In their own words
Members of the Newport-Mesa community tell us how Sept. 11 has changed their lives. From the
firefighter who wondered what it woutd be like to be on the scene to the school teacher, their essays
that follow could probably be written in any American town or city, but it illustrates just how deeply
the nation was affected by this tragic event one year ago, 3,000 miles away.

S ept 11 opened my eyes as ro jwc how
important my )ob really Is to the American
people
Being a firefighter just seemed like an everyday
)ob to me until there was a crashing reality check
that hit me that morning.
We ~ived an early morning 911 call for a
medical aid. We ran the call, and returned to the
station as we would on My other call. but when we
aJTtved at the station I remember the frantic tone
of my captain u he said. "Tu.mer. come here!"
I ran into the lV room where I saw the
aftermath of the ft.rst plane that aubed into the
YtU1d Trade Center. I did not ,..Jiz.e the
magnitude of this whole day until I saw the second

After the news began covering the add111onal
crashea that look pllioe at the Pmtagon and m
rural Pe\mylvania I started to wonder. "What's
next?'" That is when the raUty of my )ob n-aDy
sank in.

Hershey
Hershey, a 1 112-year-old
spayed female cat, was one of
three rescued animals from the
shelter's death row last week.
She is now ln need of a home,
said DiAnna P!aff-Martln, foun-
der of the Community Animal
Networt in Newport Beach.
Like Hershey, many of the
animals that a.re rescued are
cats and large dogs. However,
sometimes those anLmals also
include anall dogs.
"We raray have 5mall dogs,"

urday, we will have avaJlable a
10-to 12-week-old Shiatsu/
Pomeranian mix puppy."
The puppy was purchased by
a Costa Mesa woman who will
not be able to continue caring

resident is making up for lost time not
only by tying up her toe-shoes on a
regular basis but by ensuring that
local children are introduced lo the
classic art form while they still have

Ballet Montmartre in Costa Mesa for

For many years, Libby Wal-
lace and her family stopped
in to Hobie Sports to 61
themselves with boots,
bindings and poles for an-
nual sJci nips.
No more..
Stunned by the sight of
the suddenly mothballed
shop, on a drive down East
Coast Highway after Labor
Day weekend, Wallace said
she was saddened that Ho-
bie had closed ltli doors.
"It was sort of a land-
mark.· Wallace said. "It was
there for a long time.·
Wallace, now 41, remem-
bers her first trip 10 the
'>hop wi1h her own parents
back when she was a lJ·
year-old girl learning 10 ski.
After a blow-out clear-
ance sale on the Labor Day
weekend. the proprietors
dosed the doors for good.
Neatly fitted strips of brown
paper taped to the window
ob6cure the interior of the
4,000-square-foot shop. A
f riendJy. yet cryptic, mes-
sage -"Thanks for 28
Great Years" -is scrawled
in blue-and-white paint on
the window.
The shop i.s next door to
the closed Port Theater at 283i Eru.t Coast Highway.
Why the shop's two own -
en; closed their doors after
so many years remains
somewhat of a mystery.

Mullen, who both live in
Newport Beach. to run the
shop. which opened in
1974. The two men brought
their families and dogs into
the shop on weekends and
created a buzzing commu
njty atmosphere.

company that owns the
land, Welton & Co .. said the
two would not be available

images of Islam in the U.S.

A s an imam of the Islamic faith. and like
many of my fellow Americans. I was
devastated by the heinous events of Sept.
11 . Undoubtedly, the criminal atlacks on our
country were the most painful events ever
experienced in modern history. I shared in my
country's pain and loss that 1errible day, but for
me, it increased rwofold when I heard that the
perpetrators were Musllm.
ln all of my aduJI Life, I have preached the
message of Islam, which is founded on peace,
justice and the sanctity of all lives. Nothing in
Islam. neither the Koran nor the teachings of
Prophet Mohammad. pennJts the taking of an
innocent person. To the contrary. Islam equals
the mwder of an innocent life to that of
murdenng manlund.
America was auacked that dreadful day and so
was my religion -and unavoidably all Muslimt..
in particular American Muslims. Shortly after the
tragedy. our mosque became inundated with
many Muslim and non-Muslim callers. Some
callers were condemning and blaming Islam
while others were seeking splrirual comfort and
support for the Muslim community.
Since Sept. 11, my duty as an Islamic leader
had taken a turning point; rather than spiritually
enlightening people to God, I found myself
engaged in countless forums and al religious
institutes defining the true meSAge of Islam -
lnvalidating its rumored and tainted images.
With all sincerity, I wanted my countrymen to
know that American MusUms were grieving
along with other Americans, and that their loss
was also our loss. But most of all. I wanted to
deliver the message that Islam adamantly
opposes any form of terrorism.
Tuday, my sermons continue to highlight
Islamic teachings. which honor life, preach
harmony and peace and give dignity to au
people. I have prayed that my presence and
words throughout the year ha~ been a healing
hand for others.

Surprisingly. my morning routine was
familiar to me by now. including the 5 a m
alarm. wh.ich stirred me from a slttp much
shorter than the ones I enjoyed only two week.,
earlier when summer was in ~eMion and clas!>f.'!>
were not. Noticing that the clothes I had 'let Olll
the night before were still waiting for me to be
ironed, l dutifuJly pulled out the ironing board
and iron and I turned on the television lo catl'h
some news before leaving for Newport I larbor
High. The iron wasn·t even hot to the tom·h
before I knew that this wasn't gomg to he a
normal news day.
Though tht' words "Brealang News· were hard
to miss. it was the lmage of the billowing black
smoke clouds pouring from one of the World
Trade Center buildings In New York City thJt
stopped me cold. Among the endlts5 amuunh o r
speculation coming from the W~t Coast
newscasters was the message that a plane had
hit the Nonh Tower of the World T radt' Center
Images of a plane hHting one of the bu1ldmgs
were Oashed across the screen.
At first. both the newscasters and I 1hough1
that the television producer was recycling I.he
tape to keep the audience lntere$ted Only when
one of the newscasters reali1ed that we were aJJ
watching a live feed did I understand thal a
second plane had JUSt hit the South Tower. I wa~
overtaken by the reallzadon that I had JUSt seen
hundreds of people die Instantly on live
television. I sat at the edge or the bed stunned
On my way out the door. I gave my two children.
sleeping the sleep of the blissfully unaware. a
nss and a hug. thinking that their world would
not be the same after what I had ju!>t 1>een on Lhe
television.
For the first time since my fust days as a
teacher. I was apprehensive about going to work.
Driving to school, I wondered how would I
handle this with my students. how much time
would be allocated for questions and discussion,
and planed out an explanation of evenls that
would need to be said for those who had not
watched the television while eucuting their own
morning routines. My ad hoc lesson planning
was lnterrupted by the rad.lo anforming me that
the Pentagon had been hit and that other
suspicious planes were being tracked. Confwuon
turned to anger as I made the left tum into the
faculty parking lot. and I tried to focus more
Intently on what the day would be like In my
classes. It was 7 a.m. -45 minutes befoft 2, J 00
students would be on campus aslung quest.Jons
and wanting reassurance.
The journalism students had aJready arrived
ln Jim Crotwell's room across from mine and
their focused stares at his televialon screen told
me they alttady knew what wu happening.

and worts out of Jolul Wayne Airport.
was scheduled to fty Ori Sept. 11, 2001
but her girlfriend filled in for her.
Her job has changed.more
dramatically in the past year than in all
13 prior years combined.
"They've giwn us a lot more
additional training," she said. "I don't
think this will happen again, the Bight
attendants won't let it happen again."
Palmquist wouldn't go into details
about the type of training that she's
received since the attacks for fear that
terrorists will learn what airline
employees are taught to watch out for.
Shortly after the attacks, an
American Airlines Bight attendant
appeared on television and discussed
her safety training in detail. Airline
officials were shocked and so were her
co-workers, Palmquist said.
Airline passengers will play a key
part in preventing such allacks in the
future, Palmquist said. Their attitudes
are completely different now.
·I think a lot of people are nicer to
each oilier.~ she said.
Passengers have learned to not
worry about the little thln~ so much.
she said. Delayed Oight times and
small inconveniences are thin~ they
have learned to deal with. •
Passengers are also looking at other
people on the plane. They make sure
to be more aware of their
surroundin~. Palmquist said. That
wasn't something that passengers did
before.
Sept. 11 did more than change the
job description. Palmquist said. It also
upcet job security. The terrorist attacks
coupled with a stagnant economy
have made the airline industry an
unstable one.
Alght attendants aren't the only
ones affected by the tough economic
times, she said. Pilots. mechanics.
runway personnel and people
employed throughout the airport all
feel lt. ·
·People don't realize that everybody
gets hun. • she said. •Everybody loses
thelr jobs."
Palmquist hasn't lost her job, but
many people will, she predicts.
Because or her long service with the
company she's been able to lake an
extended leave.
Sept. 11 is more than the day
America was attacked for her, it is also
her son AJex's birthday. The
43-year-old mother and wife was
already on leave to care for her
I -year-old son. She asked for more
time off. Rather than laying off
employees. American Airlines has done
its best to accommodate anyone with
time-off requests, she said
She now lies occasionally, when
she's needed. and has Oown twice this
month. AJex turns two this year and
Palmquist knows that one day be will
realize the seriousness or that day, but
it won't be happening for quite some
time.
