the mold, according to the docu-
ments.

Property Manager Eric Nelson
said he knew nothing about the
lawsuit and declined to com-
ment further before speaking
with the property owners.
"I'm just a pawn in the big pie-
ture, so J can't say anything right
no.v," Nelson said.
Segerstrom officials were un·
available for comment by press
time.
Mesa Verde Villa Apartments is
a 180-unit complex, with rents
starting at about $1,300 for a
one-bedroom plan.
But residents say the pricey
rents did not ensure quality and
claim that carpets, floorboards
and walls were blanketed with
colonies of toxic mold. Attorney
Richard Quintilone, who re-
presents the 27 tenants, said that
when management was. asked t<>
make repairs' it simply ignored
complaints or said it would cost
too much to fix.
Quintilone said many of the
tenants began complaining as
early as 1999. By late 2001, many
had already develoj>ed illnesses,
which they claim to be a result of
the haz.ardous bacteria. Some of
the symptoms include respira-
tory illness, rashes. headaches,
seizures and a terminated preg-
nancy, the lawsuit alleges.

ognized the effects of p<)S'Sibly
harmful bacteria in the state's
Toxic Mold Protection Act of
2001, which requires the c:allfor-
nia Department of Health Serv-
ices to assess the bealth threat
caused by indoor mold, offidals
said.

Mesa North home simply gjves Greta Anderson-
Davis more room to love, the mother of 10 ar-
gued in her application to add a second story to
her home.
The Planning Commission will consider her
request Monday evening and review the plans to
create an eight-bedroom borne for the large
family. which consists mainly of adopted chil-
dren who have developmental disabilities.

of life on the Orange Coast, thanks to a local
host, after surviving the ravages of a civil war.

The Sudanese civil war started in
l 983, when one of the teens. John
Kuol, was born. At the age of 5,
Kuol got separated from his family
and joined a march to Ethiopia -
1,000 miles under the scon:bing
sun. Uons would attack the
wallcers, canying away the
straggleTS. They had to swim ~
crocodile-infested riveIS to reach
their destination.

arrived So they headed south to
Kenya. which meant another three
grueling months of food
deprivation and sweltering beat
Plans for the home in the 3000 block of Madi-
son Avenue can for the addition of a 950-squa,re.
foot second story that would include a master
bedroom suite and a bonus room. Anderson·
Davis is also asking to lengthen the existing ga-
rage. The total proposed square footage for the
home is 3,982.

tially approved the proposed second-story, say-
ing it ~would be substantially compatible and
harmonious with the neighborhood, since many
other properties contain two-story houses. and
the scale and massing of the proposed construe·
lion would not be obtrusive from the street"

T hey are known as the "lost
boys."
They are teenagers from
Sudan forced to leave their
country because of a brutal civil
war.
The Cwtys have been ferrying
the teenagers around Southern
California, taking them to famous
locales like Hollywood, Staples
Center and UCIA, and simply
showing them the California way
of life 1 one dramatically different
from their own beginnings.
While they weren't subjected to
the brutality of war in Kenya. they
did have to contend with roving
bandits raiding their campground,
stealing their food and randomty
shooting people, Kuol said. Their
sustenance consisted of a bowl of Neighbor Stan Brown disagreed and appealed
Valantine's approval. Brown is backed by 6ve
other neighbors who sent letters to the city to
oppose the construction. In the past few years, many of
them have resettled in the United
States so they can live in a safer
environment than their homeland
and get an education.
"Meeting them. you can't help
but love them," Curry said.

courageous. They take nothing for
granted.."

Kuol survived on grass and benies.
He became so sick be had to stay
in a hospital for about a year, Curry
said.

eligible to come to the United

hardship, many had to wait
interminably to find out if they
would be accepted here. Kuol
finally arrived in December.
In a letter to the city. Brown wrote that the
neighbors want to prevent another monstrosity,
such as the contentious and costly three-story
Samoa House -a battle still being fought in
court. For the past week and a half.

L ife often surprises me. We all have
stories of surprises, some are pleasant,
others unusual and there are
Wlfortunate ones as well Recently some
friends and I shared a bizarre event I doubt
we'd have believed if we hadn't experienced it
together.
Severcil of us rode bikes on a gray morning.
We exercised our mouths and our legs while
pedaling through Newport Beach and Irvine.
Then we stopped for
.---------. coffee, muffins and
talked about what God
had taught us lately.
Preparation for
Jewish High Holy
Days are already
underway in
Newport-Mesa.

the start of Rosh Hasbanah.
the Jewish new year, and
signal the beginning of the
High Holy Days. a 10-day period of
reflection and renewal that
concludes with Yom IGppur. the Day
of Atonement. .
·The High Holy Days are about
coming to the synagogue to find
improvement for our lives, but this
year is a little different," said Rabbi
Marc Steven Rubenstein of'TI!mple
Isaiah in Newport Beach. "This year,
there is a lot of anger toward God.
and rabbis feel like they have to give
answers to what is going on."
But. Rubenstein said, the
tragedies of Sept. 11 and the ongoing
tragedies in lsratl are not God's
fault.
A friend named Anne
joined us. She was home
from vacation and
walked over with Maggie,
her golden retriever. She
tied Maggie nearby, and
then sat with us. Maggie
was clearly so happy to
have her master back
home that she kept
wiggling and "talking" to
Anne, until one friend
"Instead of coming Lo God and
saying. 'Look. we need to improve
ourselves,' we blame God for man's
actions. That's not the way it should
be," he said.

decided Maggie wouJd be happier, and
qujeter, if she was tied to Anne's chair. Maggie
much preferred being next to her ml'ster.
We enjoyed our visit until we realized how
lace it was. We jumped up, and something
startled Maggie, maybe our sudden moves or
the noise of many metal chairs. She took off
running with a heavy chair in tow. Anne
instantly yelled, "Maggie, Stop!" and under
normal conditions, Maggie obeys her master's
voice. It seemed funny momentarily. until we
realized Maggie hadn't heard Anne and was
running toward people, and out to a crowded
parking lot.
The banging and clanging of metal on the
pavement, as well as bouncing off cars,
intensified the faster Maggie ran. We took off
in different directions, trying to intercept a
frightened dog running out of control. We all
prayed that the fleeing dog and nying chair
wouJdn't hit or be hit by anybody.
Fonunately, most cars stopped as soon as
they saw or heard the commotion, and many
tried to help. One brave woman caught poor
scared Maggie after the chair became wedged
under a car's bumper. She sacrificed her time,
her shoes, and some scratches on her car to
help.
We tried to calm Maggie and help Anne deal
with insurance, confused car owners and
surprised pedestrians. We think the chair
weighed at least 15 pounds, and the one that
had been part of Maggie's escapade was so
damaged, it had to be destroyed. It took
awhile to catch our breath and thoughts, and
for Maggie to caJm down, but then we talked
about lessons to learn from the surreal
situation.
For one thing. when we run from the voice
of reason, we may unknowingly start a
self-perpetuating problem that ends in some
sort of a train wreck. We also need positive
friends who keep us from heading in the wrong
direction, or help untangle us when we do.
We also agreed that we are safest in life
when we stay close, call on and listen to God.
He is the master of love and life, and he is
always worth listening to.

symbolize hope for a sweet new
year. A blessing Is said: "Blessed are
you, God. ruJer of lhe universe.
creator of the fruit of the tree." The
blessing is followed by this prayer:
"May it be your will, our God and
God of our ancestors, that the new
year be good and sweet for us."
If this new year Is sweet, it is
bittersweet.

ongoing tragedies in Israel.
Historically, she said, there have
been many times when Jews have
had to usher in a new year after an
old year when bad thin~ have
happened.

The Orange County Israel
Solidarity Task Force and the Jewish
Community Relations Council have
worked to create a tangible bond
with Jews In Israel during the
holidays this year. With a project
called UHoney for the HoUdays."
they hope to send this message: We
are with you in sweetness and
sorrow.

until Sept 10. Honey for families in
Israel may be ordered by majJ or
telephone through the J~
Federation of Orange County. It may
be purchased in person at the
federation and seven other locations
in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa.
Supporters who make a donation
in person can keep a jar of the
honey for their own holiday table.
The senior center in ICiryat Malachi
will distribute the honey purchased
for families in Israel.
"I'd like to bring peace there, but I
can't d o it," said Beverly Jacobs,
chairwoman of the Jewish
Community Relations Council. "This
project ties Jews here in Orange
County with people in Israel on a
reaJ human leveJ, and the response
has been heartening. Many
synagogues and organizations are
promoting the project."

That's no way lo rush off a kid
to school, but J suppose it beats
having to walk 10 miles in the
snow uphill both ways.

presentations are ill-prepared, garbled
and difficult to follow. This even
includes those times when bis own
actions -an appeal. for example -
bas precipitated the council review.
I've watched as, perhaps distracted
by his pending legal difficulties. his
attention wandered and he appeared to
be out of touch with the proceedings.
I've been chagrined those many times
when he cast bis vote on an Issue
before the question had even been
called and, at other times, when the
cleric had to remind him to vOte. or
issues but rather activities like sailing.

single street in Newport Beach. A few
yean ago, he emherbd on a goal of
walking every single street in Che city;
that's why they can him "WaDdng Don."
If we abeady had a fair-minded and
environmentally sensitive candidate, why
did Greeolight feel it necessary to include
their own candidate on their slate?
I can only think of one reason; they
don't want someone who ls fair-minded
and wW look at all sides of an issue. They
must prefer aomeone who wW only look
at one side of an ialRJe and always vote in
a predktable manner. I don't think that is

Company's production of "The
Wu:a.rd of Oz." running through Sept
8 at Lincoln School, Ryan McKenian
has brought in a ramp that snakes
from the stage to the area where the
audience sits.
It was recently painted yellow to
look more like the yellow brick road.
To simulate falling snow, he's using
a bubble machine and substituting
bubbles for snow.
He's adopted a track-on-ceiling
system that allows stage crew

making leaps.
ln July, Newport Harbor
foocball players on all levels
took tests on computers that
assessed their memory slciUs.
Douglas Harrington, a
Newport Beach neuropsy-
chologist specializing in inju-
ries to the brain, adminis-
tered the tests over two days
in late July as players wrapped
up summer conditioning.
HaningtOn approached
Newport Harbor Athletic Di-
rector Eric 1Weit, who then
referred HarringtOn to Brin-
kley last spring.
"He explained the program
and it seems like a real ben-
eficial program to me," Brin-
kley said. .
Harrington uses lmPact 2.0,
a Microsoft Wmdows-based
program that can be adminis-
tered by an athletic trainer,
coach or physician, that mea-
sures cognitive activity such
as word discrimination, de-
sign memory and visual at-
tention span among other
brain functions.
Each player received a
baseline score specific to
them when they toolc the test
in July. If they suffer a concus-
sion in a game or practice,
they would retalce the same
tests to determine if they re-
turned to their baseline level.

the movement for the Orange
Coast College men's water polo
team, as the Pirates prepare for
their upcomJng season.
The Pi.rates return just three
players and the rest or the team
is made up of 14 freshmen, who
are not the only new additions to
OCC men's water polo.
Mike Stachowski, who was
planning to be an assi5tant
coach for the Pirates' men's and
women's water polo teams, will
be the new coach or the Coast
men's squad.
Greg Boyer. among the best
water polo ollidals in the nation,
was slated to take over for former
OCC Coach Jason Gall, who now
coaches both water polo pro-
grams at Pomona College. Boyer
decide to focus more on his ca-
reer as an officlaJ and Stachowski
came to the forefront.
StachowsJci, who coached at
Santa Margarita High four years
ago and at Dana Hills in 1986, is
one of the lead coaches for the
TRAP Water Polo Academy. He
began work as the OCC men's
water polo team coach in May.
He has assembled a team that is
destined to be better than last
year's squad, which finished fifth
in the Orange Empire Confer-

the compass to stay on track.

Unsuspecting winds and
strong currents can make this an
unpredictable race, according to
f'Ollmer.
"The main thing is staying on
trad:: and getting a good rhythm
going and knowing what you're
doing when the weather swells
up because these currents can
really make the (watercraft) tum
around.• Follmer said.
In last year's race Follmer saJd
the ESPN helicopter new over-
head for two miles so he saJd he
knew then that be was on the
dghr path, but he takes nothing
for granted.
When Follmer made the tum
at Catalina last year, he said he
saw none of the other racers on
the water, which isn't unusual.
"You think you're lost but you
might see a jet ski off in the dis-
tance and ask yourselt ··Should r follow him1"' Follmer saJd.
Last year Follmer earned· five
titles within the 13-race BP Mo·
tonports Offshore Endurance
Serles.
He races in three series. Gran·
Pm, LongCourse and Team En-

Course races are 90 minutes with
a three-and-a-half mile layout
wfth a solo rider and one fuel
stop held on Jakes and reservoirs.
There are three Team Endur-
ance competitions or the 13-
yearly races. One race is three
hows which Follmer's team of
four won earlier this year at Lake
Penis. Another race Is four hours
that Follmer and crew competed
in a month ago. They led at one
point but their watercraft suf-
fered a crad:: in the hull and had
to retire. The final Team Endur-
ance race is the six-hour, eight-
mile Team Endurance 300 com-
ing up in October off of Long
Beach.
In 200 l Follmer won five
championship ddes and earned
the No. 2 position in the overall
race standings. Follmer gets to
carry the No. 2 plate during the
2002 season.

two-day Ventura CoUege Tourna-
ment, where the Pirates will take
on Citrus CoUege, Sept. 6. The
next day, OCC faces Los Angeles
