COMMUNITY COMMENTARY E-Z Lube in Newport isn't an easy sell and should not be By Laura Dietz Newport Beach Councilman Dennis O'Neil made it very clear to the · president of E-Z Lube that he didn't believe there would be support in Newport Beach for E·Z Lube if the company had three months or a year to try to gamer it rNewport Beach City Council wrap-up," Friday). Momenis before, the E-Z Lube representative, Ken Genser, had requested that the City Council grant a continuance until January 2003 to allow more time Mto educate the public." When the Planning \..ommission voted down the project in May, the City MAILBAG Try on someone ~lse's shoes before judging 1 was dismayed to read the letters written by the unhappy neighbors of the family who takes in special-needs kids and wishes to enlarge their home ("Building blocks: Aug. 28). As the wife of attorney Jack 11. Anthony, whose offices are in Santa Ana but serve people all over Southern CaJifornia, J have seen all kinds of children and adults who need care that very few people can or wiU provide. Some of his clients are children who have been disabled in accidents or tortured, abused and molested in foster care or group homes. Many of these kids are speciaJ needs kids, who are far more likely to be abused than the general population. The people who actuaJJy do take care of these kids deserve our utmost support. Otherwise, the kids could be scattered, left without special services, and their lives put at risk. at a far hlgher. financial cost to taxpayers than a lov.ing family setting. Jack and I have been humbled by the Council in June granted E-Z Lube a 60-day extension during which time to get any support. despite having already made presentations to the Corona del Mar Ownber of Commerce and Corona del Mar Residents Assn. boards with no indication of support from either. Councilwoman Nonna Glover provided some useful history of the experience of Ji.ffy Lube, on Mariner's Mlle, which she warned would have diftlculty making the site profitable because most residents, Glover added, utake their cars to the dealer." E-Z Lube President Mike Dobson addressed the council, claiming that he challenges his clients face, and by the devotion of those who care enough to take them on. Perhaps the lives of these complaining neighbors would be enriched beyond measure ~re they to leave their comfortable. "nonnal-sized" homes and take one of these children for a walk down the street or out for an ice cream cone. Then they might see why a family with nine special-needs kids need three people to help out, and what the parents aotually "do for a living." CHRISTINA ANTHONY Newport Beach Make Costa Mesa skate park work this time The front page news of thoughtful teaming between the Costa Mesa City Council and the Newport-Mesa Unified School District ("Costa Mesa skate park idea revived," Tuesday) is exi:;itillg. Let's hope that an agreement ca.n .be established quickly and the park planning and building set in motion quickly. Ten years have .slipp«:d away already. The park had the impression that the council would grant an extension and, at the last minute, it wasn't feasible for him "to bring people here who support the project.• The claim was made that the project was misunderstood, that he expected the coundl to vote on the "merits of the project" as opposed to pre<:onceJved notions. Councilman Steve Bromberg suggested that a two-week extension would give them time to contact their support.en. Again, O'Neil of Corona del Mar could not have made it clearer.
