fans tucked into rheir respective
booths at the Corner Office sports
bar in Costa Mesa to wa tch USC
face.off with Michigan in
Thursday's Rpse Bowl. But when
USC scored a touchdown. the
ears i.oon learned what had
escaped the eye: This is a USC
. town and. here, Trojan fans mean
business.
"It's our local team," said
Edward Lopez, a Santa Ana
resident. whose allegiance to USC
goes beyond mere geography. The
Maler Oei graduate can count
three of his feUow alumni among
the USC starling lineup. "It's
pretty exciting," he said.
Longtime USC fans•and recent
converts alike had a broad range
of reasons why they lov~ their
team. '
"USC is much more
~retentattft of the community
than someone like UCLA." said
Eugene Vargas of Mission Viejo.
"And it's a very good team this
year, .. said Erica BagnaU. who
traveled from Santa Ana to enjoy
the game with friends. .

Let's see if my prediction
comes true because I am
going boating tom orrow
while mos t of the counLry
is shoveling the snow off
their sidewalks.
Normally. this tim e of
year I like 10 repo rt the new
boating laws that go into
effect after Jan. I . bur I can
only find a couple of
regulations affecting the
comm ercial boat
operations. Those changes
primarily deal with new
homeland security issues. I
will keep looking for any
new laws affccring the
recreational boater and if
you know of any new laws
let me know so I can report
it in this column.
The news Item making
the headlines in C.alifornia
is the increase in the State
Park launch ramp fees. The
parks departmen t is
basically doubling its
boating fees beginning July
I, 2004, however. from
w ha t I can determine. 1J1e
fees are now in line with
o ther boating launch ramp
facilities. The day fee will
innease to between $5 lO
$8 and the annual boat
pass will be $75.
Yes. using the term
doubling gives the
impression that the fees are
going to skyrocket but
tht!se fee have been low
for years compared to what
ii costs to maintain the
infrastructure. The goal of
our governn\ent should he
to keep the costs affordable
and al a minimum for
access to our waterways. I
would just like to see an
accounting of where l}ie
reve nue generated by
boating is acrually spent
o nce it reaches our state
Capitol.

lem yet."
Coyotes arc getting bolder and
are not afraid of coming dose to

ocean where they both Uve, Kobe
Bryant and Karl Malone go to work. as
they call it, for the Los Angeles Lakers.
But the 2003-04 season has been
much more than work for MaJone and
Bryant. who are Newpon Coast
residents. In so many ways their
respective seasons have been like a
whirlwind, even more so for Bryant,
obviowly.
It has been a trying season for
Bryan!, who has been accused of rape.
Malone has deaJ1 with his own adversity

Malone
suddenly was
overcome with
emotional
pain. His
mother, Shirley,
rued of a
massive heart
anack.
Malone's
season with the
Lakers did not
begin with aU
the flash and
glamour that
had been
expected.
However,
determined,
Malone built
strength and
endurance
during the
off-season,
especially in
that month of
August.
He did so to
prepare his
40-year-old
body for the
upcoming
season. He did
so because rhere was a reason he came
to Lakerland. There was reason he took
a $1 7.8 mllUon pay cut. The reason: an
NBA championship. That has been
elusive for Malone.
Dreams of a ·title seemingly hung in
the balance a few nights before
Olristrnas when the Lakers hosted the
uns. A hush came over a sellout crowd
at Staples Center when the NBA's
second aU-time leading scorer went
down with an injury and grimaced in
pain. In 18 seasons, Malone, also
known as "The Mailman," had missed
only six games because of injury.
But Malone was a bit fearful and
definitely disappointed with the injury
Sunday night. With 8:09 remalnlng in
Lhe first quarter, Malone was Injured.
After Malone attempted an outside
shot. the Suns' Scott WIJUams backed
into him and the two fell. Williams
appeared to land on Malone's knee.
Williams said he heard a pop.

Malone said he became anxious
while the Lakers played because he
remains motivated to fulfill his goal of
winning an NBA title. Against the Suns
he learned of patience because
previously he was under the impression
of doing whatever it takes to be our

"To hopefully win a championship,
that's the reason I came." Malone said.
"To be around a group of guys who
want to compete every night."
Malone turned down offers from

with much skepticism.
Basketball is my favorite spon. but.
truth be told, the NBA is not what it
was. Don't get me wrong I was quite
grateful and fonunate to cover the
Lakers and have an opponunity to
interview pro athletes, but for me the
skepticism remained.
I have this view that NBA players are
more individualistic than ever. NCM

opinion, while the NBA is about
showmanship and
statistics. I'm not a
total purist, because
I have been one to
enjoy some good
trash talking. but I
have had that view
of the NBA.
My views were
challenged Sunday
night after .watching
the Lakers defeat the
Suns, 107-IOl. I saw STEVE
a broken man in Karl VIRGEN
Malone.
This was not the same Mailman, the
one who has been seen with his
signature one-hand dunk, whlle the
other hand touches the back of his
head. Not the same Mailman who was •
intimidating and imposing.
He had injured his knee early in the •
game and afterward he was worried
that he was done for a long period of
ti.me, even worse, the entire season.
At first it appeared he held back tear~.
There was fear on his face and he told
reporters he had never felt this way in
his whole lue. 0
I've never been one to say Lhat I'm a
Malone hater, but I took a bit of
pleasure in the fact that he never won a :
championship. That is until Sunday
night came along and I saw the pain in
Malone's eyes. The hunger he had to
win an NBA championship had come
into question and he was just not the
same man.
It figures the Mailman would be the
one to change my opinion of the NBA.
He is or the old school. He is a
40-year-old that respects the game, so I ·
learned. Hey, what can I say? I'm young.
I've been In the business for a little over
three years.
But back to Malone. There he was
with cameras and tape recorders in his
face. His knee was taped up and he
looked like he just wanted 10 scream in
fmstration. But he held back and
answered every question.
