The plan a lso projects that it will take about three years for the theater to achieve its full revenue potential of about $600,000 a year. "I don't think it's a sur- prise to the city that it will be several years before the theater is up and runrung financially,• City Manager Homer Bludau said. The plan shows that the theater will operate at a deficit of about $150,000 a year, but Wren said that's the way most theaters oper- ate. "Performing arts theaters lose money; they're con- stanUy in fund-raising mode. That's not unusual,· said Wren, who explained that the disparity might be covered by fund-raising by the theater's Divas auxiliary group or through board members' contributions, which a re expected to be about $125,000 a year. The benefits of the the- ater, which would showcase drama, dance, music and even film, extend far beyond its own books, Wren said. The 350-seat venue would draw theatergoers from throughout the county, shaping the economy and culture of the peninsula year-round. •It fills a void in a county that does not have perform- ing arts theaters Uus size and with the facilities we will have,· Wren said. •And it will pull spenders into the community year-round.• The theater suffered its most recent setback when planners learned that the building's basement would require about $1.4 million in upgrades before it could be Welcome to State Farm Bank9 Get a competitive retum fOf your money, with rates that iOO"ease with the amount you Invest. ANNA BmY GOLDMAN Corona del Mar A ll citizens of Newport Beach should be proud of the hard work done by our Urban Forester J ohn Conway and the city being named "Tree City USA· However, J feel that your article (·A forest grows in Newport,• April 7) did not present the problems with view . preservation in a balanced manner. This article highlighted one ocean-front homeowners "question- able" complaint about a tree block- ing his view from his bathroom. The article did not mention the four years of participation by both view and non-view homeowners with Con- way, the city's staff, the Park Beaches and Recreation Commission and the City Council in establishing the G-1 Policy in 1998. This policy provides for reforestation and trimming to protect the views of all our residents while still preserving our urban forest. While emphasizing the city's valua- tion of lhe wban forest at $63 million, the article does not point out that view homes have an increased value of $500,000 to $1 million-plus over comparably sized non-view homes on the same street. There are more than 1,000 view homes in Corona del Mar alone, easily adding well over $750 million in taxable value to the city. In City Council Districts 2, 3 and 7, view preservation is one of the major issues residents have asked to be addressed in the new updated city general plan. Unbalanced reporting over this sensitive issue is not fair to the resi- dents and city staff who have worked so hard to address this important matter. Marinapark residents need to pack and move on Here we go again. First the Crys- tal Cove people want out of lhe lease they signed ages ago and now Mari- na Park. These people can't be that naive to think these documents are meaningless. The fact that the Newport Beach City Council tS even trying to accom- modate them irritates me. They cer- tainly weri! thrilled to sign the lease 17 years ago. Did they think it would give them the right to cheap living the rest or their lives? Tell them their time is up and get on with the business of running the city. There are much more pressing issues than this one that is clearly not up for discussion. Fust. it's important to unden;tand where we are now. We all received a letter from the Newport Beach mayor more than a year ago saying the dock #was ticking" on the annexation process and it "should be complete and become effective in December, 2001." Obviously, this hasn't happened. So · I asked Assistant City Manager Dave Kiff why. He said the annexation pro- posal was filed on time, as promised, with the county's ~al Agency Forma- tion Commlss1on, whlch must approve it, and "the baU is now m their court.• He said action on 1t was delayed because the commission wanted to consider an annexation request by Costa Mesa at the same time, and that wasn't filed until October, thereby set- ting the process back several months. The conurussion has now scheduled a public workshop on this matter from 7 to 10 p.m. May 16 at Costa Mesa High School, at wtuch boundary lines and services offered to the new com- munity will be chscussed. If necessary, the commission may follow this session with a later public hearing. It could approve the application al any time during this process. Thirty days after the decision. a window will be opened for 45 days to receive objections to the annexation. If less than 25% of the registered voters ob1ect, the annexa- tion will be approved. If between 25% and 50% protest, there will be an elec- tion. U more thdn 50% register opposi- tion, the annexation will be dead. All of ttus was movmg forward at normal bureaucrauc speed until last week, when Newport Beach held a workshop session on how, wbere and when to provide a commuruty center and fire stabon within the boundanes of Santa Ana Heights -and the whole process turned emouonal The chief contributor to ttus change was Coun- cilwoman Norma Glover, who responded to some heated chlferences on these issues by telling a reporter afterward: "II people don't want lo be a part of Newport Beach, why should we push it?" A few days later, she amplified this by adding: "I'm not ir1 the mood to take on d group that does- n't want to come in. Maybe we should stop the process " Thursday, Apr1t 1 e, 2002 A7 This is not an empty threat. Not surprising, many of the restaurants have changed ownership or gone out of business. Restaurateurs will be the first to tell you that running a successful estab- lishment is difficult. and that restaurants have one of the highest failure rates of any new btJ,siness; subject to the taiteS of fickle diners, chang- iqg culinary trends and an Ul):predictable economy. With this knowledge. it's elsy to conclude that a ~urant that's been in bus1- • for 15 or 20 years must be doing something nght. aumeio•s in Corona del Mar iS:one restaurant that can 1$.ke that clabn, having now served a traditional Italian menu to loyal patrons for 17 years. In recent years, Cannelo's has been as well known. for better or worse, for its rught life as it has for its dinner menu. The lively bar features nightly entertainment. and Carmelo's late dosing time ensures that it's a popular spot for the trendy Newport crowd to meet for one last rughtcap Carmelo's occupies a prominent spot on East Coast Highway, and its red neon sign makes 1t hard to nus~. In the balmier summer months, the outdoor patio fronting the sidewalk along East Coast Highway is crowded with casual diners or those out for a pre-or post-dinner cocktail. Inside, one enters directly into the bar, a large inverted ·u· that always seems busy. The bar includes a dimly lighted seating area, and a dance floor and stage that IS the focal point for weekend revelers. Classic Italian scenes adorn the walls, and a color portrait of a young Carmelo, looking like a 1940s celebrity, adorns a promlnent spot. Beyond the main room, two smaller rooms provide a eozier setting amid a trickling fountain or the restaurant's wine collection. Consistency is a must for any restaurant's longevity, and Carmelo's begins with an owner and head chef that have bQth been at the restau- rant since day one. Carmelo Manto purchased the build- ing 17 years ago. after having worked there for six years when the restaurant had a different name. His chef, Cel- so Razo, has been with the family since the beginning, finely tuning his menus over the yea.rs. Most Italian meals begin with antipasto, appetizers in sharing-size portions crafted to open the palate while enjoying a cocktail or aperitif. Cannelo's has duplicated the custom of many restaurants in Italy, and presents an assort- ment of antipasto arrayed on a table in the center of the main dining room. Order a plate ($8.95) and your waiter will bring an assortment of treats that might include marinated mushrooms or artichoke hearts, grilled eggplant wrapped around some light ricotta cheese, or some salty cured meats. A complimentary bowl of olives on each table completes the selection. If I wanted to be picky, I might suggest that the bread served should be a heartier Italian loaf than the light French baguette ottered. As many of my readers know, one of the things I judge an Italian restaurant by is the fried calamari ($8.50). My only pasta dis- appointment was the gnocchi ($15.95), a dish that sounded promising with a sauce stud- ded with prosciutto and porci- ni mushrooms, but was ruined by heavy and overcooked dumplings. Throughout a meal at Carmelo's, you'll be well-tak- en care of by the attenbve wait staff and maitre de. I was impressed on a recent vislt when they offered, without prompting, to create a dish of two half-orders of pasta when I couldn't decide between choices. On another VlSit, they scored more points when 1 ordered a bottle of Amarone trom the wine bst. I didn't reahzed there were two selec- bons, one pnced twice that of the other, and the server brought the cheaper bottle by default when he could have easily tried to push the more expensive choice. W hen the doors ol UC Irvine first opened in the tall" of 1965, one of the first peo- ple to walk through them was Robert Cohen. Fresh out of the Yale School of Drama. Cohen had come we$t to take up his duties as a pro- fessor and director of theater. Come to thiQ.k of it, there were a lot of firsts in theater that year. That was when I began covering all things theabical for the Daily Pilot, and a couple of other young fellows in their mid-20s named David Emmes and Martin Benson set about starting their own theater. They called it South Coast Repertory. Well, 37 years have passed, and those careers that began in 1965 are still hwruning along. Emmes and Benson remain at the helm of SCR. overseeing the fifth phase of their regional the· ater showplace, and Cohen -after heading the UCI dra· ma department for a quarter of a century -now carries the title of Claire nevor pro- fessor of drama. Thirty-four years ago, Cohen mounted a Bertolt Brecht drama called "The Good Woman of Szechuan· at the only theater the uni· versity had at the time, in the Humanities building. "Instead of an all-white, all-undergraduate, all-locally recruited student cast,• Cohen said, there will be •a multicultural and interracial mix of graduate and under- graduate students selected at auditions and interviews from around the country and abroad." The central theme, of the search for a "good person• from the squalor of rural China, remains intact, as does Cohen's ideas of Brecht, which he maintains haven't changed much over the years, though "the the- ater world has absorbed them,• he said. "Indeed, since '68, Brecht's notions have so entered the main- stream that 'epic theater' has e~sentially pervaded everything from Broadway to the Royal Shakespeare Company,• Cohen e xplained. Y oung baseball coaches shoulq take a lesson from Orange Coast College Coach John Altobelli. ~ OCC baseball team's 6-5 win over two-time defending state champion Riverside Tuesday stemmed from a serious, down-to-business strategy Crom Coach •Alto.• A month ago, Alto basically drew a line in the sand. He challenged his team's character and made sure Uus season would not be doomed to underachievement. After the Pirates lost, 13-2, to Saddleback on Mdrch 16, which marked their fourth setback in five games. Alto demanded what he called a "silent practice.· He did not let any player talk, laugh or cheer during the practice. And then he said, "who's with me?" The Bucs (25-8, 10-7 in the Orange Empire Confere nce) responded with a 10·g6!11e winnjng streak that included a Sequoias Tournament title and Tuesday's win.
