attacked each other over their
ideas for city improvement was
officially shut down this week af-
ter its creators said recent crfticaJ
attention became too much to
contend with.
Janice Davidson, a community
activist and co-creator of the
Concerned Costa Mesa Citirens
Web site, said she begrudgingly
killed the Web site after it was in-
filtrated by people she labeled as
~outsiders."

'I wanted to fight it all the way because at one
time this was a great site that succeeded in
taking people from all over the city and putting
them together to find some common ground.'

bers of the Orange County Hu-
man Relations Commission who
began to monitor the site after
some allegedly intolerant posts

were publicly questioned.
Earlier this month, a small
group of activists accused three
members of the Costa Mesa Hu-
man Relations Committee of
writing what the activists consid·
ered racist and homophobic
posts on the Web site. As a result,
members of the Orange County
Human Relations Commission
-who work closely with the city
committee -Jogged on.
Officials from the county com-
mission were not in the office
Friday and could not be reached
for comment. County commis-
sion member Barbara Hunt has
said she was on the site Mas a re-
source to the Costa Mesa Human
Relations Committee" and
hoptd to "help the group over-
come some of the hurdles it's
currently facing."
While Hunt stayed out of the
cyber dialogue, her counterpart,
Bob Cerince, contributed a
handful of posts in which he dis-
cussed and debated such issues
as homosexuality and tolerance
levels. His posts received many
heated responses from regular
chat group members.

name is synony-
mous with New·
port Beach's recent
history, said the
Greenlight Issues of Allan Beek
development and
traffic are his two
main reasons for seelcing election.
"There is a considerable degree of
pressure in the city to replace a lot of
our older commercial buildings with
high-rise office buildings and I would
like to oppose that," 8eelc. said. pointing
to the airport area and the area north of
Hoag Hospital. "High-rise buildings are
a negative on every point They increase
traffic, they increase demand for filghts
at John Wayne, they make our jobs-to-
housing imbalance even worse and they
are not a reven ue producer. They cost as
much in city services as they bring in
property taxes. So there's no reason to
have them except to malce a lot of
money for the property owner."
But development is just one factor in
traffic trouble, 8eelc. said. With or with-.
out new office buildings, the city is fac-
ing some tough choices on traffic. Add·
ing overpasses. widening streets and
finding other ways to accommodate

W e have a local pharmacy that must be
the pharmacy for many locals. No
matter when I go. there is usually a
significant line or others waiting.
Last week. I needed a prescription and
chose a time that I thought wouldn't be popu-
lar. I walked into the store and was pleased to
see short lines al the regular checkout count-
ers. But as I rounded the
comer to the phannacy
section, I was met with
blanlc stares from a long
line of people.

hind her nodded and
added: "She's right When I
came in, I hoped 10 be ou1
before lunchtime. Now I'm
hoping for dinner."

Everybody in line
laughed. I thought about returning later but
decided just to wait with the jovial group.
1Wo women in line talked aboul the differ-
enl sports and camps their children were in-
volved in for the summer. As the man at the
head or the line paid for his purchase and
turned to leave, he waved to us and said:

"Good luck to you all. When I came here, I was
only 15-years old, and look at me now."
I admit that I joined in the laughter. Then
the murmuring am ong us started again. I
think that complaining can be contagious, and
soon a few others added some comments that
were witty, but not exactly positive.
I thought of a pretty funny line or my own,
but then I looked at the people behind the
counter. They looked weary. I realized that the
line was not their fault.
I'm sure they were worlting as quicltly as
possible, and they probably often bear the
brunt of something that isn't their fault. Doc-
tors can't always call in prescriptions when pa-
tients want, and sometimes insurance
changes.
When I came to the front of the line. I
thanlced the woman for her help. She looked
surprised and thanked me in return. As I left, I
sensed that God wanted me to learn a lesson
from the situation.
I had another errand 10 run before a meet-
ing, but decided that my other errand could
wait. I sat at a nearby table, closed my eyes,
and prayed that God would show me some-
thing. Then I reali.7,ed that the words "com-
plaint" and "compliment" have almost the
same leners in them, but those few letters and
those different attitudes lead to highly differ-
enl reactions and responses.

vate or keep out. Th~ name
was taken from the words of
Jesus recorded in chapter 10 of the
Gospel according to John: ·1 am the
gate. Whoever comes In by me will
be saved.•
Everyone -regardl~ of age or
faith -has been welcome at St.
James Episcopal OlUrch on Satur-
day nights for the unconventional
gatherings designed to appeal to
young people, ages 15 to 30.
"The Gate is panemed after a
service our pastor David Anderson
saw at Holy lHnJty Olurch in
Brompton, England," said Karen
Bro, a member of the Newport
Beach church and the parish's
communication director. "It looks
very different from our Sunday
morning services. The music is led
by one of our vestrymen, Eric Ev-
ans, who is the Gate's worship
leader. The music is dynamic -
let's say loud.•
The band is called Fulcrum. It
has eight members, ages 14 to 52,
playing drums, electric guitars,
bass and, occasionally, an acoustic
guitar.
"We do a variety of music,• Evans
said. "Very roclc-metal to very quiet,
one-guitar-playing-style songs. We
cover the gamut Were covering
songs by bands lilce Audio Adreoa-
lineand·Third Day."
E\lery Saturday night. you can
count on there being high-decibel
music, as wen as a popular guest
speaker. Tonight radio personality
Law-en Kitchens. co-host for the
KFSH-FM (95.9) radio FlSh Morn-
ing Show. will speak. Kltchens is
also a professor at Azusa Pacific
University and a one-time beauty
queen.
There is also prayer at the Gate,
but not in a style or church setting

"We gather in a church, but no
one wears robes and there's no
communion,'' said Pam Narlrun,

Narlcun, her sister Olaris. Evans
and Cathie Young. were active in
the start of Gate.
Both of the Narlcuns found it dif-
ficult to meet people their ages at
church. Olurches had youth
groups for kids through high school
age and groups for adult singles
ages 30 and older, but the women
found little offered to older teens
and those who are twentysome-
thing.
"I thought the Gate would be a
great opportunity to fill a void I
felt," Olarls Narkun said.
She said it provides a place for
her to worship and to pray, as well
as to meet people, share pizza ana
simply bang ouL She sees the Gate
as a fun and comfortable place for
young people lilce her to approach
God in their own ways, a place
where they can bring their ques-
tions. their past hurts and their
hunger for the truth.
"People our age· are constantly
searching for peace of mind, love.
acceptance and answers,· Pam
Narlcun said. "We have all seen a
lot We've been through a lot The
world today is really different from
the way It was when our parents
were our age. We have grown up
fast When you have to worry about
guns in schools and kids getting
lcidnapped, you start to take life

generation."

businesses, restaurants and bars
and bands out fliers at the beach.
And the young people come. Af-
ter the music and the prayers, after
the guest speaker has wrapped it
up, they mingle on the patio of the
church's courtyard, just in.side the
church building's gate. They share
pizza, good strong coffee. chocolate
and other sweets.

At SL James Olurch, the gate Is
always open.
I returned 10 the pharmacy this week, and
prayed for the right attilude if there was a long
line, which there was. I began taJlcing with a
charming woman behind m e. For the next few
minutes she talked about her excitement
about heading off to an Angels game soon. She
was filling a prescription to help with her
rheumatoid arthritis. She had an amazing atti-
lude, and I complimented her on that.
"Others are far worse that r am, dear," she
said.

I smiled and replied, "God has given us so
much to be thanlcful for."
The woman agreed and we chaned until it
was my tum at the counler.
If complaining can be conlagious, maybe
complimenting can 100.

City Council regarding the zon·
ing of the most western part of
the dty, saying it was too soon to
make such a large decision.
Because of the size of the com-
mittee, which has nearly 80
members. the votes were made
with raised bands. Officials said a
large majority was not ready to
give the council direction on the
issue.

they wouldn't even let us talk
about it .. Bever said.
Bever was one of nine mem-
bers who sent a letter to city offi-
cials asking that rezoning of the
bluffs be officially placed on the
Community Redevelopment
Agency Action Committee
Agenda. The letter requested the
committee ta.lee a formal vote on
whether to advise the council to
begin the process of rezoning the
West.side bluffs.
Rezoning of the Westside
blufti bas been a hot topic at
City HaD for years. with advo-
cates aigWna that the portion of
the dty doeest to the ocean -
and with ocean vlews -lhould
be dedicated to single-family
homee, not Industrial buildings.
In February, Planning Depart-
ment statfen asked the council
for direction on whether the re·
zoning process should be further
studied. The council voted to al-
low the redevelopment commit-
tee to weigh In on the issue.
Bever said he and other mem-
bers wanted to initiate the dis-
cussion to get a formal recom-
mendation to the council to ex-
pedite the &oog-term procds.
Their efforts, however, were sty-
mied. -
Fewel said he was not neces-
sarily against the Idea of rezon-
ing, just the effort to force a
qujck decisjon.
"Too many people were
grossly misinformed about the
consequences of such an ac-
tion," Fewel said, "and when
there is that kind of misinfonna·
tion in a group thia large, the re-
sults of a vote could be danger-
ous."

safe on campus,

matic drop in burglary and
petty theft at Orange Coast
College fueled a 32% de-
crease in overall crime on
campus this year, officials
announced Friday.
College officials aedit the
drop from 173 total crimes
Jast year to 117 this year to
stepped-up security patrols.
"It's not easy to break into
a car in our parking lot be·
cause we have a security
presence there virtually all
the time," said Jim Carnett,
a spokesman for the college.

Violent crimes on cam-

every year since 1997, no
murders or rapes were re-
ported. There was one sex-
ual assault In the _past year,
none in the previous year
and two each for the two
previous years.
Robbery was down from
last year, with one case re·
ported In the 2001-02
sch<><?l year compared with
three in 2000-0 I and two in
1999·00.
Vehicle thefts also fell
substantially, .from 15 in
2000-01 to 10 this year.
One hate crime was re-
ported this year, compared
with none in the four previ·
ous years.
Burglaries were down
considerably, from 44 in
2000-01 to 16 in the most

A quick-thinking neighbor ex-
tinguished a fire in a Balboa
Peninsula apartment Friday
afternoon.
Joe Bardes was getting ready to
take a boat ride about l :30 p.m.
when he smelled something
burning. He ran to the apart-
ment building nen door in the
2100 block of East Balboa Boule-
vard. 'With a cell phone In one
hand, he grabbed a garden hose

that's news. I state this at the risk

this type of crime, no distinction

They are all horrible, and the

My visit to the memorial was a
working one. Interviewing
visitors for a magazlne story. I
was struck by the simple

them declared that they were
going to take some sort of action

misplaced, and it pjlins me to
think that children will have yet
another set of rules' by which to
play because of the overreaction

Autistic children the focus
of tonight's 'Night of Caring'

When· Usa Ackerman's son,
Jeff, was diagnosed with autism
when he was 2 'h, the frustra-
tion of dealing with the condi-
tion was compounded by her
inability to find a doctor who
could treat it
After trying seven local doc-
tors, Aclcerman bit the Internet
and found a doctor in Florida
who was highly recommended
by other parents of autistic chil-
dren.
Ironically the next week. Ack-
erman ran into the doctor, Jerry
K.a.rtzinel, at an autism confer-
ence and sought him out.
"He ~t with myself and my
husband," she recalled. "He
held both of our hands and
said, 'Can I do anything for you
two?' ... We thought he meant,
'Do we have autism? He said,
'No, how's your marriage?' We
said, 'This is the worst event of
our lives -to have someone
say that your son will be institu-
tionalized.' After two hours, we
hugged bim five times. My bus·
band and I bo~ were crying."
The emotional meeting set
the stage for Kartzinel to treat
Jeff. It also in.spired Ackerman
to join forces with other loc8J
parents to pay for K.artzinel to
Oy out to Orange County for a
few days and treat multipJe pa-
tients. ·
Tonight, Ackerman is co-
chairing a wine-tasting party in
Newport Beach to raise funds
for Kartzinel's future visits and
to pay for bis treatment of 15
local autistic children whose
families can't afford the care.
"What (the families) get is an
option to see a doctor who's not
accepting any new patients,"
Ackerman said. "There's a 400-
patient waiting list.~
Autistic symptoms include
displaying abnormal behaviors,
such as staring into space for
hQUrS, throwing uncontroQ.able
tantrums, showing n·o interest
in people (including parents)
and pursuing repetitive activ-
ities with no apparent purpose,
according to the Autism Re-
search Institute.

"He wasn't talking before,"
she said. "Now he's talking.

I think we've all suffered.
There'll be no such thing as a
great park.
And we lcnow that this land
is going to be auctioned off to
the highest bidders, who are
in the pockets or the people
that made this happen.
It's really a horrendous
thing for those of us that did
want the airport there be-
cause we know we're going to
need it, but I refer to Joseph
Bell's article:

umn July 25 was right on
concerning the El Toro deba-
cle. Bell hit the nail on the
head saying the anti-airport
guys didn't win the vote, the
pro guys lost 1t with the help
of some of our hJgh·pro8Je
politicos that ran like fleeing
rats when it looked like po-
litical futures were at stake!
Not only has thls cost we
cltlzens a ton of dough, much
of which Is unaccounted for,
but isn't It Interesting that the
Great Park suddenly ha s
turned into a huge develop-
ment opportunity? The resi-
dential developers are
smacking their lips and ready
to strike whenever possible
to add zillions of homes.
This, coupled with the
commercial guys ready with
their plans for hundreds of
thousands of square foot
buildings! Give me a break.
The pressure on our free-way and toll road system wi1J
be an unbelievable joke In
just a few short years. folks.
Using land for an airport
will seem llke chump change
compared to what's ahead.

feat those that duped them

the ciry of Irvine to manage
the process? They are studied
the world over for their
planned community that is
so successful.
For Bell to use the term,
·developers, Cox's private
sector· is a ruse.
Citizens of Newport Beach
had to take back their city
from developers with the
Greenlight Initiative as the
Ciry Council was in the hip
pockets of the developers.
Get over it, it's over and
done with, and our entire
county will be the better for
it.
Look inside your OVf/I tent,

outlet that I know of in Orange
County, other than getting into the

show for an oil piece titled "Ready
in Waiting." She also was awarded
juror's choice and honorable
mention ribbons for a second

"When I saw the three ribbons, I
started crying," said
Weatherholt-Bernhardt, of being
•I'm returning to it late in the
game," said the 31-year-old, who
didn't make anything for almost 10
years after taking her first ceramics
class in college. "But there are
people who are starting even later
than I did."

A father of a 15-year·old,
Leedom was inspired with the
• idea for the book -which
follows a group of multiethnic
children from nothingness to
happy peace to strife and back
again -in part by his sojourns
in Hawaii. The people there, he
said, have learned to live in
harmony with one another and
nature.
Leedom brought the idea 10
Adams. with whom he had
written a previous project.
The biggest challenge in
· writing the book, Adams said,
· was ta.Icing someone else's words
. and knitting together.
"It's like being a gardener,"
· said the second-degree black
belt in karate. "You either have
the seeds to malce a garden grow
or something pops up. It takes
nurturing and constant
refinement."

yon Country Oub didn't have enough
pressure with the largest of the two gal-
leries and playing on its home course,
the pro-am team of Director of Golf Bob
Lovejoy and men's club champion
Danny Lane captured Jones Cup ill in
th.rilling fashion Friday after a shaky
start.
Heading into Jones Cup Ill, a double
or triple bogey had never been re-
corded. Newport Beach Counay Oub
engulfed seven bogeys in the inaugural
Jones Cup and Santa Ana Counay Oub
caused four last year in the better ball or
partners format.
But Big Canyon, with its hilly golf
course and severe greens, tripped up its
own team on the second hole as Lovejoy
found the creek and Lane hit out of
bounds as the hosts, as weU as defend-
ing champions, carded a triple bogey 8.
Going three shots down seemed like
an insurmountable deficit considering
the day's competition, format and golf
course, but Lovejoy and Lane rallied
smoothly, calmly and at times miracu-
lously as Big Canyon shot 2-under-par
70 and finished with a two-shot victory
over runners-up Santa Ana and 2000
champion Mesa Verde Counuy Oub,
which tied at even par. Newport Beach.

nail-biting par-5 finishing hole, double
bogeyed 18 and shot 3-over 75.
"I knew I could make birdie at 18 if I
laid up. but I just hit a horrible layup
shot." said Newport Beach head pro

Lane, a former standout Laguna
Beach High football quarterbaclc and
minor league baseball player in the
Montreal chain, thrived in the spotlight
during crunch time and birdied two of
the last three holes, including the dog-
leg-right 518-yard par-5 No. 18 in front
of his home fans with a 20-foot pun.
The roar of the greenside gallery of
about 100 even impressed Newport
Beach amateur Jeff Wright.
"At 18 on Danny's birdie shot. when
you heard that whole gallery. you could
really feel the energy. ft really culmi-
nated the whole event for me. It was
first class all the way," said Wright. who
played in his first Jones Cup.
Lane. also playing ln his first Jones
Cup, had the entire field on his tail at 18.
when Big Canyon tepped to the tee
with a slim one-stroke edge over Santa
Ana. which was at even, while Newport
Beach and Mesa Verde were both at l-
over and very much in the thick of

On Friday afternoon at The
Balboa Bay Oub Racquet Oub,
Newport Beach's Kaes Van't Hof,
the No: 2 seed in boys l&. dug
deep and pulled out a miracu-
lous showing of tennis to defeat
Encinitas' Kyfe McDonald, 5-7,
7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3), to win the
boys l8s singles title in the War
by the Shore Junior Tennis Oas-
sic.
Even with two tiebreakers, it
was the second set that seemed
to change the momentum of the
match as between 25 and 35
spectators huddled on the pado,
looking down at the tenni5 they
saw on Stadium Court
Down one set and 5-2 in the
second set with McDonald serv-
ing. Van' t Hof rebounded from
being down, 40-30, to force two
deuce points before McDonald
double faulted, allowing Van't
Hof to break.
Van't Hor would break two
more times In the second set.
That, coupled with holding his

"I was going for it too much in
the beginning and missing it
long," Van't Hof said. "I defi-
nitely tried to sneak in when I
saw (McDonald) about to slice."
VWl't Hof broke McDonald's
serve once in the third set as he
started putting a little more
speed on his own serve.

In the girls l4s singles, sec-
ond-seeded Nelly Radeva from
Costa Mesa gave the top-seeded
Ivey all she could handle in a
morning match, but lost to the
Monarch Beach resident, 7-5,
6-4.
The War by the Shore tourna-
ment marted the first tourna-
ment the I I-year-old Radeva has
played in the girls l 4s.
After the match both Ivey and
Radeva smiled and talked as
they walked off the court with
their tennis bags around their
shoulders.
"I just played my game and
did weU against her," Radeva
said. "(lvey) was confident since
she won the first set and went
off that."
ln the gins 16s singles final,
Newport Beach's 12-year-old
Alex.a Glatch, gave Coto de Ca-
za's Lauren Jones a much
tougher second set, but still lost
to.Jones, 6-0, 7·5.
Glatch broke Jones' serve
three times in the second set.,
hitting a backhand-return win-
ner to go up 40-30 at 4-2 in the
second set. Glatch took the
game when Jones double
faulted.
·1 think I could have served a
little bener, • Glatch said. ·1 tried
to keep the unforced errors
down and keep moving hoping
she would make unforced errors
to get back in the match.·
Glatch often strode to the
service line to hit a backhand·
drop shot to either comer of the
court.
In boys 14s doubles, top-
seeded Kurt Wheeler and Jake
Plemlng were 6-3, 6-4, winners
over second-seeded Andy Gerst
and Andy Magee.

WHEREAS. the Corona del Mar Business Improvement District wu
estabhshed in 1996 pursuant to the Parking and Business Improvement Area
Law of 1989, California Streets and Hlehways Code. Section 36500 et seq.,
(hereinafter the ·Act*). which requires an annual report to be flted and
approved by the City Council for each fiscal year; and
WHEREAS. the Advisory Board has prepared an Annual Report for the
2001 -2002 fiscal year which Is on Ille in the Oftlce of the City Clerk; and
NOW. THEREFORE. the City Council of the City of Newport Beach resolves
as follows: Section I The City Council hereby declares the intention to levy assessments
for the Corona del Mar Business Improvement District for the fiscal year
September l , 2002 to Auaust 31, 2003 pursuant lo the Act. Such benefit
assessment shall be as follows:
A. Banks and financial institutions that are eumpt from City business
license regulations shall be assessed $500 per year;
8. Insurance a11encin that are exempt from City business license reaulations
shall be assessed $250 per year;
C. Persons operatina one of the followine types of businesses as en
independent contractor in an establishment owned by another person shall
be eompt from this assessment:
I. Ha11 stylists
2. Nail technicians
3. Real estate aeents
0. The assessment for all other businesses within the District shall be
150 percent of the annu1I business license tax as es tablished pursu1nt to
Chapter 5.08 of the ~unicipal
