When the double.booked Pablo Cruise canceled his Wednesday performance at Fashion Island's Summer C.Oncert Series at the last minute, vocalists Gary Wright and Al Stewart agreed on Monday to take Cruise's place. HWe've never had this happen before," said Shayne Voorheis, director·of sales and marketing for Fashion Island. "But they were two strong artists that happened to meet.the crite- ria of what we're looking for: They appeal to a large audience, it's enjoyable mu- sic, and it brings back a lot of memories." Wright, who gave a quick interview Monday, will per- form hits including "Dream Weaver," "Love is Alive" and "Really Want to Know You" this week. The 59-year-old per- former said he feels fortu- nate that the songs became "classics" that everyone re- members. Wright began his musical career in 1966 in Germany, after finishing his graduate studies at Frei University. A year later, he formed his group Spooky Tooth. whose albwn "Lt's All About" garnered praise enough to launch a touring frenzy in Europe. Spooky Tooth's second al- bum brought them to the United States, where they played with the likes of Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones. Wright went solo for a while in the first half of the '70s and worked as a pro· ducer for different artists, as well as spending some time as a keyboardist for George Harrison. They played to- gether on H All Things Must Pass". and many subse- quent albums. HHe was one of my best friends," Wright said of the late Beatle. READERS RESPOND Backyards should not face rules AT ISSUE: Three residen ts aren't too pleased that Costa Mesa wants to manqate what's on privat e property. T be idea that anyone can teU me what I can't put in my backyard leaves me blind ("Residents uniting against Qty Hall," Thursday). lt is just wrong telling me that I can't part my legally registered recreational vehicle or inoperable car anywhere on my property. Mayor Unda Dixon and "her" followers need to give this a break. I support Councilman Gary Monahan with his apprehensions at this time. Maybe later after the votes are counted, we'U know who cares from where the community roots are derived. PETER GRANDIA Mesa Del Mar I feel what you do in your yard is your own business and not the city's as long as it is not illegal, a health ha7.ard or a safety haz.ard. I have lived in Costa Mesa for the past 44 years, and now I feel that I will have to move just to keep my freedom. RICHARD RITSCHKE Costa Mesa I tuned in LO the Planning Commission meeting July 22 to hear the members going on ad nauseam about inspections for rental properties in our city based 6n a Santa Ana model The plan was to inspect aU rental properties in the city and charge a fee to the owner to do so. These inspections would have nothing to do with complaints or overt violations, just as a routine inspection. nus is just another example of the attempted "lrvine-ization" of Costa Mesa. I have lived in Costa Mesa for the last 32 years. I own three properties on the F.astside, so I assure you that if I chose to live in Irvine or South County or the walled cities of Huntington Beach, I could, but I support individual freedom and accept that if I want to enjoy my private property as I see fit, I must accept my neighbor's right to do the same. I am not quite sure when things started changing. maybe it was back when we started regulating garase sales. How many more code enforcement officers did we hire to do that? Every day I see the code enforcement cars in my neighborhood, it feels like the secret police. And there are so many new regulations all the time, no one could keep up with them. Six months ago. El Toro plan won't be able to pay for itself T he city of Irvine and the Navy's plans for the Conner El Toro Marine Corps Air Station property are both premature and deceptive ("Pro-airport forces blast Irvine. Navy agreement." Thursday). Premature. because WJtil the lawsuit against~ w is decided. the zoning for that property might not be ronsi.1tent with the so-called Qeat Park plan. The plan is deceptive because, just like Measure W. it does not have concrete ways to pay for the projects without using public tax funds. Does Irvine really expect developers to pay top dollar for the land they are allowed to develop and believe they will then provide the funding and maintenance costs for an enormous public project as well? I don't thinlc so. Olances are taxpayers will be asked to foot the bill, and if they don't there goes the elusive park plan. EDfTOR'S NOTE: BONNIE O'NEIL Newport Beach Bonpie O'Neil is a member of the Airport Worldng Group. Great Parle plans for Fl Toro property cannot be trusted I think the city of Irvine and the Navy's plans for the closed El Toro Marine base are an affront to all citizens who will curse the day the El Toro international airport went down in defeaL We don't need more housing, more retail stores or more offices to increase the already impossible traffic situation . Nor do we need a Great Park that will not be used by people outside of South County. Also, the problem of the contaminated ground will require a great amount of money to reduce the danger from this contamination. Who will pay, if not all of Orange County, mostly those who will not get the benefit of their tax money. F.xpenses of an airport would gladly have been bome by most of us who would have looked forward to an international airport in our baclcyard. It COMMUNITY COMMENTARY would have taken much of the pressure olf LAX. and most likely would have paid for itself in a short time, from cargo business and passengers from all over Orange County. The federal government and the Navy should have used their influence to make the airpon a reality, instead of giving in to the selfish South County ze~ots. I am very disappointed that the planning for this airpon was so badly handled. I am against any plans that Irvine and the Navy conjure up. and I am strongly in favor of overturning their plans and going for the airport, even at this late date. ELEANORE TRIGHER Costa Mesa Columnist should label himself irresponsible W hat is with columnist Steve Smith and his Family Tune columns? His column with his "advice" to high school graduates about not going to college because college is for suckers and to send graduation announcements to anyone you know, and even those you do not know, because they will send you money, and other rather unusual items was bad enough ("A curt list of tips for graduates," June 22). Now, in his column Saturday about Samantha Runnion's kidnapping and murder, he calls those he interviewed "ignorant" because they planned to take action to prevent Samantha's fate from happening to their own-children ("No reason to let fear tear you apart." Saturday). Even if the number of incidents of stranger abduction is low, it is irresponsible to not educate and warn children of potentially dangerous situations. Smith seems to believe this is only done with fear and aruciety, not with love and concern. Maybe he should interview the Lomita residents whose son was almost abducted by a LETIER TO THE EDITOR stranger on Saturday. I would venture to guess that if Smith surveyed his readers and asked how many had been "offered candy," asked to help find a lost pet, or merely followed by a stranger. or experienced a "close caU; he would receive a surprisingly high number of responses. It's not unusual to see mullet jump in Newport Bay. but to see so many fish explode into the air in such a concentrated area is something that this outdoor writer has never witnessed. It appears that good fishing off the coast should continue throughout the summer. There were spots of 70-degree water between the islands, lots of bait and clean water should combine to keep schools of tuna around Most likely mullet are doing this show of acrobatic maneuvewrs as part of an annual mating ritual, but whatever the reason. it's worth talcing a short drive to see the dancing waters. f'tiOTOS BY JM NEIMIEC I OAllY Pl.OT Ryan Lawter of Bay Shores has big smile after catching his first Albacore on the yacht 0Reel Satty• off the east end of San Clemente Island. The fish weighed in at 16 pounds. _Lega_!
