Coast Community College District's s plan to raise $370 million h as one notable precedent. Deirdre Newm•n Daily Pilot NEWPORT-MESA -The goal for officials with the Coast Com- munity College District during the next few months can be nar- rowed to a single number: 55. That number represents the majority vote they need from residents living within their dis- trtct to pass a $370-million bond to fund a host of facility im- provements at the three district campu.5eS. District officials say the bond is necessary to renovate the auditorium in the Moore Theater at Orange Coast College, mod- ernize dle library at Golden West College and construct a perma- nent building for Westminster Leaming Center at Coastline Community College. A CLOSER LOOK wj see the need at the ground level," said Peter Green -who has been teaching at Golden West for more than three dec- ades -at the July meeting. •The air condJdonlng and heat are an· tiquated, It's extremely energy in- efficient I would like to see the district look as good as it did when I came 30 years ago." Mary Boticella, chief executive officer of Huntington Beach Hos- pital, said the bond could be a huge boon for the nursing pro- gram at Golden West "The nursing profession and hospitaJ.s are aitically in need or an increasing number of trained nurses like those trained by com- munity colleges," BodceUa said at the July meeting. w(The bond) would provide new and Im- proved buildings and improve the number of nurse trainees by 50-80% at Golden West" If the bond passes, Orange Coast College would ~ive ap- proximately $199 million; Golden West College would get about $95 million; Coastline Community College would take in about $66 million; and the dis- trict would receive approxi- mately $9 million for replacing temporary buildings on all three campuses. Just how big that Mif' is re· mains to be seen. The board of lruStees ap- proved placing the bond on the November ballot on JuJy 31. and while It already has considerable support in the community. the next few months are critical to gamer the needed 554Jfi majority vote. The district is now in the proc- ess of putting together an Inde- pendent campaign committee that will further educate the community on exactly what the bond will be used for. Lolita Harper Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -Planning commis· sioners want to introduce a nationwide energy-saving program to the city to power up their efforts to begin new conservation techniques. Planning commissioners have out- lined energy conservation as one or their chief goals and are ~ed to· night to make a recommendation to the City Council to pass a law that en- courages new city buildings to takt: part in the Environmental Protection ""- Agency's Energy Star program. Private buildings would also be encouraged to take part but participation would not be mandatory. ON TIE RIGHT TRACK • While audiences enjoyed watching the romantic lifestyle Lopez ltved while playing a wedding planner in the 2001 movie, Kade Zitar enjoys living that lifestyle everyday of her life. But in keeping with the romantic theme of her profession and adhering to, what she refers to as, a form of suj>ersdtion, ahe watches that movie before attendmg every wed~ she's planned. And so far, it hasn't steered her wroog. "lfyou're~ good wedding planner you're not surprised," Zitar said. "I haven't had a situation where a bride tw left unhappy and I've been really proud of all the wedding's I've done." Having worked various jobs in the wedding industty over the past five years, Zitar now worb as a wedding planner with Orea Yacht Owters In Newport Beach. PlANNNG AHEAD Most of her~ are aboard yachts out on the water. A .location that has sdmd up aeatMty among her clienls keeping her ~dy on her toes. "Generally, a lot of people still want to follow tradition." she said. "But on a yacht. a lot of people want to go away from tradition." However, 1ltar has noticed thatmostofthedifferences occur in similar segments of the wedding. How the bride ls given away, the bride's clothing and how the wedding toast ls given remain the three most frequently altered portions of a wedding. The hardest part of planning a wedding stays the same - pulling all the pieces together. "It's like putting a puzzle together," she said. "And you're never bored because everyone bas a dlJierent idea for their special day ... TAKING THE TENSION But Zitar tries to make every bride's vision a reality. While that places a lot of pressure on her shoulders, the wedding planner also consumes the pressure the bride feels as well. .. A wedding planner is someone to take the tension off the bride, someone to talce all their worries away," she said. "You're her financial advisor. her shrink and then you become her best friend, which Is nice." Being involved In such an lmportant time in a couple's life, Zilar has become appreciative of the role she has been able to play and al the rewards that It brings. "You're woddng with people that are so ecstatic to be getting manied," she said *I've become friends with a lot of my brides.• ONE STIU TO COME At 23 years old, Zitar hasn't yet had the opportunlty to plan her own wedding. but has acquired some great ideas from each of the weddinp she's planned. ln fact, by just staying in the backdrop during each wedding she has learned how to sit back and enjoy the event as a whole. And just wat~g all her hard work and planning come to fruition in a day her cllents will never forget Is all she could ever ask for. "It's an incredible feeUng; .. she $aid.
