Lolita Harper Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -City Council tnembers on Monday will consider launching environmen- tal studies for a department store slated to re- place a vintage bowling alley, vacant ice skat- lng rink and empty movie theater at the Mesa Verde Shopplng Center on Harbor Boulevard. Renovation plans for the southern half of the Mesa Verde Shopping Center, where the lively Kona Lanes and the empty Ice Olalet and Ed- wards movie theater sit, call for all three build- ings to be replaced by a Kohl's retail store. Kohl's representatives have submitted an ap- plication for a 95,000-square-foot store on the Segerstrom-owned property. according to a staff report. The square footage is up from pre- vious applications that called for an 88,000- square-foot store. To bring Kohl's to Costa Mesa. a series of studies must be conducted to evaluate how the development will affect traffic, air quality, noise and neighbors. City staffers are recom- mending the council members approve a $59,000 contract to LSA Associates to fund the study. For 2 ~ days I sang. prayed, : took notes, laughed, cried and took : more notes at an event designed to motivate • us to develop leadership qualities In whatever : roles God has callCMI us to fulfill. : It was my first experience with video • broadcasting, and though originally skeptical, I now believe in the potential of positive technology to connect people across many miles. There were satellite locations across • ~CINDY TRANE CHRISTESON the country and some in Canada with estimates of27,000 people participating in the same event. The combination of great technology, graphics, music and speakers was so well done that I frequently felt I was actually in Olinois at the host church, Willow Creek. instead of the satellite location I attended at Mariners Cllurch in Irvine. What I found far more impressive were the m essages from people with well-known names, as well as those I'd never heard of before. One idea was repeated in dilferent forms and from different faces. More than ever before, our world needs men and women to live lives of integrity at home and in their worlcplace. Our world needs leaders who can be trusted. Some of the leadersrup qualities we were challenged to develop were honesty, humllity end accountability. Other characteristics were the ability to get along with and serve others, to be aware of our strengths and weaknesses, to operate from a spiritual and moral base, end to be willing to be team players and team builders. These traits weren't simply stated as great nouns and adjectives to add to our physical resumes, but as qualities to strive to bring to reality in our lives. The speakers shared failures and successes with surprising frankness. They also explained how God used those times to brlng different results. Most of them also touched on the incredible power of forgiveness. I walked outside during a break and passed people ta!Jcing on cellular phones, probably checking in at work or at home. One man seated on a concrete wall looked down, but I heard him say, ·rm at a conference. and I couldn't let any more time go by without calling and asking for your forgiveness." He continued talking in a hushed voice. It was obviously a private moment, and I went over to a table to pray for the young man and whoever was on the other end of the line. I looked back once and saw him nod his head and smile. I thanked God for the miracle tha t seemed to be ta.king place. I also started a list of people I need to ask forgiveness of, as well as to forgive. Will it be hard? Probably. Will it hurt my pride? Probably. When I've asked for forgiveness and been granted it, it is beautifully freeing. When others have asked for my forgiveness, it is also beautifully freeing. These times have led to deeper relationships. The world needs people who possess leadersrup qualities, including the ability to forgive and to be forgiven. God loves to forgive and he loves forgivers. Should we, could we, follow h1s lead? And you can quote me on that. • CINDY TRANE CHRISTESON is a Newport Beach reaident who speaks frequently to parenting groups. I believe the health and well-being of children ls pan.mount to a healthy cemmunity. The Newport-Mesa Unified School District embraces that belief as well, and Understands that in order to be ready to learn in school and gl"Qw, children need to have access to high-qualJty care. But ~t care is not available for alJ children on the Westside of Costa Mesa. .CHOC and the school di.strict would like to fill a community void, which is documented with data from the 2000 U.S. census. 2002 Orange County Health Needs Assessment, California Department of Health Services and UCLA Center for Health Policy Reeeareh. A CHOC clinic would help C.OSta Mesa children who are dearly in need and make it far easier for parents who find It dlfticult to seek care for thelr kids beCause of financial or transpOrtadon barriers. ThJs Is not an abstract. hypothetical argument. I know this to be true from years of providing care to children in other CHOC clinics. I have had the privilege to work with many wondetful parents who simply want the best for their children, and have nowhere else to turn. These are proud, hard-working adults who, like alJ of us, would do anything for their children. Most of them walk their children to our clinics in Santa Ana and Orange; by and ~ they live REBUTTAL right in the neighborhoods where our clink:s are located. The demotP'8Phics in our Southern California cominunidee have changed. And whether we are willing to. acknowledge Lt or not, the fact~ These Is tremendous need for children's health can in Costa Mesa. I encourage an residents to open their minds and closely evaluate the positive Impact that CliOC has made in other rommunities where we have provided pediattic preventive and primary care. And in the process. I hope you will also open your hearts to what matters most: the health of children. • GEETA GROVER is a pediatrician practicing general and behavioral pediatrics et Children's Hospital of Orange Countv. Slow growth doesn't work for Greenlight I. too, take exception to the 'Characterization of the Green.light movement as "slow growth." Measure S (the Greenligbt Initiative) forces a citywide vote 'C¥l projects that substantially exceed the parameters of the ~plan (From the Newsroom. "Sony, but the edjectives stay. .. Aug. 5 by Tuny Dodero). Dodero says .. exceeds certain thresholds within the city's general plan." This is mislead.in& as no vote is required on projecta conforming to the general plm The Oty Council has repeatedly~ projects •lbstantialy llrpr and with greeta impact than allowed . by the general plan. So the people passed an initiative to take back rontrol of projects exceeding general plan limits. He ackrl<7tYledges that ~ city coundls had failed to keep deY5>pment "in c:beclc." and then Went on to use a dless analogy to say that not many DXMS are available when you're in dleli I donl think the seoeraI plan keeps deYelopment in chedc; it's there to regulate and rontrol it for the benefit of the citizeos, just the same u the laws "'81"8ti~ other fonm d oonduct. ad1 as ddving. UQ oompare this to a hypothetical situation: The speed limit on Bal>oa Boulevard is 35 mph. but if a motomt feels ft'a important enough. he can apply to the Oty Council. and maybe they will grant him a special permit to allow him to drive 00 mph on that road, and the other citi7.ens must like It or lump it If the citi7.ens who oppose this practice were to pass an initiative requiring a vote of the people to ratify such special permits, would you call them "slow-drive" proponents? So Green.light might slow down growth. but the only kind of growth being slowed down is the kind simiJar to the special permit legalized 5Pf""ding in the hypodiedca1 aituation aboYe. I hope Hanna Hill returns to Orange County to witness the flights from the El Toro international airport because it just might be the best planned airport in the world DONALDNYRE Newport Beach Fish, not Newport's fishermen, need saving The Aug. 1 story regarding the local championing of the dory fishermen is troubling to me ("Newport Beach comes to dory's defense~). NaturalJy, no one wants to see hard-working people put out of work, but it happens all of the time as times change. If California's rock fish CRYSTAL LAOOERDAlE I DAILY PLOT Frank Leal and his family prepare the catch for the early morning-Customers of the Dorymen's Fish Market. The Leal Fish Co. has been in business at the market for nearly 30 years. populations are in serious enough decline to warrant such extreme measures (and they undeniably are), then so be it. Every locale has some good reason to resist the ban on catching these species.of fish. However, none of them is as pressing as the very existence of the fish in question. Fishermen deny their greedy takes and any decline In fish numbers, just as loggers defend their tragic clear-cuts and swear that there are more trees than ever. All the tired old arguments are bankrupt. Jn the case of deep-water Ashes, one cannot possibly know what is n etted or hooked until it is visible, by which time it is too late. As it is, it is probably 100 late to save a couple of the most depleted species. As a taxpayer and citizen and a respecter of fellow-voyacert on Earth, I demand that the rock fish be given a good. loug breather from my fellow citizens who see them u nothing but cash or •sport.• By the way. unless your article was in reference to a particular dory, It should have read "comes to dorrles' defense." WAUAC£ WOOO Costa Mesa 17th Street could use some cleaning up As I have raced in and out or stores on 17th Street. I have wondered who oversees the condition of the sidewalb and parking lot? It seems to get a little worse each year. I have wondered about some of the people who weren't racing. just sitting or standing, looking each shopper up and down sometimes asking for money. One just figures loitering is acceptable in this area. I have observed restaurant-type trash being kicked out of the car door into the parking lot. During one of these observations, I wished I would have had a camera to catch the action O didn't) and get the car license. Where would I have taken it? Does anybody care? One wonders if the dirty sidewalks and dirty parking lot might attract people who would pull a woman out of her car, as they did on Aug. 4 in this parking lot c·costa Mesa police arrest 3 carjacking suspects," Aug. 6), throw her to the ground (better than being kidnapped) and steal her car1 I wonder, I wonder. can't help it if I wonder. They don't know her parents, have no connection to her family and don't even live in the same city as the Costa Mesa 4-year-old. But they care about her. With the kindness of Getting into the groove sttangers, Gaddy Wampuss will headline a rock 'n' roll fashion show benefit concert Friday at the Hald Rocle caf6 at Fashion Island to help Leilani's family with her medical expenses. Newport Beach's Redline 5 and Oevls will also perform at the show, which will feature fashions from Cliromestar worn by professionals from Chase Models. Leilani suffered serious chest When Newport-Mesa feels like dancing, there are plenty of places where you can shake a tail feather or two Youn1Chan1 Daily Pilot W hether you're looking to dance among sweaty people who don't care about how loud the music is because the last thing they want to do is talk, or sway just the slightest bit in a mellow lounge where people prefer to sip drinks and watch, Newport-Mesa offers plenty of opportunities to groove. Other times, you can just listen for the loud music and know there is dancing to be had. PHOTOS BY DON LEACH I DAILY PILOT Glassblower Kent Kahlen creates a vase from molten glass in his studio. His work will show at Laguna's Festival of Arts show. The Tilci Bar in Costa Mesa is an obvious place for dance. Regulars call it the rare electronic-music spot in Orange County. It's dark, loud and dizzying with jumping lights. Patrons come to dance to the house music of popular DJs and other musical acts. There's drinking and the occasional shouting above the din, but the most prominent activity is dancing. Margaritaville in Newport Beach offers an equally upbeat time, but to a different tune. Between the margarita-drinldng and Mexican-food eating, patrons get up and dance between tables, as well as on the dance floor. Musical acts perform seven nights a week. And then there are the places like Carmelo's Ristorante in Newport Beach. A fairly upscale Italian restaurant with a huge bar, lounge area, dining area, patio and, of course, dance floor, patrons there groove to different rhythms according to the mood being promoted that nigbL On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays, Latin $3.lsa performer Ivan Marcello performs. Sunday is tango night, and Thursday and Friday evening stages are saved for the world music/Latin jazz/reggae ofTino Macchia and bis band. Patrons can be generalized to be in their nUd-20s through nUd-30s. ·we have a little solid crowd that just comes to bear these groups," said Brad Eggebraaten, bookkeeper at Carmelo's. Until then, be wa8 a . self-proclaimed "typical young.9ter" who started and quJt jobs in a pattern that showed he was still looking for his place in the world. Today bis studio contains two such fiery holes -the glory hole and the furnace -puntis (rods used to transfer melted glass), blowpipes, pipe-warmers and other chunky tools. It's bot in there. Sort of scary too, as the presence of things that can bum you is plenty. But for the 36-year·old Kah.ten. who barely flinches atsmall bums from ash falling on his skin, a glowing rod with a bulb of tluorescent orange glass at Its tip might as well be a baton meant to twirl. WATER FITNESS PHOTOS BY DON LEACH I DAJl..Y P1LOT YMCA Water Fitness class members including Sandy Anderson, red hat, and Sandy Tupman, second from left, do muscle strengthening exercises to combat injtJries and arthritis. Anderson said she could hardly walk to the mailbox before discovering the class. Now she can move and walk freely. A world of water wonder In addition to swimming, more and more people are enjoying the several benefits of various water exercises here in Newport Beach. Bryce Alderton Daily Pilot · NEWPOR't BEACH -Ever heard of water walk- ing, deep water running and wall exercises? These are just a few of the various exercises of why people in Newport-Mesa and around the na- tion a.re quickly flocking to pools to move their legs, anns, torsos and whatever other body parts they want to work out as part of "water exercise." Water exercise began about 25 years ago as a way for accident victims to recover from their inju- ries and an exercise routine for people with arthri· tis, according to Sally JCuledge, an active adult co- ordinator at the (.entral Orange Coast YMCA in Newport Beach, who has taught wate.r exercise courses for seven years. But now, more and more people from 19· and 20-year-olds to those in their 80s are putting on swim trunks and jumping in pools to reap the ben- efits of the water workouts. Whether it be "water walking" that involves moving forward, backward and sideways using short, quick or long steps in waist-deep to chest- deep water, or performing "deep water exercises" that involve slow, medium or fast-paced exercises without the feet touching the bottom of the pool, there's plenty of exercises to go around. "The buoyancy allows people to exercise in wa- ter since 90CJli of the body is buoyant," JCuledge said. "There is no pounding or jarring so It's easy on the joints." Benefits touch the physical social and psycho- logical spectrums and include building up endur· ance, muacular balance, stress relief, strengthening the heart, increasing drculatioo, renewing enei:gy, feDowship with other people and improving phy- sique. tculedge teaches one aerobics class and three water exerdle classes each day at the YMCA and Mid many orthopedists refer clients to the cl.aMes to help them rehabilitate their muscles. Water exercise goes a step beyond swimming, according to IWledg'e. who said the draw of the . .,structor Saly K~e goes through the routile as she runs students through YtlCA water fitness class. classes she teaches has as much to do with the en- vironment as the exercises themselves. "We have physical therapists using our facility and there's a pool of options to choose from.~ Ku- ledge said. •lt's just come into focus that younger people have realized the benefit you get from (wa- ter exercise). People have always been swimming but water fitness predominantly focuses on thera- peutic uses in a comfortable atmosphere that's a stress relief. You enjoy yourself so you can't be too strict in the water." Water provides 12 times more resistance that land, according to Sally Stanton, owner of Sally Stanton Total Fitness/Water Warm-Ups. who has taught water fitness, or as she terms it, water aero· bics, for five years at places such as the Newport Dunes Resort and the Newport Beach Tennis Oub. "You bum 400-500 calories an hour based on a IS<>·poWld person." Stanton said. Stanton has 24 years experience in both New- port Beam and Irvine's PIUb and Recreation De· partments teaching everything from ballroom dancing and jazzercise to her new Power Water Workout Stanton will teach the United States Water Pit- ness Association certification class Sept 8 at the Central Orange Coast YMCA. "(Water aerobics) is much kinder to your body," Stanton said "The buoyancy the water provides makes it a perfect place for those with hip, knee or back injuries and you won't overheat because you have a cooling mechanism in the water. The buoy- ancy of the water allows for the cushioning of the joints so you minimize the impact to your joints or have no impact if you're doing a deep conditioning class. .. Younger crowds have got their heads wet as well in Stanton's classes. "In our clientele we have people in their early 20s, two people who are 19, men a.re getting more involved and the-baby-boomer generation is catching on big time," Stanton said. One of the draws to water aerobics according to Stanton ls that people can do the same eJterdse at their own levels and still reap the benefits. "You can be a very well-conditioned athlete standing or ftoadng next to a beginner and both swimmers achieve the same goal by the end of the class," Stanton said. "lt makes working out fun and tones every part of your body." SWIMMING SaVday, qust 17, 2002 11 BASEBALL Green . takes Eagles' post After one year as an assistant at Newport Harbor and two at Laguna Hills, he says he's ready for position at Estancia. Steve Vlr1en Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -Jon Green, who helped lead the Laguna Hills High base- ball team to back-to-back Sea View League titles as an assistant coach the past two years, is the new head coach of the Estancia baseball program. Green also spent one year at Newport Harbor with Jim Kiefer, before moving on to Laguna H.iDs to coach with Jeffc.e- cil. "I felt I was ready to take the next level," Green said of his interest in the Estancia job. "This is something I've been looking for. My plan is to tum Es- tancia baseball in to a well-respected program in.Orange County. I want to be a teacher first of all, through teaching I'll be lucky enough to coach." Green, 24, also plans to maintain what be calls, "a positive atmosphere for baseball," at Estancia. "There is a good solid base, with the boosters and the administration," Green said. Green, who played as a shortstop at Dana Hills High, will~ walk-on coach at F.standa. and will alsO be a substitute teacher. He plans to eam a degree in political science and wort for a teaching credential throughout the school year at Cal State Fullerton. Green said he was in charge of first· base coaching, hitting and outfielders while at Laguna Hills, which reached the CIF Division I semifinals in 2001. He detailed the type of players he's looking for in the Eagles' program "Overall commJtment to baseball. and a love for the game," Green said of the players' criteria. "They should have a desire and a passion to succeed, and to get better not only as a baseball player but as a person. "What I learned at Laguna Hills," he continued. "You have to take the good with the bad. Building a program. it's a day-to-day process. Laguna Hills taught me that success comes from the whole team concept If we all have the com- mon goal, we11 reach that goal." Green takes over a program that car- ded just 19 players last season. The P.s- tancia varsity team has not made the playoffs the past eight years. Last sea- son. Doug Deats resigned early in the campaign, citing personal reasons for his decision. C.K. Green, no relation to Jon Green, took over as the coach. The Eagles finished 6-18, 3-12 in the Pacific Coast League. Deats' shocking resignation marted the second time in five years the F.agles lost their coach early in the season. One game into the 1998 season. Joe McKlt· trick resigned, and was replaced by Tun Green. C.JC:s father. nm Green returned as coach in 1999, and resigned after the season. Deats rep.laced him. The Eagles went 9· 14, 2-10 in the PCL in Deab' Ont year and be wu named Newport-Metia District Coadl of the Veer. In 2001, Deats repeated that honor when the F.agles went 6-18, 3·12 in te.glle and won the perpetual Paul 'D'oxel Dopby after winning two of three pines against aosstown rival c.o.ta Mela. fYounger Peirsol takes second in 800 free 'Nicole Mackey and Aaron the PhlDips es National Swimming yow,,er *er.
