T he weight of the enormous
memorial quilt on display at
the Costa Mesa
Neighborhood Community
Center today can only begin to
demonstrate the burden of the East
Coast attacks nearly a year ago,
project volunteers said.

a year after the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints un-
veiled plans for the county's first
Mormon temple. residents with
c;trong feelings on the project
had built up plenty of steam for

packed City Council chambers to
take part in the commission's
firs t public hearing on the
17,575-square-foot project,
slated to be built at 2300 Bonita
Canyon Drive.

have already made a number of

a thing of beauty and benefit to
neighbors for years to come.
"It's a very good and beautiful
design that will be a credit to
Orange County and all the peo-
ple who live near it." said Ralph
Martin, architect for the church.
Thursday's hearing was the
first step tn what is normally a
two-part process to consider a
use pemut. The maner LS ex-
pected to return to the Planrung
Commission on Oct. 3 for a final
vote.
If commissioners grant the
church a permit to b uild the
steeple in excess of area height
standards, it's almost inevitable
that the issue will come before •
the City Council
But if commissioners deny the
permit, the issue probably won't
JUSt go away. The church bas
gone to coun in the past in
places such as Belmont. Mass.,
where last year it won the right
to build a 70,000-square-foot
temple despite organired resi·
dent opposition.
In the case of the Newport
temple, a federal act could pro-
vide the grounds for a court case.

M arc Antoine is
Parisian-born,
lives in Spain
now, spends
about four
months of the year in the
United States and loves jazz
whether it's from New
Orleans or Africa.
The jazz guitarist's music
reflects this worldly
background, but Antoine
doesn't have to jet around
the globe to feel at home
music-wise.
Its everywhere and
nowherethatinsprration
strikes the musician, who
will perform today at the
Hyatt Newporter as part of
the hotel's Swnmer Jazz
Festival. Often, it's in the
most mundane places like
the kitchen or the staircase
where everyday counter tiles
or hollowed. dome ceilings
make for grt{at acoustics.
"There are places in the
house where [music) sounds
great," the 39-year-old said.
.. Usually when you have a
great sound and you feel
relaxed, if!spiration comes

Antoine, who enjoyed
success in the contemporary
jazz world in the mid·'90s
with his "Oassical Soul~
album, will play songs tdday
from his five records,
including tracks from his
new album "Cruisin."
"I know that he really has a
signature sound for the
classical guitar and he has a
lot of multicultural tlavorings
in it," said David Lockard,
director of food and beverage
at the Hyatt Newporter as
weU as organizer of the
series. "He just has an
all-around appeal from what
we call acid jazz to world
beat to hip hop."
Antoine agrees that when
it comes to music, he likes
and learns from anything
and everything.
"There's so many good
things, musically speaking, in
the world that it would be
stupid not to mix them
together as long as you like
them." he said. "The
problem is liking too many
things. That's pretty much
me."
After insisting it would be
impo~ible to state who he
was most influenced by,
Antoine chose several. As a
guitar player in the classical
world, he was most
Influenced by John Williams.
In the flamenco style, its
Paco de Lucia. But he loves
Mozart and Bach, too. he
said. .
"It's not necessarily only
guitar players," Antoine said.
"There are so many
influences. One guy was an
inspiration for six months
and then I discover
somebody else."
He first discovered the
guitar as a young boy. His

person to hear new sounds
that float out of Antoine's
box. The family, currently
just Marc. his wife and his
guitar, ls also expecting a

father-to-be expects his little
boy to become one of his
gteates1( musical influences.
Antolhe's goal as a guitarist
is to provide a sort of music
therapy.
"To mab music and to
realiu you can actually ease
people with your mutlc,"
Antoine said. •So that's a
huge goal actually."

A committee structured
under the Fair Political
Practices Act was formed lo
defeat Measure W. OnJy private
funds were used for the No on
W committee. It was
underfunded but ran a scrappy
campaign that resulted in
three of five supervisoriaJ
districts opposing Measure W.
The work conducted by my
firm and 41 pf9fessionals
performed on behalf of the
Airport Working Group was
reviewed' by three law firms for
compliance with all applicable
state law. ·
Tue working group's task
with the Newport Beach grant
funds was to educate Orange
County on the regional
importance of EJ Toro Airport
-r:iot campaign against
MeasureW.
Our educational program
was so effective that a Newport
Beach resident that had been
paid more than $330,000 by
the city of Irvine flied a lawsuit
to stop our efforts. We
coilecttveJy settled this la~
earlier this year.
For almost 20 years. I have
consulted to the Airport
Working Group Board of
Directors. Any fees paid to my
firm from city grant funds were
reviewed and approved by the
woddng group board, which
includes some of Newport's
most dedJcated volunteers like
Tom Naughton. Phil Arst,
Richard Tuytor, Anders
Folkedal, Tum Anderson and
17 other volunteers.
The contract between the
city and the Airport Working
Group stipulates that an audit
of the funds will be ronducted.
The audit provision was
included at the reqliest of
then-Mayor Gary Adams. The
audit iB not the brainchild of
Coundlman John Heffernan -
it is contractually required.
In fact, when the original
grant request and budget
was presented to the
aviation subcommittee. of
which Heffernan was a
member, he made it very
clear that he opposed the
expenditure. -·
Heffernan was provided
copies of all our educational
material throughout the
program. He never
commented, complained or
complimented. He was
~
regularly briefed by city staff
and lawyers.
The reference in the working
group's recent newsletter to
replacing politicians that have
surrendered on El Thro was
directed at certain members of
the state legislature -not
sitting Newport Beach council
members -that forget who
they represent
The Airport Working Group
is proud of pur efforts
working with the city of
Newport Beach. For the
nearly 20 years I have worked
for Airport Working Group,
every Newport Beach council
member has written personal
checks, attended meetings
and worked the politics of
aviation to protect our city.
Except one. .
The working groups loyal
volunteers will continue to
fight for Newport's residents
to extend the John Wayne
Airport Settlement Agreement
and pursue El Thro airport
through political and legal
avenues.
I appreciate Bell's take on
airport issues. All the No on W
committee needed was about
$2 million from private
donors and his columns
would read a little differently.

Mesa. I feel we have done a great
deal to improve our test scores.
We just completed several days
training on the best
research-based methods for
teaching reading to English
language learners. This isn't the
first time we have been trained in
this area and it won't be the last
At the risk of sounding both
flippant and simplistic, J say, "It's
the size, stupid.~ Lower the class
siz.e of all English and math
classes throughout the district to
no more than 25 students to one
teacher ("Testing divide remains
. at district schools," Aug. 30). Last
year, I taught a class of 4 I
teenagers. Some of my
colleagues teach up to 45. That's
criminal.
Also, school board member
Wendy Leece needs a bit of an
English grammar review. It's not
"less [students) are moving
behind," but rather, fewer are

We have also received training
in strategies to enable English
language leamers access to the
core curriculum. F.ach teacher
on our staff is fully credentialed
and has high expectations for
our students.
The majority of our students
are English language learners
who come from homes where
their parents did not complete
high school. Since there is a high
correlation between test scores
and parent education, Costa
Mesa will probably never catch
up with Newport Beach.
All we can do is continue lo
improve our test scores little by
little. One way to raise the test
scores in Costa Mesa would be
to level the playing field. Most of
our students do not come to
school knowing English or
havi.Qg had preschool.
Most students in Newpon
Beach have a five-year head start
in English language
development and most have had
one or ~o years of preschool.
We need a two-year,
stale-sponsored preschool to
help our students catch up with
their peers. We need on-site
parent education classes to help
parents help their children. We
also need the community to
understand that test scores are
only one measure of a successful
education.

Newport Harbor High and Orange
Coast College, averaged 46.3 yards
per punt as junior last season, which
led to consensus Division I-AA
All-American honors. as well as
growing speculation about his
promising professional future.
He averaged 51.0 yards on three
punt.s in the Bengals' 48-7 win over
Montana Western Aug. 29.
If the 6-foot-4, 225-pound senior
· can continue to display the
consistently powerful leg that has
been his ttademark since bursting
onto the scene as a Newport Harbor
sophomore, former Corona del Mar
High standout Jeff Thomuon may

ing the game-winning score on a
four-meter shot with 40 seconds
left in the team's 11-10 win over
France. He also had six <Irawn
ejections and one field block as
the U.S. went 3-2-1, to win the
bronze.
The team. made up of 12 boys
from across the U.S .. competed
against international learns such
as BrctZiJ A, New Zealand, Argen-
tina, Bra7jJ B and France. Brazil A
took the gold medal while New
Zealand won the silver.
"(Bury) is definitely one of the
strongest 2-meter men in Divi-
sion I in the county and he has
improved," Lynch said.
Joining those lhree will be sen-
iors Jay Thompson. a two-meter
guard who transferred to New-
port for last season from River-
side, along with Olarlie I locken-
berry, Brent Annstrong. Gavin
Schmidt, and goalie Nathan
Mclain, who started last season
but may be getting some compe·
tition from sophomo11e Michael
Robinson. who Lynch said
"played really weU" filling in for
Mclain during the I lawaii tour-

have compared Jorth to Peter
Belden.
"I !e's on that level, he's playing
a lot," said Lynch of the compari-
sons between Jorth and Belden.
"His best quality is his perimeter
shootmg."
Lynch. who coached water
polo at O>sta Mesa for five years
and at Capistrano Valley for
seven years, said it's "very rare"
for a freshman to be playing var-
sity, but water polo age group
programs that have swfaced in
recent years in the Newport-
Mesa area have allowed kids to
begin playing water polo at
younger ages.
"It's definitely a key thing.·
