other Newport Beach trees while City

next battles.

A band of preservauon·minded
residents have joined hands with
Newport Beach to help restore a
heavily trafficked footbridge that has
enabled residents reach the beach for 74 years.
City officials have already begun the $40,000
project, which should be completed by the end
of October.
"It's just been a precious treasure in Corona
del Mar all these years,· Coundlrnan Dennis
O'Neil said about the bridge. ·people walk
across it, drive under it and unfortunately
we've taken it for granted.·
The 243·foot utilitarian·style bridge, which
connects two sections of Goldenrod Avenue
above Bayside Drive, was built in 1928. lt has
given residents living in the neighborhoods
above Ocean Avenue a direct route to Corona
del Mar State Beach.
A handful of residents who regularly use the
brldge. for an early morning walk or jog.
banded together about a year ago to help
restore it
For many years. lush geraniums grew out of
planters lining rails on both sides of the bridge;
their long. green tentacles reaching down the
outer side. They were visible to cars cruising
down Bayside on the road below. But the
plants, since a 1988 re-planting, have died olf
or shriveled into browning sterns.
Residents say they want the bridge to fit in
with the rest of Corona del Mar.
"It needs to be restored to show pride of
ownership,• said Uz Turelli, an eight-year
ttSident of the community. ·we need ow
bridge to reflect the quality of the community
around it•
Members of the Corona del Mar Residents
Assn. have raised about $1 ,600 in private
donations to help pay for the work. said 8.J.
Johnson. the group's president.
As part of the project, city workers will add
new planters, a new coat of paint. a new
ilrigation system, a new deck and new lighting
to Illuminate it at nlghL
The city has already added a ramp so the
bridge can be a~le to handicap members
of th~ con:ununity. Metal poles were also
removed from the middle of the bridge.

regime at Costa Mesa High School has
wasted no time this school year enforc ·
ing a series of rules that were previously
ignored and instituting new restrictions.

endy indude locking the student parking
lot gate in the morning and making lunch
passes contingent on good behavior and
academics, are mainly a result of con·
cems from teachers and other staff want·
ing to make the campus safer. said John
Garcia. the middle school's new principal.

performed In as the ill-fated Lucy. She did a
national tour with the show and cultivated a
nation of fans. She calls the experience one of

Schultz has always enjoyed tak-
ing his canoe out on the New-
port Shores Salt Marsh.. Floating
tennis balls or plastic bottles,
however, tend to spoil a day of
boad.ng fun fot him.
Tu help clean up the marsh,
Schultz and his wife, Mary, who
live in the Newport Shores hous-
ing community, volunteered to
organize a trash pickup as part of
'the California Coastal Oeanup
1>11 Saturday. -
"I've spen! a lot of my time in
nice, pristine places.• Schultz
said. "It just shows such a lack. of
respect (for the environment) to
have all t:bi.s junk [floating in the
marsh)."
The event Is an annual state-
wide beach cleanup at locations
from Eureka to the Mexican bor-
der. It ls organized by the Califor-
nia Coastal Conunission and. lo-
cally. by Orange County's Public
Facilities and Resources Depart-
ment.
Similar cleanup events are
scheduled for Saturday at Balboa
~ Newport piers, Corona del
Mar State Beach and the Upper
Newport Bay. A cleanup at Crystal
Cove State Beach was canceled,
due to a lack of interest. The
cleanups usually begin at about 9
a.m. and wrap up by noon.
Dozens of volunteers sweep-
ing the beaches for trash will col-
lect paper cups. plastic and any
other crash littering the beach.

who co-owns Me and My EV on
West Coast Highway, recently
opened her doors, offering tours
of Balboa Peninsula to tourists
with a fleet of 10 low-emissions
vehicles.
On Saturday, Harer said, she
will be offering volunteers free
rides down to the beach to help
in the cleanup, since parking is
usually a bear at the beach on
weekends.

tion to deal with tardy students.
Another CQntroYelsial policy is
the senior exit project. which is re-
quired for graduation for this
year's seniors. Although the school
board mandated the projects in
2000 and other schools bad al-
ready implemented them. some
Costa Mesa High School seniors
complained they were assigned
from out-of-the-blue this fall
ln adclition to a presentation at
the end of the year, the projects
require a 15-hour internship.
Some students say they don't have
time to complete a project with
myriad after-school activities and
question its value.
"They're just making it harder
to graduate,· said Corey Grosklos.

While the new principak have
heard their share of oomplaints,
there are some students who ad-
mire their tenacity to put some
teeth into the school's policies.
"I think people need to shut up
and obey the rules or get out."
said Ouisdan Miranda. 17. "[The
rules) will actually help us be-
cause we have to Uve by society's
rules. not our own free will."

to win when he
auctioned for a swim
to Alcatraz.

the fine line between excitement
and fear.
The Newport Bach resident
completed a grueling swim in
the chilly San Francisco Bay to
raise money for a camp for chil·
dren with cancer even though
he had never swum in the ocean
before.
The experience enabled him
to transcend his fear and do
something positive for children.
"I've taken the stand that chil·
dren all over the world should
be ta.ken care of," Afshar said.
"They are the most precious
commodity our society has."
The adventure started out in·
nocently enough.
At a silent auction last winter
for an Andersen Elementary
School fund-raiser -the school
A!shar's daughter attends -he
randomly algned up for the
Sharkfest Alcatraz race. not
really ..apecdng to get it. It
turned out he was the only one
on the sheet and would be
swimming with the sharks for a
mere $65.
He decided to turn the experi·
ence into a fund-raiser since he
had already committed to rais·
lng $20,000 for Camp Make-A·
Dream. a free camp in Montana
for children and young adults
with cancer. The fund-raising
commitment came from his job
as a c.onsultant for the collision
repair industry, which decided
to raise half a million dollars for
the camp.

Jewell. a kindergarten teacher at

Farzam Afshar did an Alcatraz swim in San Francisco Bay over the summer to raise money for
children with cancer.

had built up his stamina as a
runner who completed mara·
thons, he did not have a lot of
practice swimming.
"When we started, the most I
could do is one-and-a-half laps
in the pool.• Afshar said.
So the two started training in
March, swimming a couple of
days a week at the Newport Har·
bor High pool. Eventually, the
training progressed to pool
swim.ming six days a week and
ocean swimming three evenings
a week.
His first ocean swim was in·
til1Udating, Afshar recounted.
•·Everyone had a wetsuit on
except me and LJewellJ. "Afshar
said. • 1 was going on trust. I
jumped in the water and it was
cold ... All of a sudden. I'm too
far away (from the shore). hav-
ing an anxiety anaclc. I thought I
was going to die.•
But with Jewell's encourage-
ment, Afshar survived the initia-
tion and emerged from the
ocean with a strong sense of
pride.
·1 got back and felt ·waw. I
really accomplished some-
thing.'" Afshar said. "Like when
you do something you never
thought you could do. The Alea·
traz (swim) became more realis-
tic."
Throughout the training, Af.
shar was supported by friends
and family in his swimming and
fund-raising efforts. He said he
was moved by the community's
generosity, as when one family
who·was not very well sent him
a checlc for $30.
"We are so much like one an-
other,· Afshar said. "When it
comes down to things like this,
we still have the same agenda.·
When It was finally time for
the race in August. Afshar ar-
rived with an entourage. includ-
ing three brothers from the Bay
Area and another brother and
sister from Southern California.
During the 1.6-mile race, Afshar
suppressed his fear with per·
severance.
"As the fear came up. I kind of
thought about it and moved
on," he said. "I was in action
with my commitment."
It took him one hour and 20
minutes to complete the race
and he raised more than $I 0,000
in the process.
Since he 1s only halfway to his
funding commitment, Afshar
said he is still soliciting contri·
butions.
Jewell said she was impressed
by Afshar's resolve to accom·
plish his phy-;1cal and financial
goal.
"I tlunk that's so unique.·
Jewell said "What a wonderful
person he is.·
And it was such a positive
coaching experience that Jewell
said she will definitely put the
race package on the silent auc
tion again this year.
