer.
He loved it.

what this place was when I used
to drive by it on my way to
work. When I walked in for the
first time, the Interior, surfing
meets Mexico's finest and

long list of combination plates
that includes all the mariscos,
a.le.a. shellfish. as well as chiJe
verde ($6.95), pork simmered
in a tangy tomatillo (green
chile) sauce. I won't go on
because it is making me
hungry, but I guarantee you
will find something you like.
Better yet, you'll find
something you don't even yet
know that you like.
The fact that this restaurant
ls also a favorite of our friend
Laura, born and raised in
Mexico, gave us even more
incentive to check it out. And
check it out we did. This
Gringo Grill now has our gringo
stamp of approval as "muy
bueno.•
The walls are splashed in
either Pacific blue or a sunlight
gold, with a colorful vine that
runs around the restaurant.
The tables are covered in royal
blue, but it is the chairs that I
love best. Each one seems to be
different, carved in a rustle way
and.painted in the varying
bright festival colors that I
associate with the very best of
Mexico. All of it says
"Welcome" and "relax.· There
are, of course, several odes to
surfing, my favorite being the
smallish fountain of a surfer
riding that ultimate wave,
which you see as you walk in
the door.

Mexican breakfast menu,
terrific because it has my very
favorite, the hard to find
chilaquiles ($4.25) -fresh
tortilla chips sauteed with red
salsa, topped with green salsa
and eggs, either scrambled or
poached. While you are eating
that. read the'test of the
breakfast menu for next time.
First. a little history. Mr. Juan's
has been wider its current
management for the last two
years. It is co-owned by Ouis
and Karen Wllllarns -they are
parents, surfeTS and restaurant
owners; maybe even in that
order -and Carlos Hernandez,
who served as head chef at Las
Briaas for 20 years. Carlos, when
asked if be had anything he
would like to especially
mention in this article, simply
said, "We invite everyone to

So on to those tacos. There is
a sign above the ordering
counter that gave me some of
the most profound and useful
advice I have received In a long
time. "Buy Tacos.· And buy
them we did.
We started with Hannah's -
a sweetie who has worked at
Mr. Juan's only several months
but is already happy to say, "It
Is so nice to work for
something you really believe in
and promote it honestly" -
favorite, the calamari taco
{$2.50). Spicy strips of grilled
calamari with chunky tomato
salsa and guacamole. Simple
and good.
My favorite was without a
doubt the shrimp taco ($2.75);
the same marinade and
condiments as the calamari but
with some serious shrimp.
Mercifully, these ain't no Hbay"
shrimp. These shrimp are
contenders for the big time. I
unfortunately cannot say how
they compare with the lobster
tacos because the lobster
slUpment did not show up on
this particular day. But if the
lobster tacos are even in the

at it again. writing and
directing their own plays at
OCCs Summer One-Act Festival
-in their own words. "A
brilliant selection of one-act
plays produced entirely by the
talented members of the OCC
Repertory Theater Company.~
"Brilliant~ mlgbt not~ the
first adjective that comes to
mind upon viewing them, but
"provocative,· "interesting" and
"unusual" certainly apply to the
IO original pieces in the
two-weekend program.
First out of the box on
Saturday was "Box/ an
allegorical drama by Brian
Munce. Unlilce the other
selections, it comes completely
devoid of acting or backstage
credits in the program.
The play centers on a troubled
teenage girl, harangued by her
parents (represented as shadow
puppets) and driven to the verge
of suicide. When a hooded
stranger bands her a small box.
our modem-day Pandora opens
it to reJease all the forces of bell.
There's a heavy-handed religious
message here as well.
Things tum much lighter in
Don Crosby's romantic comedy
"Never Kiss on a Park Bench,"
which qe also dJrects. Here Sean
Engard, preparing to propose to ·
his girlfriend, meets the fetching
F.mily Rued in the partc and finds
he has much more in common
with her than with his intended
(Lauren Kushin). It's lightweight
stuff, but entenaining
nonetheless.
O:uistopher Durang has long
been the patron saint of OCC
drama students. His influence is
heavily felt in student Cllrls
Secor's latest work, titled "I
Never Thought I'd Consider
Cannibalism a Viable Option."
Preening ambition, lepers (yes,
lepers) and oceanic turmoil
entwine themselves in this
blackest of black comedies with

love with him. Andrew
Vondershmitt completes the

heavy stuff -a bit overextended.

but this one isn't among them.
"Date With a Stranger," by
Cllerie Vogelsteln, gives the
absurdist skills of actors Angel
Correa and Angela Lope-La
workout as the pair meet in a
cafe and proceed to Intellectually
disembowel one another. Lopez
in particular attaclcs her schizo
character with relish.
In David Ives' MForeplay,"
three couples engage in a game
of miniature golf, although you

Balboa piers early last week and
there Is a good chance that they

some pretty exciting fishing for
