It was during the Depression, when cities were going belly up almost as often as today's corporations. Newport Beach kept afloat in large part because of income from the Police Department and city court. Balboa could be guaranteed to furnish SO to .------, 75 drunks to the city jail on a busy Saturday night At$20 a drunk. that was big money for those days. As city ROBERT judge, my job was to pick GARDNER up the money from the Police Department every morning and carry it to the courtroom in the old City Hall. This being the Depression, there were nickels, dimes and pennies, as well as folding money. I diligently counted the money, entered the total into the ledger. then carried the money across the hall to Jim Gant, our city treasurer. Now math was never one of my strong points. After years of trying. unsu ccessfully, to reconcile my checking account with the bank's records, I simply accepted the bank's statement, and that is the way I handled the city's money. I did my best to get an accurate count, and then handed it on to Jlm. Then the independent auditor arrived to go through the city's books. The auditor was a man everyone called Robbie, short for Robinson or Robertson. He was nice, polite and smiled a lot as he sat there day after day, going through the Police Department records and my records, making little check tn.alks with a red pencil. Finally, the audit was over. Robbie came to me. He was no longer smiling. "Bob, the books don't balance." That didn't surprise me. uHow much are they offl" I asked. curious as to how close I got to the right amount "Eleven cents.• A year of receipts, and I'm off 11 cents? By Todd Karella Nothing says summer fun more than having your very own beach house, or at least that's what KIIS·FM 002.n counted on when it launched its Summer Beach House promotion on the Balboa Peninsula earlier this summer. The radio station has been FUN STUFF COSTA MESA TRAINS ON THE TRACKS On the third weekend pf each month, engineers climb aboard their trains and travel on three miles of track at Fairview Part to display their steam and diesel broadcasting live from the house on weekends since Memorial Day and plans to continue until its Labor Day Blowout this weekend. After spending the last four summers broadcasting from a Venice Beach location, station officials decided to move to a hipper, cooler Orange County location. "And, of course, the most beautiful setting in Orange County is Newport Beach," said Vice President of Marketing Von Freeman. "I love It. DOROTHY BELlER Costa Mesa Walking to school doesn't wcxk for some I couldn't disagree with columnist Steve Smith more (Family Time, •A snow job on why kids don't walk to school," Sunday). We would love to walk to school, but we live one and a half blocks from school, Mariners Elementary. We live in Eastside Costa Mesa and Mariners is in Newport on Irvine Avenue, so my kids have to cross Irvine Avenue. ' All of the streets that are right across from the school don't have signals, so we would have to go flJ 19th Street, which isn't very far, but once they cross at 19th, which does have a crossing guard but is still very dangerous because people tum right on the red light even if there's a crossing guard in the crosswalk because people are always in such a hurry, they would still have to walk along Irvine Avenue to the front of the school where people are going, and I'm not exaggerating, like 60 mph. It's so incredibly dangerous. So although mythlldren would love to walk to school or ride their bikes, and I would also like that too, we don't feel safe at all doing it. So it ls absolutely rldlculous that l, along with the five other families wboae chlldren attend Mariners on my bJock alone, have to get 1n our cars and drive and become part of the very heavy traftic problem at Mariners mementary. I live between Baker Street and Fairview Road in the Paularlno Avenue area. which is Mesa North, and I've notlced an inaease in the lines too ("Long Beach flights rattle West Costa Mesa," Thursday). I understand that Long Beach Airport has increased ftigbts and some of these planes are low eno~ that you can read the niambers on them and you can also tell who they are, and it's either UPS, FedEx or now it's Jet Blue. I'm not too happy about this, but l think a lot of this Is going to happen more and more. Because El Thro didn't get through, they're going to Increase the flights into John Wayne. It reminds me of when I used to live in Southwest Los Angeles and they brought the jets into Los Angeles lnternationaJ Airport. I wasn't too comfortable with that either, so I'm not comfortable with this. We just moved to Mesa Verde Crom the Eastside to get away from the Oigbts and the noise on Santa Ana Avenue, ~well as the traffic, and now, here we are, with just as bad of a sound and it's really upsetting me because it wasn't this way before and I was wondering what we can do to have those Oights maybe pushed out over the coastline a little bit It's only a mile away. I wouldn't th.Ink. I don't know the air patterns, but I'd like to see something in the paper about what we residents of the Westside can do about having those flights moved over a little bit. What a noise. I don't blow why the planes fty over Costa_ Mesa, why they take that route rather· than the regular ones that the normal planes leaving John Wayne would take. Anyway, for whatever reason. l would think the city could do something. monitor this or tab into consideration the impact that it would create later on down the road if they allow the planes that are heading to Long Beach to continue. We i.n the neighborhood have been just complaining about it It is a serious quality of life problem and maybe include safety concerns as well. First off, the public relations officer at Long Beach Airport, Sharon ~-Jackson, \s badly mistaken about her sense of height. These are coming in far lower than the 4,000 feet that she saJd My al.dine pilot friends lMng in the neighborhood said they are coming in far less than that - perhaps 2,000 feet or less. I thinJc we're just at the tip of the iceberg with this problem in that these flights are going to be increasing heavily because of how difficult it is for LAX and how friendly Long Beach is to get in and out of. So the 6ights are going to come up, and they become all the more o' a problem because the quantity comes up. The planes used to By in over the ocean and they came in over industrial areas in South Long Beach and landed at the airport. and they were of no problem to anyone; now they're coming 1n over West Costa Mesa and Mesa Verde on an increasing frequency. Morning, day. nighttime - they're getting louder because they're flying lower, and we noticed the fallout in contamination and pollution as well -particularly if you have white paint, you see all of the stains of dark tarnish coming from the aircraft. There ts also a safety concern as people will recall the DC-9 th.at crashed in a neighborhood in Cetrltos was inbound to Los Angeles. that was an Aero-Mexico Flight in August 1986, and there's also the 727 that was inbound to San Diego that crashed into a neighborhood, so the safety concerns are there as well. These all could be avoided by pushing the aircraft back out over the ocean and coming in over a shoner distance of homes. So what can Costa Mesa residents do about this? We can get the City Council to get after it, to study it, be aware of it. We can get Rep. Dana Rohrabacher's office to intercede with the Federal Aviation AdminJsttation. we can go directly after the FM and its air traffic control people. along with Long Beach Airport operations, and let them know our concerns, and also the airlines that are operating these flights. Davis, who starred at Southern Cali- fornia College (now Vanguard Univer- sity), was 55-75 in five seasons at CdM, •• including CIF Southern Section playoff appearances in 2001and2000. He said he values his experiences with the Sea Xlngs. but bas longed to coach a boys program. "The (CdM) group I'm leaving is an awesome group, with the strongest in- coming freshman class they've had since I've been there," Davis said. "But Westminster is a perfect flt for me, right now. I'm excited about the challenge of building a n(!'W program all over again. I know it's going to take a lot of work. "Whoever takes over at CdM, though is walking into a gold mine." Davis is a walk-on with the lions, though he teaches at a nearby elemen- tary school and plans to begin teaching at Westminster High next fall Westmin- steJ, which has had little success in boys basketbalf since the 1970s, will com- pete against Estancia and Costa Mesa, among others, 1n the Golden West League this season. We start with conditioning from 8- 10, then have our defensive practice from 10-noon," said Noonan, begin· ning his second season at the Eagles helm with his typical optimism. "We have lunch from noon-1, then prac- tice special teams from 1-2. We work on offense from 2-4, then we sit down and eat as a team. We have burgers (Monday), Tuesday and Thursday is piua and Wednesday and Friday we have Mexican food." Noonan said the meals help team bonding and are also a fun way to end the day's activities. There were only two players on the team, and men's golf coach Barry Wal- lace was playing catch-up, as he toolc over for Gordie Fltzel, who retired. However, AthJetic Director Fred Hokanson and his adminis- ttation made the decision to lceep the program alive. The Pi- rates competed in matches last year, but they did not score. One year later, OCC women's golf has returned. And, this time the Pi- rates will score. They have a full squad, and Wallace is excited about the sea- son. "The administtation made. a great choice in keeping the pro- gram," said Wallace, a fixture at OCC. where be began the men's soccer program in 1978 and bas coached baseball. soccer and badminton and golf, and was the athletic director. "The school kept it going with the Idea that we would promote It in the fu. ture. We're looldng for good things in the future." Wallace said he expects the women's golf program to im- prove in participation numbers. He experienced the same prob- lem with his men's team, but that situation bas been resolved. Wallace never bas a problem with bis men's team's numbers. Plus, the OCC women's team is already starting to show Im· provements this year. The Pirates will mostly feature Marilyn Pope, a freshman wbo is a member of the Newport Beach Country Oub member, as their No. 1 player. "She shot in the 70s in the quallfylng round (last} week." Wallace said "She's wry Intelli- gent I expect her to be in the top group of the conference."
