PANEL APPOINTMENTS The City C.Ouncil will hold off on any formal appointments to the Human Relations C.Oromit- tee because the general appoint- ment time for new members ar- rives in October. The council con- sidered the appli- cations of alternate members Russ Ramirez and Judy Stone to fill seats vacated by regular mem- bers Cindy Brenneman and Karen Sager, but said it was too close to October to make penna- nent appointments. Both Ramirez and Stone were at recent committee meetings that included emotional, turbu- lent and heartfelt discussions about three members accused of intolerance on a local Web site. Alt.hough both were alternate members, they were invited to join in the discussion and of- fered opinions about the alleg- edly racist and homophobic postings. READERS RESPOND Clinic doesn't belong on Wes~side AT ISSUE: Three Westside residents would prefer the . center proposed for Rea Elementary School look elsewhere for a home. . I feel that the children need the medical care that tbe OfOC clinic · would provide, but I guess I am a NIMBY (not in my baclcyard). I do not want a free clinlc in my backyard for many reasons. Some of the main reasons are that this would cause a lot of foot and automobile trafBc in a residendal neighborhood. and would attract many children from other cities to come to Costa Mesa. at Rea FJementary School And we are told we need to "embrace the dlanglng <lernopapbics reganDees of legality'" ( this straJght from a sitting council member) • ImpHed is that the Third Worlding of the Westside needs to become an accepted fact of life. P.Dougb Is enough. Would It be too mean-spirited to suggest that the freebies being handed out on the~ are one cause of the large number of children in Med congregating there? Companble to how feeding plgieom causes an NC8lating demand for food from more and more pigeons. f' MAILBAG We already have many here who . cannot afford to live in Costa Mesa. but they come here and live here, with many families in one small apartment or house in order to be able to afford the rent The main reasons they come to Costa Mesa ls the free food, clothing and health care they receive here. As you well know, almost all of the charities are on the Westside of the city and we do not need or want any more. Perhaps a counseling center that teaches that having dilldren you cannot afford to care for (which Is in itae.lf a auel act against cb.ildreo) is a better plan for the area. This message is definitely not getting out. Observe the pedestrian base on the Westside for proof. 1Wo yo~ in tow, one oo the way and one in a stroller seems to be the norm. I know no one is supposed to mention this, that lt b somehow taboo to notice this. I believe the financial and transportation barriers to health care and meals for seniors should ~~riodty. If I did not live on the Wesbide, then maybe I too would support iL It is time for the Westside to be redeveloped and brought up to the standard that it deserves. The Westside has the potential to be the best pert of the dty. So, I would suggest that if you truly want to build the CHOC clinic. you select a site other than a resldendal neighborhood and also not on the Westside of the city. Saturday): How much does Dr. Geeta Grover make a year? Where does she live? Will she wodc for free at the proposed OfOC clinic in Costa Mesa? Will she move next door to the clinic? Residents of Costa Mesai and especially of the Westside, are getting fed up with holier-than-thou types telling the Westside that this or that charity is for the children. If GroYer wants to be a missionary, jwnp on a p&ane and travel to the Third Wodd. COMMUNITY COLLEGE WOMEN'S WATER POLO PREVIEW SEAN HUER I DAl..Y Pl.OT OCC's Heather Deyden blocks a shot in a match from last season. An AIAmerican goalie with 179 saves as a freshman. she's the heart of the defense. Target's bull's-eye Pirates are a marked team after last year's state championship run despite many new faces. Steve Vlr1en Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -The Orange Coast CoUege women's water polo team will be sure to face several ch.allenges this season. The biggest challenge for OCC will be to repeat last year's amazing feats. The Pirates won the school's first women's water polo state championship and finished 35-0 again.st community college teams last year. The season will be even more chal- lenging because the Pirates, the de- fending Orange Empire Conference champions, return just four players from last season. The four, who will be starters. are Heather Deyden, Shari Meyer. Erica Nicholson and Ni- chole Sonnenfeld. Deyden, a product of Newport Harbor tngh. earned AD-Orange Em- pire Conference and AD-American laurels as the goalie and defensive leader of the Pirates. Deyden re- corded 179 saves. Nicholson and Sonnenfeld also provided key contributions to the Pi- rates' championship run. Each scored 58 goals. while Nicholson amassed 60 steals and Sonnenfeld finished with 37 steals. Meyer. a left-hander, scored 18 goals and had I 0 steals. Four players who contributed greatly last year have moved on. Devon Wright and Nei.sba Hoagland will play for Loyola Marymount, while Ouisdne McDonaJd and na Montalvo will be at UC Irvine. In addition, the Pirates will be without longtime coach Don Watson. who will be on sabbatical Former as- sistant coach Mike Giles, who has al- ways taken care of the recruiting of OCC players, will be the head coach for the Pirates. .. I'm confident we can make it to (the state tournament)," Giles said. .. If we play well like the way we can. we can make the final four. We are a freshnwl-loaded team. We do have those key sophomores." Among the freshman expected to make an Immediate impact are Am- ber Braly, from Newport Harbor High, and Sara Nat.aliw, from Irvine. Both should bring speed to OCCs attack. and have the versatility to play In various positions. Nat.aliw, a fa.st swimmer, will mostly play at two me- ters. Freshmen Courtney Robertson. Sah&h Mitchell, Shannon Kline. Alison Kane and Everyn DeTomaso will also provide stability for the defending state champions. Freshman Alexa Miller, who helped lead Corona del Mar tligb to its first CJF Southern Section Division IV champion.ship, along with Mitcbell, who bas speed to be the Pirates' sprinter. plan to con- tribute for the Pirates. USTA pro circuit stop schedUled for Sept. 16 UCI Continued from N3 ahead and the Anteaters have been on this road before. The UO men's team, on the other hand, will need more di- rection this season and some pa- tience, as it might take some time to grow. Runners from both teams are getting to blow each other in Mammoth. where the Anteaters lake their annual one-week pre- season trip. They left today for the trip. ·1 like for us 10 go and get away from everything.· said O'Boyle, who is in his 21st sea- son with the Anteaters. O'Boyle has been named Big West C.On- ference Coach of the Year 18 times in men's and women''> cross counay and once in women's back and field. O'Boyle's women's teams at UCI have finished in the conference's top two spots 18 of his 20 sea- sons. while the men's program has accomplished the same feat 11 times during his tenure. ·vou get lo know them during the six hours on the ride up." The Anteaters return 16 runners this season, and will feature 6ve sen- iors, including T~ Cendejas. who finished eighth in the Big West Olampionships last year. Irvine finished second in the conference meet, as host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo won the Li- tle. The runner-up finish has been the Anteaters' motivation throughout the off-season, O'Boyle said. The results have provided Irvine with a great amount of depth and high ex- pectations. ·rm not putting a lot of pres- sure on them,• O'Boyle said of his women's team. ·niey lcnow what they have to do. They've been together for a long time now. They have developed over a period of time. It's hard tcr loolc at the roster and see that there are seniors. They have a shot at the NCAA championship. if every- thing falls into place for them. You need a little luck, too, for that to happen.· During the early part of the upcoming season, the Anteaters will rely on their strong core of returners. Junior Julie Manson, who had the highest finish for Ir· vine in the Blg West Ownpion- ships {seventh), won the 10,000- meters di.le in the Big West dur- ing the back and field Sea.son in the spring.
