:Elderly woman hits 13 with car
An 87-year-old woman hit 13 pedestrians
Monday when she lost control of her car.

BAUDA ISIAND -Thirteen
people were injured Monday,
when an elderly driver plowed
Into a crowd as she headed onto
the Balboa Island ferry, police
said.
Pandemonium hit the ferry
landing just before I p.m., when
87-year-old Mary Nash drove her
1997 burgundy Volvo onto a
crowded sidewalk.
Nash. who lives in Newport
Beach, lost control of her four-
door sedan as she drove toward
the BaJboa Island ferry. smashing
newspaper racks and moddng
down pedestrians before wedg-
ing her cac, which has an auto-
matic transmission, between two
sections of the dock.
Nash told police the car
lurched when she started the en-
gine to drive onto the ferry.
wShe swerved left onto the
sidewalk.· said Randy Scheerer, a
division chief with the Newport
Beach Fire Department
Nash was facing southbound
on Agate Avenue to board the
Balboa ferry, which crosses the
harbor's main channel between
the island and the peninsuJa
In the moments after the
crash, stunned onlookers rushed
to help those who were Injured.

"We were on the ferry and
heard a big boom," Dubow said.
"I went over and pulled a guy out
of the water.·
Injuries in the accident ranged
from serious to moderate, as the
victims were transported to
Western Medical Center in Santa
Ana and Hoag Hospital.
One person suffered a com-
pound fracture to the leg and an-
other could have sustained inter-
nal injuries, said Howard
Eisenberg. a traffic investigator
with the Newport Beach Police
Depart.menL
Immediately after the accident,
police closed the island to any ve-
hicles hoping to cross the Marine
Avenue bridge at Bayside Drive for
about an hour.
The cause of the accident is
still under investigation, Eisen-
berg said, but alcohol and medi-
cation were not being consid-
ered as a cause. He said Nash
may have hit the wrong pedal in
a mom ent of confusion.
"The driver accelerated out of
control,• Eisenberg said . ·111e
age issue is not necessarily a fac-
tor. She c:ert.ainJy was lucid and
aware of what happened.·
Nash was not arrested or cited.

Kendell Minor, who lives in
Redlands, jogged down to a life-
guard shack to ask if it was per-
missible to cook up some
chicken, ribs and hot dogs at one
of the beach 6re pits.
He was given the green light
"We've got the family out here,"
Minor said, adding that he was
accompanJed by four other fami-
lies. "The kids have to start school

A parenting class at Coastline Community College puts a new spin on an old idea by
inviting children to attend with their parents for an interactive learning experience

teaching parents how to raise
their children, without their
children present.
Coastline Community College
puts a twist on the traditional
delivery of parenting claMeS ~
inviting parents and their kids to
take the claMeS together at its
branch in Costa Mesa
This way, preschoolers have
an abundance of activities to
choose from while parents
watch their children develop,
glean valuable skills and meet
others in the same stage of par·
enthood. ,
"You get to learn about your
child because you're in that
safe environment," said in·
structor Diana Jason. "You get
to be with them, but can bang
back a llttJe bit and observe."
On a recent Thursday morn-
ing. 2-year-old Keaton St.agge-
meier was playing with a trac-
tor in the playground sand box
when he was joined by Jason
Gong. aJso 2.
As the boys played. fully ab-
sort>ed in the sandbal world
around them. their moms intro-
duced themselves to each other
and struck up a conversation.
"I love the opportunity to be
here with (Keatonl and watch
him grow and see what he
gravitates toward," said his
mother, Melanie.
The 16-week class includes
lectures like "Building Respon-
sibility in Preschoolers" and
field trips to places like Cold
Stone Creamery in Newport
Beach.

cationa throughout the city.
Despite expensive recruit-
ment strategies such aa in-
creased advertising, salary

city had been unable to fill va-
cant crossing guard posi-
tions. City leadera said cross-
ing guards are a crucial 11fety
element and the positions
must be filled.
To solve ~th problems of
recruitment and retention,
staff suggested 1 contract with
All City Management Services.
All existing crossing guards
for the city were also hired on
by the company.

The council Is expected to

The owners of the conten-
tious Aviemore Terrace home,
who were previously denied
pennission to build a second-
story addition to their West-
side home, will be bad( in
front of council members to-
night, asking them to recon-
sider.
John and Debbie Clark will
ask the council to take another
look at their project, which
calls for the building of a sec-
ond-floor master suite and ex-
pansion of the ground floor for
a breakfast nook, kitchen and
study -designs that would
create their dream home, they
say.
The proposed addition
raised the Ire of neighbors
who said the resulting home

view of the ocean but would

natlonwide energy-saving pro-
gram to the city to power up
their efforts to begin new con-
servation techniques.
Planning commissioners
had outlined energy conserva-
tion as one of their chief goals
and have formally.recom·
mended the City Council pass
a law that encourages new city
buildings to take part in the
Environmental Protection
Agency's Energy Star pro-
gram. Private buildings wou1d
also be encouraged to take
part but participation would
not be mandatory.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Expect the majority of the
council to be on board. But
considering it is campaign
season and the energy conser-
vation program was in part the
brainchild of Planning Com-
mission Chairwoman Katrina
Foley -who is gunning for
either Councilman Gary Mona-
han or Mayor Linda Dixon's
seat on the council -there
could be some opposition
from the dais.

people would acknowledge him

"People walk by me and won't
even talk to me, I think they're
afraid or feel sorry for me, " Wy-
lie said. "I don't feel sorry for my-
self. This is me."

Bruce Wylie, a common sight to motorists and pedestrians throughout Costa Mesa, hangs out at
one of his favorite spots at the corner of Newport Boulevard and Bay Street on Thursday.
Wylie, 44, was born with the
condition and has lost the use of
his legs. His parents moved from
Southern Illinois to Santa Ana
when he was 4 so be could anend
a school for disabled children.
WyHe slarted using a wheel-
chair when he was 18 and
started . wheelchair racing in
1989. He competed in the Long
Beach Marathon six times. He
then became inspired to try the
Los Angeles Marathon after see-
ing it on 1v.
·The marathon was on 1V and
my mom came in my room and
showed me how it was going and
I said, 'I can do that' and did it
seven times," Wylie said proudly.
In 1997, he came in 55th in the
wheelchair dMsion, finishing in
two hours, 23 minutes and 19
seconds.

All four levels of the north·
west parking structure at John
Wayne Airport have been
closed, while the structure
undergoes a seismic retro-
fit. The parking structure, lo-

After he hurt his shoulder, he

scheduled to reopen in Octo-
ber. At that time, airport man-
agers are scheduled to close the
southwest parking structure for
similar work. The southwest
structure would reopen in April.
During the wort. travelers are
advised to use the east paddng
structure, known as Garage A2
and B2.

To ease the pain and prevent
more tearing, Wylie's doctor rec-
ommended he switch to an elec-
tric wheelchair. But Wylie's inde-
pendent spirit prevailed, as did
his need for speed.
"J just don't give up," Wylie
said. ·An electric wheelchair is
too slow for me."
Wylie has worked in the past.
He did a stint renting out movies
at a record store but said he was
laid off because he was com-
puter illiterate.. Since then, he
said he has been afraid to apply
fo r another job.
But he says he has oo desire to
learn computer slcills. he's a peo-
ple person.

tally accepting of his condition.
"I've met a lot of people who
have had motorcycle acci-
dents," Wylie said. "They have
I.his chip on their shoulders. I
handle it better than most peo-
ple who have walked before.·
Wylie said he is content to Live
his life the way he sees fit -
watching the steady Stream of
traffic as people flit back and
forth absorbed in their daily
routine.
"I like the way I am." Wylie
said. "It doesn't bother me a biL"

The Westside should attract
and support a population

business and retail infrastruc-

Apparently Fawcen consid-
ers a "great balance" to be
South Coast Plaza on one side
of the fulcrum and soup
kitcheus on the other. I lis su-
perficia I statistics are anything
but pos itive when compared
to the coastal area we live in.
The average wage paid by
his 1,600 businesses employ-
ing 17.000 people is a paltry
$29,()()(> per year on average. If
you subtract the top wage
earners that manage and run
the blninesses and, probably
don't live on the Westside, thJs
leaves the majority of workers
with poverty wages that do.
It should be emphasi7.ed
that this is the top of the area's
economic ladder. Eve~
trickles down from there -
aummy markets, liquor
stores, bars, junkyards. over-
crowded and high-density
housing and fast food hang-
outs. Where are the restau-
rants, clothing stores and
markets he refers to? There's
nothing on the Westside that
remotely resembles a decent
restaurant, clothing store or
market.
I have to assume Fawcett is
a neighbo1 . f Jean Forbath in
Mesa Verde. ·1 he majority of
middle-and upper-income
families that live on the West-
side certainly didn't depend
on its poverty economics to
achieve their status and it will
take an infusion of more up-
per-income families in single-
family residential areas to
support an appropriate
business and retail infrastruc-
rure. By necessity, most of
these incomes will be gener-
a ted outside of Costa Mesa.
The reality is that mr r

This wilJ be the ripple effect
that Fawcett fears but it will
drastically improve the entire
city. Until thJs happens, the
City of the Arts should be re -

Lewb Bradshaw, who by throwing for 788
yards and rushing for another 171, ac-
counted for nearly 54% of the Eagl.es' total

Additionally, Bradshaw, a 6-foot ·3, 183·
pound college prospect who will also st.art
at free safety, had a hand in 63.6% of the

18th hole and concluded the
round at 6-over-par 78. while
runner-up Towersey birdied
the last hole to finish two
shots off the pace.
Albright's tee shot at 18
found a bunker on the left
side of the fairway, but she
couldn't get out with her 9-
wood. Instead of unraveling.
she "just focused on a good
tempo to get out (with a 6-
lron) • and survived her most
difficult moment of the after·
noon.
On the front nine last year.
Albright made three pars in a
row on holes 3 through 5 to
take a one-shot lead in Tea
Cup Oasslc V. She never lost
the advantage.

Bradshaw has improved his
footwork and mechanics and
aims to cash in the experience
he gained last year.
"Lewis understands the game
a lot more this year." said Noo-
nan, who believes Bradshaw
will also benefit from a more ex-
perienced offensive line, which
has been well fortified by an off-
season weightJifting program.
"He'll be able to focus more on
