David Padilla. 40, the captain and owner of the boat, was arrested Thursday night by the harbor patrol on suspicion of operating the boat while being intoxicated. Newport Beach police officers arrested one of Padil- la's passengers after he left the boat on suspicion of being· drunk in public. The removal tested the mettle of the aane operators and ttucking crew as they tried to get the boat off the beach while inOicting as little damage as possible. By 6:30 p.m., they had succeeded. Frankly, I'd often rather deny some things I've said or done rather than come clean with them. My column a few weeks ago was about me inadvertently filling my car with racing gasoline. Obviously this was nothing tragic, just dumb and ..--------. fairly costly on my part. Rather than avoiding telling others, I've learned that God does something interesting when I confess my faults or failings. ln some cases. it leads to something light like laughter, but in other instances it has led to freedom, forgiveness or feeling closer to others. More than a month ago, I enjoyed a fun, albeit unusual, day that involved moving furniture and a slight fender-bender. The day also included a stressful situation with friends, but there were highlights too. Christ Lutheran, which has been without a minister of music for eight years, hired a full-time person in the posidon to replace the many volunteers who had alternated In the role. "Worship Is a very important ingredient," said Steven Hayes, lay minister at Christ Lutheran. "Vile felt the need to enhance our worship. Henry will bring it to life." The 51-year-old Kogler joins the church during a time of renovadon. The congregadon now worships in a gymnasium because the worship facility is being remodeled -a project that will last another six to nine months-and updated with a better sound system and video technology. .. , . Actually they were tight and uncomfortable. I finally decided to go to my chiropractor and explained the situation and my symptoms. Among the assorted news was an alert that the city was giving away trees. In an effort to beautify an otherwise good- looking town, the city, for a lim- ited time. is handing our free trees. The program seems to be pretty popular. We've put in our order and won't get the trees un- til mid-September because of high demand. The city's Joe Bo- gart has been instrumental in dispelling any myths about gov- ernment workers. He is prompt, courteous and knowledgeable, according to Cay, who has been working with h1m to get the trees. READERS RESPOND REBUTTAL Greenlight preserves city's quality of life CHOC clinic loses another round By Adele •nd Mel M•nn The Daily Pilot editorial titled "Dunes sale a sad ending" (June 28) revealed the Pilot's implied attack against the Greenligbt law. It's as if Greenlight killed the Dunes hotel ~roject. There was no Greenllgbt election on the Dunes hotel. But it was obvious that the many citizens throughout Newport Beach appeared to be adamantly opposed to the proposed Dunes hotel, especially those residents in the vicinity of the hotel. Fortuna•ely, the project died. The Greenllght law pennits Newport Beach residents to vote, "yes" or "no." on large-scale developments that could create even more • burdensome traffic. The rejected Koll project, for example, was the first instance where residents could vote on a large-scale development Almost 65% of the electorate opted to maintain our quality of life rather than allow construction of this traffic-generating high-rise office building. Without resident advocate groups such as Greenlight, the residents in Orange County could ultimately expect to be victims of unbearable traffic levels such as those now present and growing in Los Angeles County. The Metropolitan 'Jhmsit Authority in Los Angeles predicts that by 2025, rush-hour traffic highway speeds in Los Angeles County will drop by 50%. Let's not allow this traffic nightmare to happen in Orange County. As residents, we should continue to support Green- light's objectives. Four seats on the Newport Beach City Council are up for election in November 2002. Soon, we will hear from the candidates. At first glance, it appears the Olildren's Hospital of Orange CoWlty and Newport-Mesa school distric;t-sponsored health clinic on the Rea campus is a good way to provide free care to the students (A Ooser Look, "Rea plan becomes center of debate," Monday). A closer look reveals that this is not the case. The clinic will be serving all young people from zero to 17 (21 for chronically ill) that need not be students of Rea or any other district school. The people served need not even be residents of the school district, or even citiZens or legal resi- dents of this country. With all the talk about upgrading the quality of life on the Westside, this clinic will work against that by attracting people from across the county looking for a hand- out, and not living in or contrib- uting to Westside's community. CHOC and the district have attempted to ramrod this project through with no input from the Neighborhoods throughout Newport Beach are being invited to join- forces· with thousands of communitjes nationwide for the 19th Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention eventl Residents are asked to lock their doors, tum on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors. ~ will be providing food, drinks and we'll all have some good summer fun! · Westside oommunlty. Charities abound here on the Westside. However, enough is eoough. When we begin to endanger our own schoolchildren to ben- efit all those from surrounding cities, we cry, "foul." If CHOC must locate another free clinic in Costa Mesa, at Least let it be placed in an underserved area Eastside or north side might be fine; ask the folks in those areas. Those of us on the Westside have already done our duty. CHRISllAN ERIC Costa Mesa I am writing in opposition to the idea of locating the CHOC medical clinic on the grounds of the Rea school on Hamilton Street Why place a medical clinic in the middle of a residen· dal neighborhood on an el- ementary school ground? We need to be protecting our children from strangers entering the school area, not adding un- known persons visiting school grounds and adding traffic to an already busy street. JAN PETERSON Costa Mesa While the writer's difficulty following the final outcome of the school board's deliberations on the proposed CHOC/district free clinic at Rea school is understandable, her conclusion is incorrect ("'lhlstees waver on Rea health center,n July 18). Rather than proposing to postpone the clinic issue Mfor the discussion by the full board," as the Pilot repprted, trustee Mar- tha Fluor can be seen and heard on the video stating, and I para- phrase., that the board needs two members, that this is going to die right here if the board doesn't get two members to bring this forward to the August age~da. Fluor repeated her plea sev- eral times and received no re- sponse, at which point she changed her plea to: "I rieed one member to bring this forward, I need one member." Board member Jim Ferryman then re- plied: "I can go with you on that." After falling to convince two of her peers on the board to agree to bring the Rea clinic issue up for later discussion, Fluor, a board member who had appro- priately excused herself from voting on the issue, then made a motion to keep it alive. If Fluor's voting on an issue is inappropriate, wouldn't a mo- tion regarding the issue also be inappropriate? This action is especially trou- bling because Ruor admJts the issue was dead at that point, and apparently no two members were willing to resurrect it. Fluor was also vociferous in her lobbying for the clinic, and this observer wonders if lobby. ing also constitutes a conflict of interest. Given the actions taken by Fluor, this observer believes that the issue should be allowed to die for Jack of suppon. The proposed clinic at Rea is simply the wrong idea in the wrong place. I doubt many Pilot readers would want a Cree clinic in their neighborhoo$. She won the I Os as a 9-year-old and also lost in the I 2s title match last year. "I played well, but I should've been more consistent," Radeva said of Friday's 8 a.m. final against Jones. "Sh e didn't miss a lot and I made most of the errors." In the boys 18s final, 14-year-old Rob- ert Khoury was on the wrong end of a huge momentwn swing in the first set against McCullough. With Khoury serving at 3-4 and 30-40, he called a baseline re- turn by McCullough out. But an umpire overruled it and awarded the game to McCullough. whose inspired play there- after carried him to the win. "It was really tight in the first set," Khoury said. "But I was just destroyed af- ter that call. I was so upset. The ball was dearly out by two feet. I should've just played tennis, but I was too distracted with the calls."
