Determination Program CAVID)-the

On Monday. AVID teacher Robert
Sterling focused on the importance of
mutual support and encowagement
by asking the AVID students to work in
teams and choose the characteristics
they consider necessary for success.
"I want them to feel some obligation

The local chapter of a state·
wide group has appointed
Newport Beach Councilman
Gary Adams to the Orange
County Airpon Land Use Com·
mission.
At a Thursday meeting, the
Orange County chapter of the
League of California Cities
named Adams, a former mayor,
to the panel.
Adams replaces council col-
league Gary Proctor on the
seven-member panel. Proctor
resigned from the commission
earlier m the summer.
Tom Naughton, a Newport
Beach resident and president
of the Alrpon Working Group,
also holds a seat on the com·
mission, which makes recom·
mendatlons to the Board of Su-
pervisors about planning
matters at John Wayne Airport.
Outside of his civic duties,
Adams works as a traffic and
civil engineer at the Parsons
Corporation, which is based in
Pasadena.
"My background makes me
pretty well-suited to it," Adams
said of the appointment.
In his role on the commis
sion, Adams represents New·
port Beach, Costa Mesa and Ir-
vine. ..#
Adams is nearing the end of
his first term on the council re·
presenting District 4. He re-
placed former mayor John
Noyes in 1998. He will seek a
second term in November.
Prior to his election to the
council, Adams served as a
member of the city's Planning
Commission.

Colombian singer and song·
writer Soraya will kick off the
Survivor Ceremony at the 2002
Susan G. Kamen Breast Cancer
Foundation Orange County
Race for the Cure on Sunday.
The performer -who has
opened for such popuJar artists
as Natalie Merchant. Sting and
Alanis Morrissene -lost her
mother, grandmother and aunt
to breast cancer and was diag·
nosed with the disease two year
ago. She also will share her per·
sonal experience and fight
against the disease.
Soraya has performed with
the Kamen Foundation on a
number of occasions as part of
an ongoing alliance with them
and a personal mission to edu-
cate women.
The Orange County race is
one of the top five races for
raising money out of 112 across
the country. Last year's race,
which was the largest thus far
with more than 30,000 partici-
pants, raised more than $1.5
million, adding to the S7.7 mil·
lion the race has raised over the
last 10 years.

outreach, education, screening.
diagnostic and treatment pro-
grams receive 75% of the net
proceeds while the other 25%
supports the Kamen Founda-
tion Research Program.

Dale Earnhardt memorial will
take place at the Cruisin' For A
Cure Hot Rod fund-raiser at the
Orange Counry Fairgrounds on
Sept. 28.
The memorial, a 1953 01evy
Sedan Delivery. wiJJ tour the
country in honor of the seven-
time NASCAR champion and in
an effort to raise money for
prostate cancer research .

play of antique fire trucks, hot

team earns awards
The All -Squad 01eer Team at
Newport Harbor High School
took home a slew of awards at
the recent Professional USA
(United Spirit Assn.) Elite Oleer
Camp held at UCLA. The team
competed for the first time
against other schools on the
West Coast.
The varsity squad earned the
"Most Improved" award; the
junior varsiry team snagged the
"Superior" award and both
squads won the "Spint" award
on the second night. Four jun-
ior varsity members -Kate
Curry. Nina Taylor, Jessica Co-
chems and AshJey Warncke -
took third place in the stunc
challenge.
The ch eer teams are sup-
ported by advisor Jennifer Cil-

Back in 1995, the district
locked in the bask water rate at
SI .33 per unit. After the state's
2001 energy crisis caused spikes
in energy costs, the ageocy
added a 10-cent energy sur-
charge, which was later lowered
to 8 cenlll. The 8 cents extra has
been incorporated into the new
rate u an ongolng cost, Bock-
miller said.
"Electrlciry is still expensive,"
BOOkJniller said. "We buy it from
(Southern California) Edison.
Edison's prices haven't dropped."

Ben Blue was a regular, and he
had enough of a folJowing that
he eventually opened hiS own
club, although I must admit with
a certain intellectual honesty
that he didn't really add a lot to
the show at Slapsie Maxie's..
Then there was a husband and
wife team who. for the life of me,
l can't remember by name. He
played piano. and she sang, but
not too well. So, it wasn't
Broadway, but it waa all we had,
and as J said, Tully ruchards was
worth the price of admission.
Actually, they probably would
have paid Katie to come. Katie
loved to laugh. She must have

during the Depression. I'd never
heard of such a thing. but Katie
described how during those dire
times when life was miserable
for so many. a group of people
would get together, and they
would all sit in a circle. Her
mother would start laughing. No
jokes or funny stories. She'd just
start laughjng, and one by one
the others would get caught up
in it. and soon the whole circle
was laughing out of control -a
bright spot in a dismal time.
That was sort of the way It was
a1 Slapsie Maxie's. Katie would
laugh so hard that everyone
around us got hysterical, too. So
maybe TulJy Richards wasn't
really that funny. Maybe it was
just Katie and her infectious
laugh. I'll have to think about
that

residents who want to let their dog
swim at Bag Corona beach without
a leash ("Newport can tighten
leash," Sept. 5).
The problem is not with their
FJden retdeYer, which is evidently a
very nice and gies:rtle dog. The
probllm is jf ~u allow one dog
without a Jeuh. ~u have to allow all
dogs. Not all dogs are nice or gentle.
I penonally don't want to woay if
an unrestrained dog 1s a loving pet
or psychotic killer while I'm
swimming or walking on the beach.
And the famflles that crowd Big
Corona don't need the potential
threat of a dangerous dog attacking
children or even of an overly
friendly dog frightening a small
child by accident.
The dty has laws not to punish
responsible pet ownen, but to
protect the public from the dangers
caused by a minority of
inconsiderate, trresponsfble people.
I find it the height of a,rrogance
that these residents should
appuently feel the law should not
apply to them because they live
beside the public's beach.
And I wonder bcMr much tu
money was squandered by their lepl
appeals fordng the court to uphold
the public's right to not be molested
by unJeuhed dogs on the bead:i.
Maybe the city could designate a
location as a "dog beach," perhaps
in Crystal Cove, where there would
be minimal public effects. Big
