OCEAN CLEANUP 'Bleaching begins of waste water The Orange County Sanitation District's move complies with a deadline imposed by the regional water-quality board. Paul Clinton Daily Pilot NEWPORT BF.ACH -The Orange CoWlty Sanitation District began bleach- ing its waste water Monday as a contro- versial first-step effort to dean up millions of gallons of daily discharge off the city's shores. • •Chlorine bleach and the de-chlorina- tion chemical are being used as a short- term option to reduce bacteria,• said Usa Murphy, the district's spokeswoman. ·The community called out for an immediate improvement to the quality of the (waste water). This is the sanitation district's an- swer to that call.· By implementing the treatment, the sanitation district met a Monday deadline, set by the Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board at a July 19 meeting. District officials say the move should re- move their sewage plume from the lineup of potential offenders bringing bacteria into the surf zone. Sanitation district managers are using an industrial-strength bleach that's about three times as powerful as the type found tucked beneath most kitchen sinks. They'll use between lB,000 to 20,000 gal- lons per day, Murphy said. Every day. the district releases 234 mil- lion gallons of partially treated waste wa- ter into the ocean from an outfall pipe on the ocean Ooor 4~ miles out to sea off the Santa Ana River mouth. On July 17, the district's board approved stepped-up treatment for the discharge on a 13-12 vote after months of debate and dis<:u.aion over a federal waiver the dis- trict had that allowed it to skirt Oean Wa- ter Act rules. Chlorination ls an extra mea- aure. Murphy said the district bleaches the sewage with the powerful agent. then uses a d~chlorlnation chemical to remove the substance, which is extremely hannful to eealife. "Ught Beams" will focus on light sources. Projects include working in plein air watercolors and building metallic clay works. Beginning Monday are "Poems and Pictures," where children can learn · about wo.-ds and pictures melding ln art, and "What a Scene!" -in which students will learn to draw a scene or character while hearing classical music from a theatrical work. This activity correlates with the art of storyboard designer Dan Sayre Groesbeck., whose works are currently at the museum. Some enrollment spots are still open and fees vary. Of having her son learn art at a real art venue, Eric's mother, Terry, said the classes afford the young artist a specific yet thorough education. "To live a really good life." "What we're trying to do is expose them to how real artists are, all the different ways artists can create art and also express themselves," Katz said. •As we see in the biennial, there ·1 think it gives him a really good idea of what's out there and what he can aspire to if he decides to pursue a career in art." she said. VERDICT Continued from Al dogs, specilically my deg. I have a beagle. The trouble with beagles is that they don't understand a dog's place. As enthusiastic as I am about dogs, I make a distinction between humans and dogs -but my beagle doesn't. There is not a single sofa or chall' in the house that is not hers. You know they are hers because she kicks off all the pillows and cushions before settling in. AB for the bed, I don't know bow such a small dog can take up such a large space, but I find myself clinging to the edge to keep from falling off. The item that nine members or the group wanted to vote on at the last meeting (rezoning the Whittier blufJs to residential) is probably a good idea for the Westside. Sure, I'd love to have my pet ideas (a major grocery store at 19th and Placentia; relocating the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen) adopted right away too. If I could do it myself, I would. But I can't do any of those things myself. We need to move for~ ward as a group. and then we need to be able to convince the City Council to act on the ideas that are overwhelmingly supported by thls group. Peninsula's Main Street ficus trees should be replaced I am writing in response to the (Saturday) artide regarding the removal or the ficus trees on Main Street on the Balboa Peninsula \Talks on trees taking place"). I am a merchant and resident of Main Street. I live above my business at 104 Main St., so the trees directly affect my life on a daily basis. The ficus trees have caused loss of business due to having to dose and have (plumbers! try to unclog our drains. They have pulled out huge chunks of tree trunk every time they come - about three or four times a year. Not only is this costly in terms or business. but It disrupts our life when we can't Oush our toilets or take showers. I am strongly tn support of replacing the trees and know that if the "tree buggers" had them in their frontyard they would feel the same. I have lived in Balboa for 25 years and have had to fight with the trees and the mess they make for that long. There is no feasible reason to keep them. Mentioned in tNs article were plans for the Rm Elementary health clinic to handle 9,000 annual vi.sits by its third year. I believe that ls a conservative estimate. It is unconscionable to ask any residential neighborhood to accommodate this influx of traffic for any reason. As a longtime Westside resident (40-plus years). I have witnessed the steady decline of the area The Westside does not need additional traffic to fuel its decline. A clinic serving thousands of people would be counterproductive to Westside redevelopment lf the clinic must be in Costa Mesa, find a location removed from a residential neighborhood. It is not burdensome to require people to put forth an effort to use public transporta· tion or to walk to get what they need or want. A -You have a powerful hand and excellent support for partner's suit. First, rule out any sort of forcing heart raise with only three-card sup- port, even with such excellent help as you can produce. Next, don't even think about jump shifting with such a weak spade suit. For the moment. just bid one spade and see what reac- tion that gets from partner.
